Dr Loomis (Donald Pleasence)

Halloween 1-6

During his mission to stop his murderous patient, Dr Loomis unwittingly serves as the killer’s herald for us viewers, his fearful concern and grim predictions adding to the power of “the shape’s" presence, building it up as much as that insistent piano score. In fact I’d even argue that without him Michael wouldn’t have been half as scary as he was. See the utter horror conveyed by Pleasence at realizing that the “Evil is gone”, his subsequent attempts to convince ignorant authorities of the threat Michael Poses, and that chilling final line. I’d also say that it’s his subplot which really holds the film together and is far more engaging than anything not featuring Michael himself.

It’s testament to the strength of the character and Pleasence’s talent that this increasingly haunted doctor made even the worst of the later sequels watchable. And though Malcolm McDowell delivered an interesting take on the character in Rob Zombie’s “re-imaginings", it’s Pleasence’s troubled and heroic version I prefer best.

"I met him, fifteen years ago. I was told there was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding; even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong. I met this six-year-old child, with this blank, pale, emotionless face and, the blackest eyes… the *devil’s* eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up because I realized what was living behind that boy’s eyes was purely and simply… *evil*.
