A guide on protecting yourself and your home.

Note: this is a long post!

Personal Protection

  • Wear an amulet on your person - can be made from man-made or natural materials so long as its intent is to protect
  • Keep a protective crystal in your pocket
  • Craft a small protective spell jar and keep on your person
  • Anoint yourself with a protective oil
  • Place an energetic shield around yourself
  • Place a glamour on yourself to go unnoticed in the presence of harmful or negative energies
  • Carry a piece of iron on your person
  • Bathe with a wash made from protective herbs
  • Sleep with a sachet of herbs under your pillow or hanging above your bed to prevent nightmares

  • Hang a protective amulet from the rearview mirror in your vehicle for safe travels

Home & Hearth Protection

  • Hang rose stems with thorns intact above the entrance of your home
  • Hang an upside down horseshoe above the entrance of your home (some lore states you should hang the horseshoe right-side-up)
  • Hang wind chimes or bells outside of your home
  • Create a “Witch Bottle” and bury in your front yard, or in a potted plant on your porch
  • Create a “Witch’s Ladder” or “Witch Ball” and hang it either inside or outside of your home
  • Hang imagery of protective symbols outside or around your home
  • Burn protective incense in your home
  • Create a room spray made from protective oils and spray around your home
  • Create a protective wash and use it to clean your windows, door frames, and tile/wooden floors
  • Use the wash mentioned above to “paint” symbols of protection on the outside of your front door, on your porch, etc.
  • Place a protective crystal at each corner inside your home
  • Place a small glass of salt at each corner inside your home
  • Hammer 3 iron nails into your front door
  • Create a protective powder and sprinkle around the perimeter of your home - alternately, sprinkle outside of your front and back door
  • Create a sachet filled with protective herbs and crystals - keep inside or outside of your home, in your vehicle, etc.
  • Hang mirrors inside of your home

Rick’s Handmade Butter

“Is this really OK? Thank you. Your milk is very good. In return, I’ll teach you how to make special butter. Once you’ve tasted it, you’ll go nuts over it.” - Rick, Harvest Moon 64

Homemade butter is actually quite easy to make, and tastes much better than anything store bought. Plus, you can add any herbs or spices that you’d like. I made a simple salted butter and an Italian herb butter. Cinnamon and a bit of sugar would also be a good butter for spreading on toast or pancakes.

Difficulty: Easy

Time: Less than 30 minutes

Two cups of cream will make about 1 cup of butter.

First, start with some cream. Heavy whipping cream will work, but I bought cream from a store that sold dairy from a local farm.

If you have a food processor, pour two cups (or if yours is smaller, fill it just over the blade until it’s half full) of cream into it. If you don’t have a food processor, skip to the end to learn how to make it without one. Since I’m making salted butter, I also pulled out some coarse kosher salt. Regular table salt will work as well, though you might need to adjust measurements to taste. Unsalted butter is fine, too.

Turn the processor on low and let it go for about seven minutes. It will start to clump up and turn yellow when it’s done. The liquid leftover is buttermilk, and can be saved for other recipes.

I poured the buttermilk off to make bread later.

After pouring off the buttermilk, rinse the butter several times with ice cold water. I took the workbowl off the processor and swirled the water around and poured it out into the sink. Rinse and pour out until it becomes clear.

Once the butter is thoroughly rinsed, add salt or other preferred ingredients and pulse in the food processor a few times to get everything stirred up. I used a quarter teaspoon of kosher salt. Then place the butter into a cheesecloth or other kitchen towel and squeeze it to get the extra liquid out.

Place the butter on parchment paper or wax paper and roll it out, or you can simply keep the butter in a ball and wrap in cling wrap or place into an air tight container.

I rolled mine into a little log. Twist the ends of the parchment or wax paper to keep air out and place it in the fridge. It will keep in the fridge for about a week. You could also freeze it indefinitely if you won’t use it all right away.

Ingredients:

  • Two cups of butter
  • Salt to taste, or other preferred herbs or flavorings

Recipe:

  • Put two cups of cream into a food processor, or for those with smaller processors, fill it just about halfway
  • Process on low speed for about 7 minutes, or until yellow lumps start to form
  • Pour off buttermilk
  • Rinse butter with ice cold water until water runs clear
  • Add desired ingredients and pulse a few times to incorporate them; for simple salted butter, use a quarter teaspoon of kosher salt, adjusting to taste
  • Place butter on cheese cloth and wring extra liquid out
  • Wrap in wax or parchment paper and roll into a log, or place in an airtight container
  • The butter keeps in the fridge for about a week or in the freezer indefinitely

If you don’t have a food processor, but you do have a jar with a screw-on lid, you can also make butter at home!

