🇺🇲🇺🇦 The Biden Administration has opted against sending ATACMS Missiles to Ukraine, despite the media fervour over the supposed approval for sending the longer-range Missiles.
ATACMS are a type of tactical ballistic missile typically fired from the M142 HIMARS GMLRS or from the M270 tracked MLRS system that has been sent to Ukraine in large numbers by the US since the start of the war, and have been heavily used by Ukraine to attack both Russian positions in the SMO zone as well as civilian targets in cities like Donetsk located in Russian-held territory.
The Biden Administration has been hesitant to send the ATACMS missiles to Ukrainian Forces because its maximum firing range of 300km (190mi) is about 6 times greater than standard HIMARS munitions, which typically have a range of 15-92km (9-57mi). This is worrying the Pentagon that Ukraine could use the ballistic missiles to strike deep into Russian territory, possibly escalating the war beyond Ukraine's borders.
US War planners at the Pentagon are also concerned with the historically low levels of American and European ammunition stockpiles that have been sucked dry by weapons transfers to Ukraine.
Even as the US increases the diplomatic pressure and sanctions against China with the hope of containing and damaging the Chinese economy and its ability to produce sophisticated weapons systems, the Pentagon is nevertheless preparing for a large-scale war with the PLA over Taiwan.
However, at the moment, US weapons shipments to Ukraine are slowing and minimizing the amount of ammunition and weapons systems being sent to Taiwan, with some weapons shipments having now been delayed for more than a year as the Russo-Ukrainian war raged on and the US faces systemic industrial base issues that have left a wide gap between Chinese and Russian military production on the one hand, and US and NATO military production on the other.
US military production has been slow to increase as American Defense Contractors like Boeing, Northrup Grumman and Raytheon have been hesitant to expand production facilities, concerned that the current production demand could be temporary, leaving Defense Contractors with large numbers of expanded, expensive to maintain manufacturing facilities that may be unnecessary in a few years, hurting these companies' profitability.
And this is one the most important facts about US Military production vs. Chinese and Russian military production.
While the Russian and Chinese Military Industrial Complex is purpose driven, focusing on the defense of their respective countries, the American Military Industrial Complex is profit driven and Privately owned, more concerned with its profits than the defense of their own country.
