#Repost @girlsreadtheworld (with @report.for.insta) ... This is going to be a short review, you guys. Not because I'm too busy to write a long one, or because I don't have a lot to say. But because I have so much to say that I couldn't possibly include it all here, and because it all basically boils down to one thing: YOU MUST READ THIS. 🙌 I don't know how she did it, but author Mira Jacob @goodtalkthanks managed to create basically the perfect book. It's an illustrated series of "life's most uncomfortable conversations" and touches on everything from parenting to being brown to sexuality to 9/11 to living in a Trump America. Sometimes it's laugh out loud hilarious, and sometimes it's cringe-laugh out loud and sometimes it's totally sobering. But it all works. Like, really works. 💪 I got this from the library (and read it in one sitting, btw), but I'm definitely getting one for the permanent collection - bonus: it's the most fabulous coffee table book (look at it!). Please do yourself a favor and go enjoy this one. #Repost @girlsreadtheworld (with @report.for.insta) ... Oh hey there, another anthology of amazing women! ❤ I actually met author Emily Arnold McCully at a @pen_america committee meeting a few months ago. She came in, totally unassuming, nonchalantly plopped down her new book and I was like, 😍. So let's pick one of the women in here, shall we? *scrolling table of contents* Aha! Joan Ganz Cooney. Guys. This woman's story SO AMAZING. Do you know her? Do you know what she did? She is responsible for Sesame Street!! Ok, but let me back up. Cooney grew up in the 30s and 40s, at a time when there were few opportunities for women outside of the home. Cooney took one of the few there were - and majored in Education. After a series of fortuitous connections and meetings, Cooney found herself employed as a documentary producer (something she'd never done before) for the then faltering Channel 13 tv station. It wasn't long after that that she found herself doing research on and then pulling together a plan for educational television shows for children, and Sesame Street was born (did you know that Kermit the Frog was specifically introduced as a tool to fight racism??). 💪 I LOVED reading about this incredible woman, and I have SO MUCH respect for her. And she's still going strong as Chairman of the Executive Committee of Sesame Workshop’s Board. I had no idea about the origins of Sesame Street and children's educational programming and I'm so excited to have learned about her in this book! Every woman in here is just as incredible, and this is such an excellent anthology. Plus there is some excellent #backmatter about second wave feminism and a list of sources for additional reading! 🙌 It took me way too long to finally pick this one up, but kudos to the library for finding it pretty quick after I put in my request! And speaking of libraries, please go check out my last post where I'm running a #giveaway for a $25 donation to the library of your choice!
