I don't have a preference for or against dialogue prompts but I don't really like the way they're more "open ended" and can apply to many different situations. That's not really helpful for me, especially in one of these 'prompt a day' events where I have to think of something to write and fast. If the prompt doesn't have a certain amount of structure I get overwhelmed by possibility. Not that anyone is wrong for wanting the open-endedness! But personally I think they're just exceptional prompts, rather than there being anything inherently more attractive about dialogue prompts.

(Also I always feel awkward and weird about changing the dialogue into something the character would actually say, even if the meaning doesn't change. I write fic for a lot of fandoms where characters tend to have a more antiquated way of talking so this is often necessary, but I always feel weird and bad about it.)

it's interesting to hear different perspectives on this!

and they are great prompts, like i'm not mad about them getting so many votes, i totally get it

I usually hate dialogue prompts because they feel like they both don't give me any real ideas/can feel too vague, and at the same time, because I'm a stickler for making sure all my dialogue matches the character's "voice", dialogue prompts feel like they drastically cut down on my character options for the prompts. Like for instance, "hostage swap" and "take me instead" conjure up similar stories in my head, but a lot of my favorite victims wouldn't necessarily say the words "take me instead", so it can feel like thatline has to be awkwardly shoehorned in despite not making sense for the character. But all this is to say that I actually like a lot of the dialogue prompts up for voting this time haha, they're good prompts imo

that definitely makes sense! that's why i think it's a good thing to have some variety in the prompts, some dialogue, some vague, some more specific, and all of them up for very free interpretation

I honestly hate the dialogue prompts (not asking you to ban them or change the event for my personal preferences or anything of course, just wanted to join in the dialogue vs non-dialogue convo). I am surprised they are winning the vote.

yeah, looking at the poll there doesn't actually seem to be a clear preference for dialogue prompts. i read some tags and i understand that they can often be used in a more generic way and in different situations whereas some non-dialogue prompts are more specific and could potentially feel restricting. or maybe just those dialogue prompts in the voting list are particularly inspiring rather than all dialogue prompts in general

hi yeah i consider sickfic as part of whump, there have been fics and other creations with that focus in this event the past years so it's definitely welcome!

Hello. I see looking back that you mentioned last year maybe getting another person to help with reblogs for things like your squicks/nsfwhump fics, have you ended up going through with that?

yeah Ive thought about it a bit but i think i wanna keep doing this by myself for now. just for the purpose of reblogging/archiving works i can do "blind" reblogs, so if the tags are correct i can just copy them and not look too closely at the content. i tried that a bit last january and it worked fine. i won't be reblogging every single work, like the last years it'll be a more or less random selection (the way whumptober and febuwhump do it too)

I always saw angst as the emotional hurt to whump’s physical hurt (whether mild or intense). I’m glad both are included in the event!

yeah i personally prefer the physical hurt aspect of whump but i do think it encompasses every type of hurt! i guess angst and emotional whump are very similar if not the same, but i suppose that's just preference of terms/overlapping definitions/personal interpretations

Do you consider angst and hurt/comfort to be part of this event, or is it purely whump?

i see both angst and hurt/comfort as categories of whump, considering that whump just means a character getting hurt in some way, physical or emotional, intense or lowkey, torture, sickfic, environmental, with or without comfort, and so much more

as long as a character is hurt, pretty much anything goes
