The series hasn't gotten into Lestat's mother yet, but if they keep it close to canon, a big reason why Lestat resents Louis reading so much is because that's what Gabrielle did too. She tended to isolate and basically deny him affection as her child in order to keep her own distractions / sanity - he never even learned how to read, she never taught him. That whole family is just trauma upon trauma and then this is what he repeats with Claudia (and Louis) too, bc this man has never reflected on a single thing in his life, probably.

When Claudia comes back, he's ready to be a bitch to her (bc I think he really figured she's not returning for good) but he didn't see the inclusion of Louis coming. This probably wasn't going to be a long lasting bitchy-ness, either, it's just his first defense to feeling rejected. Get the fuck out of here, we don't need you! She left and she also left to learn - but he won't tell them anything, so wtf?! What else IS she supposed to do? If he were less in Cunt Mode, he could have easily avoided this whole thing, but alas.

When she brings up that she came back for Louis though - holy shit. So first we have Lestat feeling rejected, as a mentor / father / uncle / whatever, THEN she's coming back and saying, 'I came back to get HIM too' - the other person Lestat feels intellectually inferior to and who he's felt has ALSO rejected him for years now. So she can fix everything that he can't. So she came back for Louis when nobody came back for Lestat (in his childhood - not even God).

LESTAT'S FUCKING STUPID PRIDE, MY GOD. In this scene, Claudia is literally BEGGING him to tell her what's out there, please bond with me, please guide me, and he just is too triggered by it all to give a single shit, so then he literally just attacks everyone and makes it worse.

It kills me how much they're all in so much pain and just want to be understood and have a family, but nobody can just SAY THIS out loud, so this cycle of bullshit just routinely destroys them.

Marius’ preventing Lestat from talking about those who must be kept and the vampire lineage is…a complication. Eventually Lestat says, “fuck you” to all of that, but not in time to save Claudia.

So heartache from mother and maker (through vampire lineage).

This reminded me that an early film script had Lestat being a whole lot more open in a...kind of nicer way, I guess?:
