Potter and Nimbus Brooms by Steve Thomas is available for $10 today only (7/15) at TeeFury
I’m about to leave for my final Harry Potter midnight show ever. I’ve been absolutely in love with the series for a decade now. I’m 20 years old—that’s literally half of my life. Knowing that I’ll never have another Potter book or film to look forward to after tonight makes me feel really, really strange. I’m not sure how to describe it.
I grew up in a rather strange environment. The bulk of my family struggled with substance abuse issues and I’ve always felt that I was largely raised by myself because of that. Nevertheless, their influence trickled down on me. I lived with neanderthalic, drug-addled, casually racist homophobes and, naturally, I was poised to become another neanderthalic, drug-addled, casually racist homophobe. After all, children are impressionable. I think discovering Harry Potter when I did—at the tender age of ten—was the first thing that taught me about the world outside of rural Kentucky. And I absolutely fell in love with it.
Harry Potter taught me about the power of seemingly powerless people. Experiencing Harry’s personal struggle between good and evil helped me deal with my own, more subtle, turmoil. When my home life became a drag—and, given the circumstances, my home life was frequently a drag—I could just hole up in my room and drift away from that world and into Harry’s. And it’s that world that taught me the lessons that my parents never did. I think it taught me to love everyone—every single last person—that I meet.
The series did even more than that, though. It also taught me that reading could be “cool”. It inspired me to start jotting down words of my own and I’ve been positively enamored with writing ever since. I’m always writing. Every dream job I can think of concerns writing. I’m in college now; I want to become an English teacher. It’s all because of Harry Potter. I read other things, sure, but none of them left an impact as profound or as prolific as the one created by JK Rowling’s silly little book series.
I can’t think of anything else—no interest or hobby or pastime—that has taught me so much or given me so many hours of joy. I don’t always like me, but on the good days I think I’m pretty alright. And I credit most of the positive things about me to a series of books and films I found when I was ten. A series of books and films that—finally—concludes tonight.
Thanks, Jo. You saved me.
Great piece. I took my daughter and 3 of her friends. Was a very good movie, I think. And yeah, they were sad that this big part of their childhood was coming to a close. But, the books and movies will always be there to enjoy. :)
