Do you have any of those cards that when they turn up they make you really uncomfortable and you never feel like you can properly describe their meaning to someone you’re reading for? I know I do – The Lovers, The Queen of Wands, and The Emperor have haunted me since I started reading. Cards that are difficult to read can teach us a lot about ourselves and can help guide our shadow work.
I’ve been toying with this spread a little and I wanted to put it out there for others to try out. The idea is that you let the deck speak to what’s blocking your understanding of a given card – which if you’re interested in shadow work, often highlights areas of ourselves that need to be given attention.
The spread is laid out as follows.
Method
Shuffle the deck and find your chosen card. Place it in the first position. Take the cards immediately following it or proceeding it depending on which will have enough cards to fill every position in the spread. An alternative is to draw the card, put it in first position, shuffle how you choose, and draw the top cards to fill the remaining spots.
Positions
The first card is pretty straight forward. Choose a card that’s giving you trouble, that makes you uncomfortable every time it comes up. I think people tend to pick major arcana cards here but don’t be afraid to pick a minor card. All blocks have something to teach us
The second card is how your past influences how you read this card. It could be an event, a belief, an unresolved fear – anything really. Our past often dictates our expectations of the future. So when a card is difficult to read it often points to an expectation we’ve picked up from our past and it either challenges that expectation or confirms something uncomfortable.
The third card is how your perception of yourself is influencing how you read the first card. Similar to the second card, when a card is difficult to read it often challenges our image of ourselves. It may make us feel like bad people when we think highly of ourselves or vice versa, highlight an area we’ve struggled with, or make us question the narrative we tell ourselves.
The fourth card is how others in your life inform your reading of the first card. Often we see other people in the cards, ones we like and ones we don’t. Our feelings for or about that person will often undermine how we read this card in relation to ourselves and to other people.
The fifth, sixth, and seventh card are all what those influences can teach us about ourselves. The lessons they highlight can also offer clues as how to unblock your reading of the main card.
Conclusion
I hope folks find this spread helpful. I’m still tweaking it and toying with it. If you use it to create something new or come up with a different way to do a similar task, please reblog and/or let me know! I’d love to boost more materials on this.
As always, take the best and leave the rest and if you have any questions let me know!

I started a new job this month, and naturally, I was anxious to see what was in store! I created this spread to hopefully find some answers, and I think it was pretty spot on so far!
I know you think you don’t need these three cards. But trust me, you need these three cards. They orient the whole spread to make sure you’re on the same page as to what’s really gone up in flames in your life.
What’s the reality? What’s the lesson here? All the time, “bad” things happen (or spontaneously combust) and it’s actually for our own good. Here’s a peek at your silver-lining, though you may not be ready to embrace it yet. Also, if you’re making a mountain out of a molehill - this is where you’ll get a reality check.
Maybe it was you? Maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was someone else, or a life circumstance, or a particular desire. Find out.
Piled up garbage is one thing. A burning pile of garbage is another. Garbage can be salvaged. It’s best to let flaming garbage burn itself out. So who/what decided that there was nothing redeemable here? What circumstances looked at this pile of garbage and gave a resounding: “Fuck it!”
You can also frame this card as: How can I move on? Whether you set the blaze yourself, or it was someone else, or a circumstance or life event that did it for you, forgiveness will give you the strength to leave the ashes where they lie.
Note: Look, if you try this spread thinking that nothing is really that messed up in your life (like I just did), you’re going to probably get called out on something. Take it with a grain of salt. The severity of a garbage fire is truly relative to how you feel about it.
And, above all, remember that you can’t get a phoenix unless you start with a pile of ashes.
I think everyone has something that they positively want to change about themselves; but as we all know, this isn’t always the easiest thing to do… I made this spread to understand and conquer any negative behaviors, thinking patterns, and tendencies. I had really wonderful results!
1. Past 2. Present 3. Future 4. Self 5. Hidden Information 6. Challenge 7. Outcome

I am currently dealing with some pretty heavy traumas and issues in my life right now, some of which include being in a negative head space concerning my mental wellness. I wanted to create an interactive spread to help me feel better while allowing me to be proactive in my healing and coping process without overwhelming myself. This is how The Get Well Journey Tarot Spread came to be.
Items Needed: Something to write with. A deck of your choosing Paper, Notebook, Your divination journal, etc.
Step One: Go through your Tarot or Oracle deck and pick out three cards that make you happy or provide you with a positive feeling of hope, joy, or wellness.
Step Two: Place the cards you have chosen face down and shuffle them. Once you have shuffled them, put the small stack of three cards to the side.
Step Three: Take your deck with the remaining cards and shuffle it. What I like to do during this step is speak aloud that I want this deck to give me the steps needed to help me through this trying time in my life. Stop shuffling when it feels right to stop for you.
Step Four: Take the original stack of three cards and lay each card one by one in a straight line.
Step Five: Flip the first card over. This is your first area of focus within your wellness journey. Jot down the card in your journal or paper and write down what this card means to you. Flip the second card and jot it down. This is your second area of focus on your wellness journey. Flip the last card and jot it down. This is your third area of focus in your wellness journey.
Step Six: After you have jotted down all three areas of focus to your wellness journey, now is the time to take the other deck you shuffled with the remaining cards and pull one card for each area of focus. These cards will symbolize the first proactive steps to take for each focus area of your wellness journey. Write out your interpretations for each step in your journal.
Step Seven: Once you have all six cards laid out, you can summarize the reading as a whole. I like to sit with these cards for a few days to allow for any additional insights and wisdom to spark before proceeding on implementing the steps in my wellness journey.
