A middle school teacher in Berkeley, California, accused of punching a neo-Nazi during a 2016 protest is arguing that standing up to fascism is not a crime.

Yvette Felarca, 47, was arrested last month for her involvement in a June 2016 anti-fascist demonstration held in Sacramento.

Felarca, who is a member of an activist group called By Any Means Necessary (BAMN), has been charged with felony assault, as well as two misdemeanor counts of inciting and participating in a riot, according to KPIX TV.

Footage of the demonstration appears to show Felarca repeatedly punching a member of the Traditionalist Worker Party, a white nationalist group described as ”a front for neo-Nazi sympathizers” by ABC 10. The taller man is holding up his hands while trying to get police officers to help. Other protesters drag the man to the ground before the police intervene.

At her arraignment last week, Felarca told the court that the charges against her are false and should be dropped.

“Standing up against fascism and the rise of Nazism and fascism in this country is not a crime,” she said. “We have the right to defend ourselves.”

Back in 2016, Felarca told reporters that the goal of the demonstration was to “shut down the Nazi scum.”

“They are organizing to attack and kill us,” she said at the time, according to Al Jazeera. “So we have a right to self-defense. … That is why we have to shut them down by any means necessary.”

Felarca told the Los Angeles Times back then that her group’s protest was a success because it chased away the neo-Nazis and kept them from recruiting new members.

Felarca’s next scheduled court date is Oct. 4.

She is scheduled to teach at her Berkeley middle school when the students return later this month and cannot be legally fired unless she is convicted of a felony, according to KPIX TV.

no one wants to hear it but love is earned after the initial infatuation. commitment is something u both mutually agree to and then from there it’s work. it’s not work like it’s a chore it’s jus work like it takes effort. to get good at these things takes practice. it takes practice to learn to communicate better and it takes practice to learn to love each other in the ways u need to be loved.

I don’t purposefully allow the accents of your name to fall flat on my tongue like the European English demands or the language to sound chopped and misheard.

If I don’t say your name correctly, don’t shrug and say it’s ok because people have been doing it all your life. Your mother worked hard to name you that name, with all its syllables and apostrophes and hyphens and inflection.

I don’t want to disrespect your heritage, your culture, your great grandmother or grandfather and their struggle.

If I mispronounce your name, forgive me, but don’t let it happen again. Make sure everyone knows your name.

As a teacher, I have to pronounce a lot of different names from a lot of different cultures - and I want to pronounce each of them correctly. I always tell my students to correct and I apologize if I get it wrong.

oh and not to mention trump’s FCC allowing a highly conservative news broadcasting company “Sinclair” to take over 72% of american households.  this would mean that whenever most of us watch local news, random ass conservative-based segments would pop up. such as praising trump, blatand Islamophobia, and calling us “libtards” and “snowflakes” for simply wanting equal rights for the marginalized. pay very close attention to this bc the trump administration is literally trying to take over the media and if obama or any other president tried to pull this shit off they would be impeached immediately.

Maybe put it on a canvas instead of someone’s property, and we can all be happy.

who paying for these canvases or the art programs so these kids can have that? Why should it matter if these run down buildings that never get fixed up anyway get graffiti’d? 

Therein lies the issue. Art programs, both visual and performance based, are the first programs to be cut. Canvas ain’t cheap. Neither are the supplies. Much of the graffiti that takes place IS on buildings that are run down. The gov’t didn’t place any value on these properties and yet get pissy with dudes “vandalizing” their shit. You can’t have it both ways, ya dig. 

My father was a garment contractor in LA. In the late 80s, he owned the building where he had his factory. He thought it would be a cool idea to commission local graffiti artists, usually young Black and Latino men looking to stay out of trouble, to paint murals on his buildings. After all, he runs a garment design/manufacturing company, and creative signage is great advertising.

One day, he showed up to the building and the city just painted over the murals without permission or notice.

First, the city told him he couldn’t have graffiti art on HIS building because it brought down property value. After he complained, then they said: ok you can do this, but you need a permit. After he got the permit, then the city said: ok, but you can only use these artists.  Of course, these artists were all White graphic design students from USC, and of course they charged 3x more.

There is a prejudice against this type of art, and it’s racial.  Banksy vandalizes folks buildings all the time, and folks treat him like the Messiah. He ain’t doing nothing new that Black and Brown folks haven’t done for decades.

This whole post…I just find it really interesting! And sad, too, but good thing to read.

today a dude slammed my finger on accident because he was closing a metal drawer i had my fingers in and i was on drive through and i literally screamed into the headset and the lady just kept ordering her drink as i was trying to hush down three different LOUD MEN SAYING “OH MY GOD WHAT DID HE DO TO YOUR HAND”

One time I was either coming down with or getting over a bad sinus infection and suddenly had a coughing fit while helping a patron at the front desk.

And I mean, my face was red, I was practically choking trying to stop, doubled over, nearly on the floor, my coworker was asking if I was alright.

And the patron just kept talking like nothing was happening. Just kept describing their mundane problem/request while peering over the desk and down at me on the floor gagging.

One time while I was still working in a bakery, I was putting a loaf of a customer’s bread through the slicer. (Thankfully this was a fairly automatic process.) And I just up and passed out. Fell right over, blacked out for a second. I didn’t really know how I got on the floor. But the slicer was still going and no one has noticed. So I just finished the guy’s bread and gave it back to him. Then I calmly walked into the back of the bakery to tell my co-workers I passed out. They got me to go sit down, drink some orange juice and take a break. Then it was right back to work. So then I was taking this lady’s cake order and my one co-worker looks at me and asks if I’m okay. I can feel the faint coming on though so I look at the customer, say “Excuse me,” and collapse on the floor right next to the counter.

We once had a patron drop down dead of a heart attack on the restaurant floor, and while my co-worker was trying to administer CPR, another patron tapped her on the shoulder to say she hadn’t gotten her cake yet. And then when she didn’t get it, complained. Like that is some evil villain bullshit right there, and that’s not even the worst of my stories from working in customer care.

What is it about receiving service from other people that makes humans turn into pure evil???

I once had a couple put (for whatever fucking reason) a solid wood nightstand on our conveyor belt. Of course I had to pull it off, but because of the way they’d put it, the front drawer came flying out and clocked me right in the face. I was blinded by the pain for a good two minutes and had to check that my nose wasn’t broken. And there’s this couple just standing there, tapping their feet and huffing at me for taking too long, “because [they] had to get going”.

Never underestimate how little people consider you a human being when you work in customer service.
