Method For Protection From Undesired Spirits Or People
I have been working on my own way of bodily and territorial protection combining a few methods I’ve picked up over the years. Since the veil is thinner at Samhain, it’ll be easier to remove negative entities and invite positive energy to your home.
There will be some prep work first. The method is going to be useful in protecting your home from unwanted spirits and energies as well as protecting yourself from unwanted living people having too much access.
The items you’ll need for the overall method are:
Eggshells
Black salt
Life water
2 jars
1 smaller jar
First you need to make the black salt. You can buy it out there already made (remember we’re not talking about edible black salt sold for Indian food) but I’m a big proponent of witches doing for themselves. If you need something in your craft, you can find a way to harvest it naturally or make it.
There are a couple of ways you can do it.
Do you have an old black pot or cooking pan? Fantastic. You can do it the traditional way. Get sea salt or the purest form of salt you can find. Scrape the old black pot into it. Mix in the metal scrapings with your salt (obviously you should be okay with scraping up an old pot). Remember black salt doesn’t necessarily have to be totally black - it’s just the name for it. A lot of black salt can rage from amber to brown to full-on black.
If you don’t have an old black pot, fear not. Since I’m a devotee of the goddess Brigid, fire and hearth magick are very important to me. I’m comfortable working with fire. My preferred method is to mix the ashes from wood fires, charcoal, or protective herbs in with my sea salt. Don’t just use any herb ashes if you go the ashy herbal route. They need to have protective properties.
Store black salt in a glass jar if you can. I prefer glass for all of my storage. Dark things go in dark jars (this is one of my quirks - you can do your own thing if you don’t like dark glass jars) and I also let my black salt cure in a dark cabinet when I’m not using it.
For this protection ritual, take some of the black salt and mix it with crushed eggshells in a separate container. Crushed eggshells are traditionally used for protection as well.
I don’t really know if this is an existing thing. I was taught to make this for cleansing purposes when I was rather young, so it just might be within my family tradition. If other people use it, that’s fantastic.
It’s easy. Mix three parts water to one part salt. I’m talking about natural salt, not black salt. With the Life Water, you’re symbolically recreating the basic building blocks of the human body - of the life force. That’s why we’re keeping this separate from the black salt because you don’t find black salt in the living. Purified water is best. I use moon water (water charged under a full moon).
Store your Life Water in a clear glass jar. Darkness isn’t necessary.
- Begin by your usual practices. It should be noted that if you cast circles, your circle this time needs to cover the whole of your property.
- Take your black salt and crushed eggshell mixture and sprinkle lines on your window sills and doorway thresholds leading outside. As you progress, say aloud, “I banish all darkness and those with harmful intent. None may come to me without consent. Never again will malice cross this line. This border, I do define.”
- Repeat at every outside facing window and doorway.
- Move through your home in a clockwise pattern while sprinkling a little bit of Life Water in each room and each closet. As you progress, say out loud something to the effect of, “My home is sacred. Malicious energy is not invited. This body is mine. With light and joy, I do align.”
- Repeat in every living space.
- Repeat in a clockwise pattern around the border of your property.
- Get your black salt and crushed eggshell mixture again. Stand in the open doorway of your home. Throw a pinch of the mixture out of the doorway while saying aloud, “By the power of my magick and my potion, I throw out lingering harmful entities. If harm returns, I’ll not hesitate protect my body and home from enemies.”
- Repeat at all outside facing doorways.
- Finally, sprinkle the black salt and crushed eggshells around the edges of your property. Repeat the earlier intention as you go: “I banish all darkness and those with harmful intent. None may come to me without consent. Never again will malice cross this line. This border, I do define.”
- Conclude ritual in your usual manner.
If you have a specific person encroaching on your space too much, or someone who means harm, you can protect yourself. Take your black salt and crushed eggshell mixture and sprinkle a circle around the person. Make sure nobody sees you do it though, especially the person in question. Focus in your mind on saying, “I banish you from my space. May you never again recognize my face.” The process will need to be repeated over time.
Obviously you shouldn’t try to banish people from your life for minor issues. I only recommend using black salt for removal in serious situations. Use your best discretion.
