Lol yeah, I think season 6 was still airing when I started. I first dipped my toe in when the season 5 ep “Sam Interrupted” was on (as a rerun on TNT), and I had no idea who the main characters were or what the show was about beyond the supernatural of course, plus it was in the middle of the episode, so since that was too bizarre an episode to start on with absolutely no foreknowledge on, I noped out.
After that I saw Supernatural was on again, and it was at the beginning of the ep, I decided to give it a real shot, and it was ironically on the season 1 ep “Asylum” and got hooked on the fact that each episode was like a mini horror movie, while interested in the brothers. It was a back-to-back rerun on TNT so I watched the next ep “Scarecrow” too, and started falling hard for the brothers’ relationship after the made up at the end of that episode. After that I continued watching reruns through the season 2 premier (sans “Bugs” and the ep after it for some reason).
Then next time watched reruns on TNT it was airing season 5 eps (not sure how I missed that many, but oh well), so at that point I watched from “The Song Remains The Same” to the end of the season (I had never seen M*sha or Matt before and their appearances are somewhat similar, so I got them a bit mixed up when Michael!John appeared for a moment lmao 🤣 sorry Matt). When the rerun of “Swan Song” was on I saw the beginning and end of the ep, but for some reason missed the middle, and after having my heart broken by the end of the ep I had 2 thoughts: I HAVE to go and watch the whole episode and catch all of the eps that I missed and there had BETTER be a season 6 lol thank goodness I saw that there was, so I did go and watch all of “Swan Song” and then binged the rest of the episodes that I missed, in order of course.
I was hands down gone for Sam and Dean’s bond by the time I watched AHBL 1&2, and heartbroken after that finale too, I think I actually cried the first time I watched those eps. I didn’t start checking out the online fandom until after I caught up, and was at first a destie! fan, not a big shipper, but I enjoyed it all the same. Then, while I was looking at Supernatural art online, I discovered Wincest, and when I realized other spn fans liked it and that I could see the little jump they made from the canon relationship to these fanon fantasies and how much sense it made to me, on top of the chemistry, I fell in love and it became my OTP. At this point I was enjoying Wincest and wincestiel, until I realized that Wincest kind of ruined wincestiel and destie! for me lol but destie! and wincestiel weren’t completely ruined for me until I came to tumblr and discovered the destiehellers.
I get some people having destie! as a default ship since they don’t want to ship an incest ship, I even understand having a healthy obsession with a ship and just loving the shit out of it, but I don’t think i’ll ever understand the hardcore obsession some of them have with the ship, to the point of making mountains out of literal minutiae (and sometimes actually nothing) in an attempt to make that ship at all plausible, I mean, i’ve had my fair share of unrealistic fantasies of ships and shows, but this is ridiculous and sad on a level i’ve not seen before.