Alternate Recipe:

  • Fill a jar with a screw on lid half-way with cream
  • Shake the heck out of that jar. Keep shaking until butter solids form. This can take seven minutes or more, depending on how hard you shake
  • Once the butter has formed, pour off the buttermilk
  • Rinse the butter with ice cold water and place butter into a bowl
  • Let it come to room temperature and mix in preferred ingredients
  • Place in the fridge until it firms up a little, roughly 10 to 15 minutes
  • Place butter onto wax or parchment paper and roll into a log, or simply scoop it into an airtight container
  • The butter will keep in the fridge for about a week or in the freezer indefinitely

Like I said, butter is really easy to make at home and you can impress your friends and family with knowing how to make it. Flavored butters are great additions to meals and also great, inexpensive homemade gifts, especially around the holidays. You can also use the buttermilk you get from it to make bread, biscuits, or other baked treats which you can then spread your homemade butter on!

Break up the bay leaves, place in the jar and say:

I add the herb of Bay that protects and brings good fortune,

Hold the jar and visualize a white light filling the jar and charging the contents of the jar. Seal the jar. Gently shake the jar to mix the contents. Go to the location the bottle will be buried/placed and say:

Bottle of protection I place you here, So that no negativity causes strife or fear. Protect this home both day and night, Give would-be intruders a nasty fright.

Bury this bottle close to the front door of your home. If that is not possible, place it close to the front door.

Quick Breads

Hands down the best quick bread recipes I have ever made! From the Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book (1989), with a couple tweeks I made.

(🍞 Tip: Substitute the shortening for butter, and half of the white granulated sugar for packed brown sugar (which is already done in the written recipes above). It makes a huge difference!)

🙅🏾You don't have to go home but you can't stay here 🙅🏾

How to make unwanted guest leave

If someone is going to stop by your place and you don’t want them to stay, place your broomstick behind a door (try and make it a door close to an exit) with the broom part in the air.

This is something my neighbor thought me as a child and it’s always worked.

If anyone else knows of this trick and knows the magic behind it, please share with me I would love to know why.

Everyday Witchuals for a more magickal home

Some discreet tips for you broom-closet witches, some lavish tips for the full-fledged witch, and some of my favorite in-betweens!

  • Sweep with a broom (besom) regularly. To the mundane eye, you’re clearing away dust and crumbs, but any witch knows you’re really spiritually cleansing and charging your home.
  • Put a line of salt on your windowsill for protection.
  • Forage fallen sticks to tie into a pentacle with twine. Hang as a wreath on the front door.
  • Candles in every room. I have great luck finding totally unused candles at thrift stores around town!
  • Call it “aromatherapy” if you’re still a secret witch, but utilize scent as the powerful thing it is! Burn insense. Have athsma? Try essential oils and scented candles. Budgeting? You can always put herbs and teas into the wax of a melting pillar candle to release the scent (I love doing this with chamomile and lavender, it doubles as an anointing of the candle).
  • Bake bread. Knead it with intention, cut a sigil in the top before baking, indulge in the act of creating.
  • Open windows to bring in the element of air and purge your home of bad or stale energy.
  • Collect and display little things from nature: pinecones, stones, crystals, dried flowers, acorns, feathers (if you’re permitted). Altars don’t need to be obvious, they can just be things that make you grounded and glad.
  • Live. Always remember that anywhere a witch lives is magical, whether you feel it or not. Do these little things for yourself, to cherish feeling connected, but witchcraft is not about pressure or conforming.
Enjoy 🔮🍂🍁

Steam Cleansing ♨

Since incense makes me sneeze, I’ve been resorting to a different method of cleansing lately - steam cleansing! It’s exactly what it sounds like, using steam to cleanse your space.

Ingredients:

  • A pot, to be used for boiling water
  • Essential oils of your choice (about 50 drops total)
  • Water

Instructions:

  1. Add about 2 cups of water to your pot depending upon how large it is
  2. Otherwise, just fill the pot about halfway with water
  3. Add 50 drops of whichever essential oils you choose
  4. Turn on your stove, and let the water boil
  5. You should start to smell the essential oils throughout your house in very little time
  6. When the water has almost completely evaporated, turn your stove off
  7. Let the pot cool down and proceed to wash it as you would usually do with your dishes
  8. The scent tends to linger all day, if not longer
  9. Repeat as necessary :)

Essential oils for cleansing:

  • Anise
  • Camphor
  • Cedarwood
  • Citrus oils (bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, lemongrass, lime, orange, tangerine)
  • Dragon’s Blood
  • Hyssop
  • Lavender
  • Oregano
  • Peppermint
  • Pine
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Sandalwood
  • Spearmint
  • Thyme

Basic Stationary Cleansing

Sprinkling directs the cleansing, however liquids may also be used as stationary cleansers:

  1. Place any of the cleansing formulas recommended in Asperging Spells […] (but especially Florida Water and Notre Dame Water), in shallow uncovered pans.
  2. Situate them strategically through an area, to absorb negative energy and provide a cleansing effect.
  3. Replace weekly. If the liquid starts to look odd or smell strange, however, replace it immediately.

New Home Floorwash

This is recommended for a preliminary cleansing when moving into a new home. This removes old vibrations and emotions lingering from past residents and allows you to begin with a fresh slate.

  1. Make a strong infusion from basil, hyssop, and pine needles.
  2. Strain and add to a bucket of rinse water, with vinegar.
  3. Cleanse floors and surfaces as needed.
