Miss Cairo Jones, April 14 1946, newspaper strip by Bob Oksner.
In the 50′s DC’s love and war comics didn’t have any continuing characters. then late in 1959, they came up with Sgt. Rock and he was a hit.
In 1964 they decided to give it a try in one of their romance comics with April O’day, Hollywood Starlet.
Created by Bob Oksner she ran for eight issues of Girls’ Love Stories and then disappeared. I guess it was just a little too depressing to have a character whose whole thing was to find love each story only to be heartbroken again so she could be free of relationships for the next issue and start all over. Sure Sgt. Rock got shot at, but damn that’s mean!
Of note, Bob Oksner is also the person who created Angel O’day of Angel and Ape a few years later.
The total of April’s run is shown above.
