“There was a path, a fairy path there, into Ralahine, an’ there was always a dog on that.” -Drumline, September 19, 2001
“As an indicator of the otherworldly, the Black Dog is known in many lands, and in Ireland is regarded as a frequenter and protector of fairy sites such as their dwellings and pathways. Normally, the same dog is seen over several generations in the same location, huge, often immobile, watching menacingly, though rarely dangerous if left in peace. Few of those who encounter this creature choose, after their experience, to investigate more closely!”
~Eddie Lenihan & Carolyn Eve Green; Meeting the Other Crowd, The Fairy Stories of Hidden Ireland (2004); pg 91
what breed of dog is this
this is a Pachliopta kotzebuea butterfly, she’s so black the light won’t even bounce off her wings, that’s why she looks like a butterfly-shaped black hole on camera :)
Along the wild Pacific coast of British Columbia, there lives a population of the sea wolves. “We know from exhaustive DNA studies that these wolves are genetically distinct from their continental kin,” says McAllister. “They are behaviourally distinct, swimming from island to island and preying on sea animals. They are also morphologically distinct — they are smaller in size and physically different from their mainland counterparts,” says Ian McAllister, an award-winning photographer who has been studying these animals for almost two decades.McAllister captured the magic of these wolves in breath-taking pictures.
As he swam towards them, “the curious canines approached him so closely that he could hear them grunting into his snorkel. He took several frames, then pushed back into deeper water without daring to look up,” writes the bioGraphic. One could almost call these sea wolves pescatarians – 90 percent of their food comes directly from the ocean, with a fourth of it coming from eating salmon. On top of having distinctive food patterns, sea wolves are also excellent swimmers, with their farthest record being swimming to an archipelago 7.5 miles from the nearest landmass. (Source)

what is this life, really, truly?
in all honesty this is the most unreal, surreal, unimaginably magical thing i’ve ever seen in my life. they make sounds and i never knew. these things are gigantic. i’m so awed.
i make that noise when i want food too
The Japanese dwarf flying squirrel may be the cutest thing I’ve ever seen with my own two eyeballs.
despite its colourful appearance, the hawaiian bobtail squid (euprymna scolopes) has the ability to render itself invisible to predators from bellow, thanks to a luminescent bacteria, vibrio fischeri, which inhabits a special light organ in the squid’s mantle.
the bacteria, which are fed a sugar and amino acid solution by the squid, produce luciferase, an enzyme that facilitates a biochemical reaction that produces light.
the nocturnal squid, who can control the amount of light produced by the bacteria, are able to ensure that they are not silhouetted when passing through the light of the moon or the stars by emitting an equal amount of light on their underside to that which hits them from above.

This alien-like creature has been discovered 12,139 feet below the surface of the ocean. It was discovered by NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer near Guam in the western Pacific Ocean. It has been described by scientists as a “stunningly beautiful jellyfish” and is believed to be an entirely new species.
Reminder that something like this actually exists on our own planet for real
Melibe colemani is a nudibranch that’s basically half transparent. Half PERFECTLY transparent. There’s skin encasing these branching tubes and you just can’t see it. If you look close you’ll see pieces that look like they’re floating separately from the rest.
H.P. Lovecraft was afraid of the ocean just because fish and octopuses were too weird for him and he never even managed to make up anything this dreamlike and confusing
