Wind Cleansing

Now that i’m getting consistent results with grounding and centering and basic energy circulation i decided it was time to start cleansing, and the method that has been really calling to me is using wind. Luckily it has been quite windy here these past few days so I’ve had many opportunities to go walking along in the wind

  • whenever there is a particularly strong gust, I visualize it blowing bits of energetic gunk and detritus off me. This looks like olive-y yellow-green wisps.
  • i try to comprehend the scale of the atmosphere, visualize the entire earth rolling in a bubble of air, stirring up vast currents that circle the globe, the immense forces involved in moving something we think of as light and insubstantial. All this I call upon to grab and scatter unwanted energy sticking to me. It is nothing next to the power of the wind.
  • i also think part of the effectiveness is in forcing yourself to pay attention to something (air) which we are not often actively perceiving even though it is so important.
  • for me, it helps even more when it’s a bit chilly outside. I live in a fairly cold climate and seem to have an energetic/magical affinity for cold. It’s been about 45F/7C on most of my recent walks. I focus on the sensation of chill seeping in through my skin and it makes me feel very pure and clean.
  • when the wind catches my hair and i get goosebumps on my scalp it is pure poetry and bliss.

Rainy’s Wind Charm Tutorial

By Rainy-Day-Witchcraft

In the lore and history of weather witchery, it was common of weather witches to create and sell knotted rope charms to sailors, as it was believed these charms would help enchant the wind in the ship’s favor. These charms were made by venturing to a high-windswept place, and tying certain sailers knots into rope to capture the wind while imbuing them with magick ~ sometimes multiple knots were tied, meant to contain winds of different strengths.

While reading about these wind charms, I was inspired to write a more modern project tutorial on how to make such a charm, though mine will be a touch more decorated! These wind charms can be hung above a porch or in a window to encourage a wind to blow away storm clouds, to represent wind or air in a spell or ritual, to summon a wind (similar to wind whistling), and for any other wind-related uses you might find you need witchcraft-wise.

 Materials:

  • Thick twine or medium rope of your choice
  • Dried lemongrass or anise
  • A branch or piece of alder, oak, or scotch broom
  • Beads, bells, small bottles, and decorative elements

 Capturing Wind

The first step, of course, is to capture the wind using knot magick ~ The knotted rope will serve as the base of the wind charm. You can begin with a plain rope, or make it thicker or more decorative by braiding or macrame-ing multiple smaller ropes together beforehand. This first step is the longest in the tutorial, as it will take some time to find the right conditions. Traditionally, three single knots are made in a rope ~ But for this tutorial, we are going to be knotting the rope three times, each consisting of more smaller knots, to capture and represent different buildups of wind energy - If you wish, you can replace the knots with different sailors knots, if you know how to do so. Here’s how to do this:

  • Near the top of the rope (leaving a section of 5-7 inches for hanging, depending on the length you make it), you will knot it 3 times in the same place during a day or in a place where the wind is gentle, like a breeze. As you do this, recite:

Tied of three, knots capture this breeze

Contained by my hand and quelled upon these skies

The gentle air I seize - For my swift magickal disposition

  • A few inches below the previous knot, near the middle, you will be knotting it 5 times in the same place during a day or in a place where the wind is stronger; not a breeze, yet not a strong wind ~ somewhere in the middle. As you do this, recite:

Tied of five, knots gained of brisk wind

Direct and ardent as I exert its’ energy

With my intent and by my will - Magickally intertwined

  • Near the end of the rope, leaving a few inches hanging off the end, knot the last one 7 times at the same point during a day or in a place where the wind is strong and powerful, such as during a storm or on a high ground frequented by strong winds. As you do this, recite:

Tied of seven, knotted storms of the heavens

Vigorous and powerful,

Energy of formidable wind - Seals my magick of air

(Feel free to replace my chants with your own)

 Decorating and Imbuing

Step 1. ⌇ Between the first and second knots, and between the second and third knots, we’ll be adding herbs associated specifically with wind magick to keep your charm charged and functional.

In the first empty length of rope, tie a bundle of dried lemongrass or dried anise - both strongly tied to the element of air. Or instead (how I made mine), get a small-ish corked bottle, and add the herbs to the bottle in smaller pieces ~ Attach the bottle into the charm - which I especially enjoy the look of!

