Summary: Charles just transferred to St. Hilarion's and sees the most beautiful boy across the lawn. Edwin Payne is the prima ballerino of St. Hilarion's dance program and a well known ice queen. But, it's not like something like that could stop Charles Rowland.
AN: I wrote this for deadboyween's free day, but got kind of stuck halfway through. This really deserves to be a lot longer and slower, but I just wanted to hit the scenes I thought was fun. I hope you enjoy it!
The first time Charles Rowland saw Edwin Payne, he almost tripped and fell on his face.
Charles had been aware when he got the sports scholarship to St. Hilarion’s that what it was well known for was its dance program. That had smarted a little bit, because Charles knew that if his skin wasn’t so dark and the type of dance that he practiced was something classy like ballet, he could have gotten a scholarship for his dancing. Instead, he got a scholarship for cricket, which wasn’t that bad as Charles sincerely liked cricket. But, it wasn’t dancing.
What Charles hadn’t realized when he transferred to St. Hilarion’s was that a dance program would have boys as well as girls. And not just fit b-boys like the boys who had been in his crew with him. No, beautiful posh boys with legs for days and porcelain skin who moved like water when they walked across the quad.

So, everyone's seen the theory that the dolls in the Doll House are Edwin's old bodies, right? But if you want to break your heart a little more, take a look at the doll placement.
They line the corridors, but there are noticeably more of them in two particular spots.
First up: by the exit door.
This one makes a lot of sense. In disasters, people in a panic find it hard to get through doorways, especially inward-pulling doors, in a rush. It's a dangerous chokepoint for people who are panicking, which Edwin definitely would have been, being chased.
Add that to the fact that there isn't an actual door here. This is a hole in the wall; who's to say if it was even open when Edwin first found it? He might have had to break his way through, initially, which takes time, and time means getting caught.
But that leads us to the second spot, which isn't so obvious.
It's this spot by the window.
There's no cover here. There's nowhere to hide, to make it appealing for a boy seeking safety. There's no door or anything else to slow Edwin down. So why did he die here so often?
There's only one thing that makes this spot unique.
It has more light than anywhere else in the Doll House.
I propose that he died here, again and again, over seventy long years, doing exactly what he's doing when Charles finds him: seeking what comfort he can in whatever little light is available to him in the depths of hell.

“I just wanna talk,” Edwin calls out, raising his voice so Charles can hear. “Charles–” Edwin sidesteps a boy and tries to catch up with Charles. Someone jostles Edwin’s bag and he doesn’t stop to steady it. “Charles, seriously,” he says, reaching out and grabs Charles’ arm.
Charles stops dead in his tracks, face scrunching up in pain. Edwin freezes and drops. He had forgotten, he had forgotten, how could he have forgotten?
“I just wanna have lunch, yeah?” Charles says. He’s doing that thing with his eyebrows, when he is exasperated and annoyed and trying very hard to ignore something.
“No,” Edwin replies, “No, we didn’t talk yesterday, or the weeks before that, or before that– we never talk!” His voice is raising and people are beginning to stare and he cannot find it in himself to care.
Charles is looking around, though. He cares. He cares about everything.

But when they’re both temporarily restored to living bodies to aid in their search, being alive brings with it a host of new feelings, which neither of them know how to cope with, especially as their deadline looms closer and their quarry proves increasingly dangerous.
Summary: Edwin goes to meet the Cat King.
AN: We finally got to the Cat King! Huzzah! I think I gotta remove the pwp tag from this fic, because at this point three chapters of set up is probably too much plot to try and deny exists.
Edwin traveled back to Port Townsend the way someone else might rip a plaster off. He had dithered in front of the mirror in the office, trying to convince himself to swallow his fear and his pride and get it done. If he could just start moving, he knew his natural stubbornness would carry him the rest of the way there.
He spent entirely too long hesitating, but eventually he did manage to throw himself through the mirror and come out the other side in the public bathrooms near the docks. It was a short walk from there to the abandoned fish cannery where the Cat King resided.
“Well, well, well,” the Cat King had said with a smug smile as Edwin marched past yowling packs of cats to his throne. “Don’t you look spiffy.”
Summary: Edwin is alone and he's not doing very well.
AN: Somehow the setup has ballooned out to this chapter, as well. But, Cat King should show up next chapter!
For the first week, Edwin was too busy and too scared to feel lonely. He missed Charles and Crystal, but it was hard to linger on those thoughts when he had cases to work on top of research to do to help support Crystal and Charles while they searched for Niko.
Barely a day after Charles and Crystal had left, he received a package from them containing a chunky cellular telephone and a hastily jotted note on how to use it. It had taken him the better part of a day to get it set up and turned on. To say that Edwin struggled to use modern technology would be an understatement, but he was nothing if not determined. It was worth it to hear Crystal’s tinny voice in his ear.
After that, it was a constant back and forth of Crystal calling him with clues or bits of rumors for him to research or jot down in his notebook and him calling her back with suggestions or instructions. It was clunky, trying to participate in an investigation from afar. Doubly so because Charles refused to speak to him over the phone.

A pleased humming noise sounded from the Cat King’s throat.
“The ghost wants to feel like a real boy?” The words seemed mean, but they were spoken with kindness that bordered on affection.
“I want to feel something,” Edwin whispered, and it was one of the most honest things he’d said in weeks.

Or, Edwin may be in love with his best friend, but the Cat King can offer him so much more.
Summary: With Charles and Crystal crisscrossing the globe looking for Niko, Edwin is left behind to keep the agency running by himself. When the loneliness gets to be too much for him, Edwin turns to the Cat King for companionship and maybe a bit of an education too.
AN: Just full disclosure, this fic is going to be awful self-indulgent smut. I really like the idea of Edwin and Cat King together and I think they would fuck nasty, but I think they're terrible for each other romantically. So, this is my attempt to sort my horny thoughts into a narrative.
This first chapter is mostly just set up, so nothing especially spicy here. Catwin the main ship, but again not with a romantic happy ending in mind. Otherwise, I haven't decided how this fic will go.

Port Townsend was a turning point for the Dead Boy Detectives.
For the agency, they were given greater legitimacy through the endorsement of the Lost & Found department. Not to mention a much higher number of cases being funneled to them directly from the afterlife itself. They even earned a regular paycheck from the Night Nurse herself after they had proven themselves an effective team.
For Charles, he seemed to gain greater peace of mind. Sharing his traumatic past had been healing, lifting a weight off his shoulders that he had been carrying all through his life and his death. He also had his relationship with Crystal to buoy his mood even higher. They had a rough start right after Port Townsend, but Charles stuck by her through all the ups and downs of trying to reconnect with her parents and make reparations to the people she had hurt. They had come through it stronger and happier than ever.
For Edwin, he had shed many of his own worries. He could now be fairly confident that he wouldn’t be sent to hell, so long as he continued to solve mysteries for the Lost & Found department (which he was happy to continue doing). He also had been able to make peace with part of himself that had haunted him through his own life and death; his sexuality. He was able to admit to himself that he was attracted to men and even confess his feelings to his best friend and nothing terrible had happened. Well, he had been captured and tortured directly afterward, but he was fairly confident that was a coincidence and not some cosmic retribution for giving into his own sinful thoughts.
