I don't think the writers are trying to "ruin" the relationship between Caryl permanently. But for now, yes. I think they did this because they want the will-they-won't-they to happen in the Caryl spinoff show. Which means they had to break it enough that they only build back their close friendship just in time for the spinoff. I think how they're doing this could hurt the relationship (in eyes of viewers) overall... but they're willing to take that gamble to delay will-they-won't-they further
I agree that the writers are intentionally trying to make it seem like there’s no hope for them (lol), but in my opinion, the question of will they or won’t they has to be answered in the last season of the main show to give us some sense of closure for their decade-long journey.
Realizing their feelings for each other after they choose to run away together just isn’t believable. Yes, they talk about leaving while they’re still in the “friends only” stage, but in order to go through with it, they have to experience a big emotional change where they fully comprehend what they want and what they mean to each other.

I think my thoughts are a bit unpopular or mixed.. Idk. I’m overthinking. I’m really am. LOL It’s a long ranty post and with some spoilers and speculations! (I’m kinda a hate-watcher but I want or keep hoping for good writing. Oh I’m also more of an ensemble-show/TF fan too. So I'm like yeah u know twd/cheesey-ok-writing but I'm also taking it serious. I want good story telling/writing. Sigh, anyway.)

It’s be interesting in the Caryl spinoff to see Daryl and Carol encountering other communities and seeing how they live. Or finding an area of the country that is literally untouched by the dead. Maybe like the wilderness of Montana. TWD has been so isolated in one spot all these years. I just really want to see Caryl travel around and experience new places. Find a waterfall and go swimming. Live in a mansion for a couple weeks. Stop by a post-apocalyptic Disney World (lol I know that’s a stretch!). Soulmate best friends-turned-lovers road tripping together and cuddling at every stop XD
Norman saying the Caryl spin-off show will have a different tone. It makes me think it’s leaning again toward a romantic-Caryl ...traveling. 🥰
