So I’ve noticed that there is a LOT of criticism and hate towards The Mortal Instruments because they say that Clary and Izzy hated each other for a long time for no reason what so ever. May I remind you that they met at 15 and 16, and they were both in a place where they were putting each other’s loved ones in danger (not on purpose, but they didn’t really see that).
Clary’s mother had just been kidnapped and she was just told that she had been lied to her whole life, so she wasn’t exactly being neighborly to Alec, Izzy, or Jace, RIGHTFULLY. She sees these three people and everything in her life is uprooted. The tension against Isabelle and Clary was just put under the spotlight because they are both girls and people seem to be expecting immediate respect and love. Not to mention, she was worried Isabelle would break Simon’s heart.
Isabelle had met this girl who comes into her home and all the sudden everything is paused to help her, making her- again, RIGHTFULLY- irritated. And her brother has fallen for Clary, but is miserable thinking that he could never be with her.
Both of their lives are being torn apart and changed in book one, and there is a war heading their way, it’s inevitable that they both lash out. WHICH AGAIN, CLARY LASHED OUT AT A LOT OF PEOPLE, BUT PEOPLE ARE ONLY ANGRY ABOUT THE FACT THE GIRLS DIDNT INSTANTLY LIKE EACHOTHER.
And the tension was cleared at the end of book ONE. Need proof? Well here you go...
“‘Clary!’ It was Isabelle, swooping into the foyer in a long red skirt, her hair piled on top of her head with jeweled clips. ‘It’s so great to see you!” She descended on Clary with a hug that nearly overbalanced her.
‘Isabelle,’ Clary gasped. ‘It’s good to see you, too,’ she added, letting Isabelle pull her up to a standing position. ‘I was so worried about you,’ said Isabelle brightly.”
“Clary looked at Isabelle curiously. ‘I didn’t expect you to be this glad to see me, I have to admit.’”
“‘Why not?’ ‘I didn’t think you liked me that much.’ Isabelle’s brightness faded and she looked down at her silvery toes. ‘I didn’t think I did either,’ she admitted. ‘But when I went to look for you and Jace, and you were gone...’ Her voice trailed off. ‘I just worried about him; I was worried about you, too. There’s something so... reassuring about you.’”
“‘And I guess I resented you at first, but I realize now that was stupid. Just because I’ve never had a friend who was a girl doesn’t mean I couldn’t learn how to have one.’ ‘Me too, actually,’ said Clary.”
- City of Bones, pages 499-500
Yes, their tension was petty, but they recognized that, and apologized, calling themselves out on it. They both agreed that they were being unfair and they had a mature conversation explaining how they felt, and their relationship was great after that.
