TAKEOFF A male Great Sapphirewing was perching on this slender limb when it suddenly burst into flight at 12:27 PM on September 17, 2016 at the Yanacocha Reserve on the northwestern slopes of Volcán Pichincha just to the west of Quito in northwestern Ecuador. The left foot has lifted off, but the right foot is still on the limb. The Great Sapphirewings is a member of the hummingbird family Trochilidae and lives in the high Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, and Bolivia.
