Teas for Witches: the Basics

I can talk about tea literally all day (and I have because I’ve worked in a spice and tea shop for years), and there is SO much to talk about with both health and magical benefits. Teas are made from tea leaves called camellia sinensis, with the exception of herbal teas/infusions. For this, I’m going to list magical and health benefits by type of tea.

Black Tea

Feminine * Earth * Winter * Strength * Stability * Death * Expelling Negativity * Alertness * Energy

Black tea is the most fermented and oxidized of all teas. Its tea leaves look shriveled and black. It combats heart ailments, digestive problems, high cholesterol, asthma, and breast/menstrual problems. Black tea also has a lot of caffeine (47 mg, still less than coffee) and too much of it can cause acidity issues in the stomach.

Examples: English/Irish Breakfast Tea, Assam, Darjeeling, Lapsung Souchang, Ceylon, Earl Grey

**There is a subset of black tea called Pu-erh, a post-fermented black tea. Some consider this to be the “purest” of all teas and connect it to the aether, as it is rare and valuable.

Green Tea

Masculine * Fire * Summer * Passion * Healing * Conscious Mind * Sexual Health * Love * Energy * Progress * Magic

Green tea is slightly steamed but not fermented, which maintains its green color. It has many health benefits, such as detoxifying, reducing cholesterol and weight, boosting immunity and stamina, and reducing blood glucose. It has less caffeine than black, but still some.

Examples: Jasmine, Sencha, Matcha, Gyokurocha, Genmaicha, Hojicha, Gunpowder, Dragonwell

Oolong Tea

Feminine * Water * Autumn * Reflection * Meditation * Wisdom * Serenity * Concentration * Romance * Friendship

I always describe Oolong as being between Green and Blacks, since it is half fermented. It can help manage weight and stress, balance blog sugar levels, remove free radicals, and promote healthy skin and bones. HOWEVER, too much can actually speed up bone degradation because it sweeps away excess calcium. And beware of its high caffeine content (I used to drink Raspberry Wulong to pull all-nighters).

Examples: Milk Oolong, Formosa, Wulongs

White Tea

Masculine * Air * Spring * Happiness * Wisdom * Moon * Purification * Protection * Clarity * Cleansing * Beginnings

White tea is a little harder to find. Either the tea leaves are plucked as immature leaves and steamed, or the leaves have not been processed (there seems to be little consensus across cultures). Some have a small amount of caffeine. It’s a great antibacterial and antioxidant, and it improves the heart, oral health, and skin. Drinking a couple cups works better than one, and you can reuse the tea leaves, granted that the second cup will brew longer.

Examples: White teas come in many flavors and are usually labeled as white tea. You may need to seek out a tea shop to find some.

Herbal Tea

Magical properties depend on which herbs are used

This tea seems to be the most popular for witches on tumblr, because it is composed of dry, unprocessed herbs, seeds, fruits, or roots, and has no caffeine (as long as the herb doesn’t!). There are many recipes online as herbals are easy to make. In general, herbal tea promotes calm, reduces cholesterol and risk of heart conditions, cancers, and diabetes. Due to its lack of actual tea leaves it has less antioxidants than other teas. Some don’t even call it a tea, but dub it Herbal Infusion.

Examples: Rooibos, most Chais, Ginseng, Chamomile, Peppermint, Spearmint, Hibiscus

**Yerba Mate is an herbal tea that is notorious for its high caffeine levels (you’ve probably seen the energy drink). It also zaps one’s appetite and can become addictive, so be careful around this tea!

As always, feel free to add/message me of any corrections, and I hope you find your cup of tea!

Anger dispersion magick tea

This can be used on you, or another person, but please make sure to ask said person before casting it towards them.

Supplies:

chamomile,

lavender,

honey or sugar,

amethyst, (optional)

agate, (optional)

and, if you want it to work quickly or if its an emergency, add ginger.

Directions:

if your supplies are limited, use a coffee filter as a tea bag. Put all your herbs into the bag, tie it off with a string or sew a thread to seal it. Boil water, pour water into cup, place bag into hot water and stir in sugar or honey.

All of this done with the intent to calm the anger of the one who drinks this tea.

Stir clockwise for good results and luck.

If you are using the stones, drop them into the tea, and stir with sugar or honey. (clean your crystals first) Strain stones and drink.

(edit: The intention you should infuse this with is lessening bouts of anger, and making it a lot more difficult to experience anger.)

Tea Spells

Blend the teas for a recipe in a plastic baggy or a glass jar, then measure out one tablespoon per cup of tea.

A small two cup teapot will take two tablespoons of tea.

If you are like me, however, two cups of tea equates to three because I prefer my tea with lots of milk, because the tea base is black tea leaves, the addition of milk and a sweetener makes for a very flavorful beverage.