In the second empty length of rope below the second knot and above the third, tie in a branch or chunk of alder wood, oak wood, or a bundle of scotch broom. Again, you can break the ingredient(s) into smaller pieces and instead put them into a bottle to attach to the charm if you wish. Both alder and oak were traditionally used in making flutes, whistles, and ‘bullroarers’ for whistling up winds, and scotch broom is used in weather brooms, spells, and charms to call up winds. (Tip: scotch broom is the most connected to weather witchery out of the three, so I suggest finding a place to buy or collect some specially for this charm)

Step 2. ⌇ Now that the magickal materials are on the charm, you can decorate it however you like ~ For mine, I attached colorful glass beads and tiny bells; Other items to use connected to wind and the air element include feathers, ribbons, the colors yellow and white, and bits of shining metal or glass, etc. If you worship a deity tied to the weather, skies, or winds, a figure or symbol of them may be added.

Step 3. ⌇ Once your charm is to your liking, hang it up on a porch or in a window or doorway. On days when you don’t wish to call or whistle the wind to you, remove the charm ~ You can hang it on a wall for decoration when not in use, or just put it in a bag or box until you need it again.

Personal note: The day I finished making mine and went to hang it in the window, I looked out my bedroom window to see a small ‘tornado’ of dust (we get them commonly in the dry seasons out here) quickly form and dispel in the backyard area nearest me!

If you have any questions or comments, you’re welcome to message me. Thank you ♡

Elemental Wards

A follow-up to my Crash Course on Warding. I’ve been thinking of different ways to do energy wards lately, rather than just “here’s an energy barrier that keeps X out.” If you like working with a particular element, here are a few ideas.

Fire

  • Burn away impurities as you enter your home (stress, worry, etc.)
  • Burn anything that would wish you harm
  • Add warmth to your home

Water

  • Wash away negativity
  • Wash away residual energies from work, etc. so you don’t bring your job home with you
  • Drown anything that would wish you harm

Air

  • Blow away negativity
  • Keep the energy in your home circulating to help avoid a stale, stagnant atmosphere
  • Lift you up to a happier state as you enter your home

Earth

  • Ground as you enter your home and reconnect with the earth
  • Negativity falls through cracks in the ground
  • Vines trap anything you want to keep out

Four All-Purpose Spells

Avatar
witchthetics
These spells are designed to be used when no other options/materials are available. They may be altered to suit your taste. They are ideally done outside, but with a little improvising, can be performed inside as well. Each spell can be used alone or in conjunction with other spells. This information is from Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs.
The Earth Spell
Place the appropriate herbs in a bag and take to a wild place. With your hands, dig a small hole in the Earth and pour the herbs into it. Strongly visualize your need. Cover the herbs and leave the area. It is done.
The Air Spell
Stand in an open place on top of a hill or mountain, far from tall trees, buildings and other hills. Hold the appropriate herbs in your dominant hand and, facing north, blow a little of them in that direction. Do so in the directions of east, south and west. In the direction of west, blow all of the herbs from your hand. Visualize your need strongly, stating your intention if you wish.
The Fire Spell
Create and draw a symbol representing your need on a piece of paper that has been cut into a triangle. While visualizing your need, place the appropriate herbs in the center of the paper and crumble it tightly so that the herbs are sealed in the paper. Build a roaring fire in an outside pit or indoor fireplace. Throw the herb packet into the fire. As it touches the flames, focus on your desire. Continue to do so until the packet has been consumed by the flames.
The Water Spell
Bring the appropriate herbs to a river, spring, lake, or seashore. Hold them tightly in your dominant hand and visualize your desire. With a sweeping motion, scatter the herbs into the water. The energy has been sent.

The Magick of Booze: A Correspondence Table

This is my own personal correspondence table for the use of alcohol in magick. It may not match your own usage of alcohol, but if you like anything you see, feel free to adopt it. Some of this is based in what the alcohol is made from, some on its history, and some of this is based in personal experience or associations. This is not about alcohol as an offering, but the usage of it as a spell component. The list is in no way exhaustive and does not include mixed drinks or brands. Just your basics.

