Things shifted in and out of focus: the heat of an explosion across his back, the sounds of city traffic, Deadpool cursing, hitting cold tile, people yelling over him, the pad of a stretcher, a kind face of concern…
Carey woke up sore, but without a scratch or bruise on him; just a certain level of exhaustion that he couldn’t pinpoint. It went beyond mental or emotional into something else, something he’d never felt before.
“Hey, you’re awake,” a soft voice smiled from the doorway.
He looked over to the brunette and smiled. “You the night nurse?”
“I’m Dr Christine Palmer.” She entered the room, examined his chart.
“I’m concussed, I don’t know what I’m saying.”
Christine gave a laugh. “Your vitals are remarkable for...anyone really.” She looked him over carefully, critically. “I see no signs of injury, no swelling...How do you feel?”
“Better than when I arrived, much better that you’re here.”
“That the best you can do?”
“I’m at the mercy of a beautiful doctor I’ve already insulted, pity me.”
“You are pretty pitiful,” she teased. “So...Mr Gambit, wanna tell me what happened?”
“Your dog tags said Remy Gambit.”
“My name’s Carey that’s...just what they put on there.”
Carey looked away, shook his head. He knew and he didn’t know and either way he wasn’t telling. “Best you stay out of it.”
“Are you in trouble, Carey?”
“I can handle myself.” He looked back, smiled. “Would you like to see a magic trick?”
It took everything she had to keep a straight face. “I’d love to.”
With focus Carey managed to move a cup of water on the tray-table smoothly and swiftly into his hand without spilling a drop…at least some of his powers had benefits. He took a sip, then let go of the cup so it was suspended mid-air. He smiled at her.
She smiled back. “I confess, I’m impressed.” In part because her gut said this wasn’t an illusion, it was real like Stephen’s abilities or those of the mutants she’d heard of in the news.
“Enough to let me slip out without a paper trail?”
“Please,” he asked in earnest, letting the cup go back to the table. “Not for me, for you. Your hospital, coworkers...Your other patients.”
Christine got the sense he’d run anyway and, without the agreement, he’d never come back, so she attempted to bargain. “I need to know I didn’t just let a patient who was in your shape coming in go without a follow-up. It can be off the record, but I wanna see you in two weeks.”
“Fine, two weeks,” Carey nodded, his hand extended. “Take out the IV.”
So, basically, Carey’s teleportation kicked in, sent him and Deadpool to a hospital where Deadpool tapped out and fled, leaving Carey behind...then this happened, haha! Christine Palmer is Dr Strange’s ex, for those unaware, and in the comics becomes a medical professional named Night Nurse who specializes in superhero patients, haha! ...The Remy LeBeau/Gambit thing will slowly be revealed, as will Carey’s indescribable exhaustion...