Unless you are making tea for a crowd, you really do need more than one or two tablespoons of tea at any one time.

Store in a closed jar in a cabinet away from light.

TEA FOR DIVINATION: 1 tablespoon China black, English breakfast, or Irish breakfast tea 2 teaspoons lemon balm 1 teaspoon eyebright 1 tablespoon mugwort 1 tablespoon rose hips

TEA FOR PSYCHIC HEALING: 1 tablespoon China black tea 1 teaspoon elder flower 1 teaspoon nettle 2 teaspoon burdock root 2 teaspoon mullein 2 teaspoon rose hip

TEA FOR LOVE (SPELL): 1 tablespoon China black tea 1 teaspoon damiana 1 teaspoon raspberry leaves 2 teaspoon chamomile 2 teaspoon mullein 2 teaspoon rose hips

TEA FOR MEDITATION: 1 tablespoon China black or English breakfast tea 2 teaspoon chamomile 1 teaspoon rose hips 2 teaspoon elder flower

TEA FOR PURIFICATION: 1 tablespoon China black tea 2 teaspoon fennel 1 teaspoon valerian 1 teaspoon chamomile 2 teaspoon hyssop

TEA FOR RELAXATION: 1 tablespoon English breakfast tea 1 teaspoon elder flower 2 teaspoon rose hips 1 teaspoon chamomile 2 teaspoon hops 1 teaspoon valerian

TEA FOR HEALTH (SPELLS): 1 tablespoon China black tea 2 teaspoon fennel 1 teaspoon mint 2 teaspoon rose hips 1 teaspoon elder flower 2 teaspoon hops 1 teaspoon mullein 1 teaspoon white oak

TEA FOR PROTECTION: 1 tablespoon Irish or English breakfast tea 2 teaspoon elder flower 1 teaspoon linden flower 1 teaspoon valerian 2 teaspoon burdock root 1 teaspoon comfrey 1 teaspoon hyssop 2 teaspoon rose hips

Besides magical teas, there are combinations that are simply a pleasant way to reconnect with the earth devas, the Goddess and the God. For this type of quiet closeness to nature, you might want to try these taste combinations of herbal teas:

  • English breakfast, rose hips, and hyssop
  • Linden flower and chamomile
  • China black, chamomile, and rose hips
  • English breakfast, dandelion root, rose hips, and chamomile
  • English breakfast, elder flower, hops, and rose hips

Things have been crazy lately so I just wanted to take a moment and remind you to love yourself because you are important!  No matter who you are or where you come from! Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise!

I decided to make a step by step “How-to Jenny’s Witchy Brew” for Self Love ~ Rose Soy Milk Tea <3

Things you will need: -Rose Tea: I get mine at 99 Ranch Market but it’s essentially just dried rose hips so if you have rose hips that you can dry out, that will work too! You will want to use 6-8 rose buds, the more you add the stronger the flavor!

-Organic Soy Milk: This can be regular milk or almond milk, I prefer unsweetened organic soy milk. If you decide to use soy make sure it’s organic! Brands such as ‘Silk’ isn’t good, even if they claim it’s organic, for some reason it burns and wont cook right. It’s gotta be the real deal! For this recipe you only need 1 cup. -Honey: Any kind of organic honey will do, if you have herbal honey that’s even better for adding more florals to your tea! I usually add about 2-3 teaspoons, but feel free to add to taste! -Cinnamon & Nutmeg: This is optional! I like to add just a pinch of both spices to add a little kick to my tea. If you don’t care for spice try ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract instead!

-Sugar: This is also optional, I like my tea to be a little on the sweet side & since we are using organic unsweetened soy milk it helps to really sweeten it up! I only use barely a ½ teaspoon,  but just add to taste!

-Small Pot

-Mesh Strainer: For removing the flowers once it’s cooked.

-Your Favorite Mug! Mine is a black mug with my astrological sign gold leafed into it!

Before starting, take a moment to close your eyes, clear your mind, breathe deeply through your nose and slowly release through your mouth (do this a few times). Visualize letting go of any negativity or weight you may be carrying on your shoulders…now…

<3 LET’S GET BREWING! <3

1- Pour soy milk into pot, turn heat on low

2- Add rose tea, gently crumble a couple of the buds

3- Add cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar

4- Add desired amount of honey; while you slowly drizzle it in feel free to draw symbols with it such as hearts or infinity symbols- whatever you feel is right for helping to instill your manifestations of self love into your tea!

5- Stir your brew clockwise! While slowly stirring visualize the self love that this tea will bring you & say some positive affirmations about yourself such as:

“I love the person I am, I am strong & caring, I am creative, I am beautiful inside and out…” say whatever best suits your needs for self love and take a moment to appreciate the wonderful person you are! <3

6- Let your tea brew for approximately 10 minutes on low stirring occasionally to prevent scorching. DON’T LET IT BOIL! You want to create an infusion of the flowers which means a longer slower heating process. Boiling will mean scorching the flowers and milk!