Distilled Spirits

  • Absinthe: (Air) Useful in protection work. It is especially useful for safe astral travel. Using it to draw sigils for safe travels on one’s body before leaving it can keep away nasties in the meantime.
  • Gin: (Earth) Useful in spells promoting good health and is good as a binding ingredient for other alcohols’ properties. It can also be a good to use if the caster of the spell lives in poverty and this is pertinent to the spell in some way.
  • Rum: (Water) Useful in money spells or spells for gaining other material possessions. Rum can be especially useful in a spell involving an underhanded motive or intention, especially if the results leave you with more as a side effect of the spell’s main goal.
  • Tequila: (Fire) Tequila is all about timing. Perfect, exact timing. It can be used in spells involving punctuality, appointments, or decision making. It can be used when something has to be done just right, as well. Never use it for something involving the past or anything about the future. Tequila is always for the present, and in this moment, as they come issues.
  • Vodka: (Fire and Water) Good for strength and courage. Lifting yourself up by the bootstraps and carrying on with what needs to be done no matter how hard it is or how tired you are. Can be used in spells involving getting through difficult times, motivation, pushing forward, finishing projects. Shit’s gotta get done? Vodka.
  • Whiskey: (Water) Whiskey can be used in spells to promote change, usually when change is unwanted by someone else. It helps bypass interference and bring the change about in ways that which opposes it does not immediately notice.
  • Brandy: (Earth) Brandy can be used in love spells, especially those for preserving pre-existing love. It can also be used for attracting a long-lasting love as opposed to a fling.

Fermented Beverages

  • Beer: (Earth) Beer is used in spells involving the home, family, and the past. It can also be used in spells involving practicality vs desire.
  • Cider: (Earth) Cider is used in spells for harvesting what you’ve already planted. It helps ensure that the things you’re working towards are successful and your effort is not wasted. But you must put in the effort.
  • Wine: (Earth and Air) Wine can be used in spells for health, stress relief, and blessings. It can also be used for spells involving standing on your own and independence.
  • Mead: (Air) Mead can be used for spells involving inspiration, study, education, scholarly pursuits, the arts, and oratory issues. It can also be used to sweeten the temper of yourself or someone else.
  • Sangria: (Fire) Sangria is good for happiness spells, celebrations, and anything involving good times and fun. It is also good for spells meant to broaden horizons and promote new experiences.

Elemental Anxiety Meditation Masterpost

This is a series of four different meditations based on the four classical elements.

They stand alone, so you can choose to do any single one. You do not need to do them all.

What does “exit the meditation safely mean? Are these dangerous?”

These meditations are not dangerous. Whenever you get in to a very relaxed and imaginative state, it is always good to come out of it slowly so things won’t be jarring or unpleasant.

Helpful little notes……..

  • DIRECTION: East - the place of sunrise.
  • TYPE OF ENERGY: Projective.
  • BASIC NATURE: Flying, moving, fresh, intelligent, suspending. Sound is a manifestation of this element
  • . PLACES: Mountaintops, wind-swept plains, cloudy skies, high towers, airports, schools, libraries, offices, travel agencies, psychiatrist’s offices.
  • RITUALS: Travel, instruction, study, freedom, knowledge, recovering lost items.
  • RITUAL FORMS: Tossing objects into the air, suspending tools in high places, fanning light objects, visualization, positive thinking.
  • MUSICAL INSTRUMENT: Flute, all wind instruments.
  • Air represents mental activity, thoughts, reason and intellect, memory, knowledge, persuasion, birth and friendship, freedom, clarification and expression. A low Air person seems without any direction and unable to define or visualize any future and can not reason out the alternatives and objectives. A high Air person is at ease in complex situations and can sit and think things through, and can carry through with decisions.
  • It’s feelings are moist heat, it’s season is Spring, it’s direction is East/Mental, the symbol is the Wand, Athame, or the smoke of the incense. It’s colors are White, Lt Blues, Yellows and Green. Moon phase is the first quarter and it’s time is Dawn.
  • Different types of Air Magick include Visualizations. An important tool in any magick work, it makes the events happen. For this type, it is important that all the other factors such as color, time, the moon phase, winds, etc. are all in balance. And to have the other tools working such as incense and candle burning, or even the right tea or wine to drink in the background. This is because you need to “fix” or “ground” the images or ideas you are using in your visualization.
  • As our thoughts are extremely powerful, as are our Words. Words can be put together in such a way as to form spells, or used in channeling your power. Words give rise to our desires and can be released upon the winds for attainment. Created and repeated with intensity and concentration the spoken word is a powerful magick in itself. You do not have to be an accomplished linguist, just a simple sentence will do. It creates an atmosphere of concentrated awareness and strength. Words can be used in moments of stress and fear, and will create the magick itself. It does not have to be said aloud, say them to yourself if need or want be.
  • Another Air Magick is Mirror Magick. It can help in overcoming inner problems and also help with difficult personal decisions. It uses both the Word and Visualization forms and can also aid in being able to visualize a future event. Sometimes, used as a Scrying Tool, in which you are able to “see” possible future events.
