Okay so I've been informed that this is super cool and should be shared so please behold my Great Grandfather's helmet from WWI (my OTHER great grandfather, not the one who was mustard gassed and had perminant laryngitis as a result)

This helmet was painted in 1918 by a French woman for my Great Grandad before he went into the trenches. It's an oil painting, and the woman who did it probably only charged about 50¢-$1, just as a way to make some money and as a way to send the men into battle with something beautiful and unique. The kicker is, my great Gramps caught Spanish Flu before he could actually see any action, and was sent home to either recover or die. He survived, but because of his short deployment the helmet and the painting done to it survived in near perfect condition too.

Whoever the woman was who painted the helmet was a master at her art, and not only is it incredibly detailed but she used the three dimensional surface to full effect, taking the brim of the helmet to make a horizon line for the sunset over the water. And she gave it texture and details that would make Bob Ross proud.

It's 103 years old this year :)

(and yes, the impasto (texture) of the painting feels EXACTLY like how you think it does lol)

Bronze Age 'power helmets' unearthed from Danish bog

In 1942, a peat cutter digging in a Danish bog crunched his shovel into a horned bronze helmet. Long, curving bull’s horns topped a round cap adorned with the beak and large eyes of a bird of prey. Fittings on the headgear may have made it possible to attach feathers and perhaps even a mane of horse hair.

Subsequent excavations revealed the remarkable adornment had a nearly identical twin—one that was deliberately placed in the bog on a wooden platter. But the horned pair isn’t evidence that the Vikings who once lived in the area wore helmets, a modern myth; instead, they are far older, a study now reveals.

Researchers show the helmets were deposited almost 3000 years ago—about 900 B.C.E., more than 1500 years before the first Vikings arose in the area. The team also argues that the décor of the headpieces may have been inspired by similar symbolism in far-off Sardinia.

I love that Odin's helmet (wings and horns) looks like helmets of Thor and Loki. Like: he has symbols of both his sons in one. Or rather: each son wears a part of daddy's symbols.

What else do I like: that Odin shares gold on his armour with Loki and red on his cape with Thor. And those circles on armour with both of them:

Just daddy's boys.

I expect Thor, as the elder, got to pick the design of his helm first, and went with the feathers, and Loki got the horns. But Odin's helm really is extra, isn't it?

Asgardian royalty and their helmets

Bor, Thor’s grandfather. His helmet looks like a ram’s horn because he’s probably as stubborn.

Odin, Thor’s father. His helmet is a combination of both Thor’s and Loki’s helmets. And it brings the next topic:

Loki, Thor’s brother. His horns keep on getting bigger every new movie, someone save his neck. Ooops

Hela, Thor’s sister. Whatever that is, it’s very dramatic. Of course, to be asgardian you’re required to be dramatic.

Thor, the only person in the entire family who has wings instead of horns, must be because he can actually fly.

Since Odin's helmet has wings and horns, Thor and Loki agreed that they would each copy one feature, and Thor chose the wings and Loki got the horns. Hela's headgear looks just as much like a coatrack as it does antlers, tbh.

Soo… @portraitoftheoddity mentioned something about Loki having deer antlers instead of his usual horns… and my hand kinda sliped…

Enjoy Loki now in Deer, Ram, Ox Antilope, Moose, Narwhal (or Unicorn, whichever you prefer) and of course, OG flavor!

I like the deer antlers best, as they look more balanced, but I also have to give my approval to the unicorn horn! (Bonus: being able to stab people with your head.)
