To be honest I feel really sorry for Gally because the scene in the movie where Thomas is like “Gally, what have you done? Aside from HIDE behind these walls?” And you can see the literal hurt and anger on Gally’s face.

Because excuse you in the movies they built their homes from scratch. Excuse you GALLY, built their homes. Without their HOMES -And their FOOD shack and the BARN for the animals. They wouldn’t fucking be there. They would have starved LONG -LONG. Ago. 

Thomas whined about Gally not “doing anything” after sleeping in the bed Gally built.

I liked this idea that there was this element of what Gally’s doing here. He knows this is kind of how you remember your name - he’s not just being a bully, or “I knew I could beat it out of you” type of thing. There’s a line, I think, originally where he was like “I knew I could get it out of you”.