7- You’ll notice the rose buds will begin to loose their color, remove your brew from the heat to let it cool and allow the tea to steep for about 3 minutes.

8- Remove roses with mesh strainer and compost.

Enjoy! As you drink, visualize your tea as a pink white healing light of love and remember your affirmations taking deep breaths in-between each sip! <3

I hope you all enjoyed this & that your tea was delicious & full of positive energy! Feel free to try making this with other flowers which have different properties such as: lavender & chamomile for happiness and relaxation! Much Love <3

~ Teas to Drink Before Doing Divination ~

Hey guys! :D

So I am a lover of tea and divination. and sugar.

As a person with these likes, I have learned to mesh the two together! :D Here is a list of teas you can drink before doing divination :)

I only really put down teas I find to taste good, since drinking bitter/gross tea puts me in a bad mood xD Anyways, here’s the short little list I came up with! :)

Teas:

  • Jasmine Tea ~ is said to induce prophetic dreams, and is a good for divination involving major events, in my experience. Also very cheap. I got some for $2.00  at the grocery store, and it’s lasted me a good while! :)
  • Chamomile Tea ~ Calms the nervous system, gets rid of anxiety, and soothes the mind. I like to drink chamomile to help wind myself down before a reading.
  • Rose Hip/Petal Tea ~ Roses are wonderful, accessible, and taste amazing in teas! Did I mention that they work great for divination? :)
  • Mint Tea ~ Mint clears the mind, cleanses you of negative energies/entities, and is good for hose days when you feel foggy.

Additions to Your Tea:

  • Moon Water ~ Boil some moon water to make your tea with to harness the intuitive energies of the moon! :D It also cleanses, so double win :)
  • Gem Elixir ~ Pick a non-toxic, water-safe stone or two with divination-enhancing properties,  and make some gem elixir! Add this to your boiling water/use it as your water, and you’ve got some awesome tea! :D

Other Notes:

  • Stir clockwise and say a quick chant over your cup to draw in more energy and strength. Use something short, sweet, and to the point :)
  • Choose a tea-cup/mug/etc in a color that corresponds with divination/psychic abilities! :D
  • Charge your tea bags/boxes of loose tea in the moonlight for a boost!
  • Get creative!

**Some herbs/teas are not safe for people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medications, have certain illnesses, or are otherwise at risk. Please check a credible website such as WebMD.com for the side effects, as well as advice/info on the suggested herbs. Stay safe!**

For Restful Sleep

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about how to ward off insomnia or induce sleep. Hopefully these can help. :)

Sleep Oil

  • ½ ounce carrier oil (sweet almond oil, apricot kernel, or olive work well)
  • 3 drops lavender
  • 12 drops bergamot
  • 3 drops cypress

To increase the benefits of your sleep, apply a few drops behind your ears, spreading the excess out over your jawline (you don’t need much, just a little dab will work). Do this immediately before bed. Please do a spot test on the back of your hand to make sure you’re not allergic.

Pouch For A Restful Night

Add these items to a pouch:

  • Dried hibiscus
  • Valerian
  • Chamomile flower
  • lavender
  • one small amethyst

Mix all of the above together in a small pouch and charge the pouch. Feel free to add a couple of drops of oil such as lavender, rose geranium, lemon balm or any other oil pertaining to sleep.

Sleep Jar

  • Blue or brown glass jar
  • 1/8 cup dried lavender
  • 1 tablespoon dried rosemary
  • ½-¾ tablespoon ground orris root

After everything is well covered by the orris root, store with a tight fitting lid and keep it near your bedside. When you are having trouble sleeping, take out the jar, uncap it and inhale deeply its sweet aroma. Then set it aside, leaving it open on your bedside table, turn off the lights and sleep.

You can add a piece of moonstone, amethyst, blue lace agate, or blue tourmaline to the mix to make it more effective.

More Things You Can Do:

  • Drink Chamomile Tea before bed.
  • Can drink Valerian root tea or chew on a Valerian root
  • Try to stay on a regular sleep schedule
  • Try stress relieving activities such as meditation before bed and during free time

A Spell to Cool Anger

Supplies:

  • a few spoonfuls of mint leaves
  • your desired amount of honey/sweetener
  • water and a teacup

Heat the water to just boiling, and pour over the mint leaves. Take a few deep breathes and inhale the aroma of the mint as it steeps. Let your anger evaporate along with the steam. Strain out the leaves and add honey to the tea.

Let it cool a bit, and drink. As you enjoy your tea, repeat the following a few times:

Cool my mind, leaves of mint Honey, sweeten my intent My attitude has to change Anger must go out of range

This should help you cool off, and see the situation in a better perspective. Sit quietly until the entire cup of tea is finished.
