Warnings: Mentioned past torture.

Right Hand sat in the interrogation room. They had nothing to worry about, the team was well and operating with a high success rate.

But they knew they weren't called to this room to take compliments. They tried to keep their composure but couldn't stop themselves from leaning on the edge of the chair and stiffen their back as the door opened.

A figure entered the room, sitting in front of them without looking at their face. The lights dimmed, the small red light of the camera hanging on the corner of the room flickering. The interrogator opened the voice recorder on the table, finally raising their head from the files.

"I hope you're settling well into your new position."

Breathe Me

Warnings: broken bones, captivity, torture, forced to watch

“Please! Please! Stop! Please!” Team Leader could hear Teammate One beg Whumper. Could hear them plead and beg with Whumper to stop. Could hear Teammate Two banging on the bars of the cage. Could hear Teammate Three’s sobs.

But Whumper didn’t stop. And Team Leader didn’t have enough air in their lungs to say anything. They couldn’t get a breath deep enough. Could barely breathe at all.

“Oh, Team Leader, how cute. Your team is begging for your life. What do you think about that?” Whumper said as they aimed a particularly vicious kick at Team Leader’s side.

What little breath Team Leader had went out in a huff. The world was greying out as they tried to suck in air, their broken ribs preventing their lungs from expanding. “Pl-pl–” was all they managed to get out before Whumper kicked them again.

Team Leader wasn’t sure how long Whumper beat them for. All they knew was the world went dark and when they next opened their eyes, Teammate Three was holding them.

Teammate Three blinked back tears. “Hey, there you are,” they said softly.

Team Leader tried to speak, wheezing coughs racking their body. Each cough, each breath was agony. Whumper had broken a few ribs.

“It’s ok, Team Leader, don’t speak. Just breath for me. Please. Just keep breathing.” Teammate Three cupped Team Leader’s cheek softly.

Team Leader nodded and closed their eyes, leaning into the delicate touch. Their whole body hurt. And they couldn’t take a deep breath. Their wheezing filled their ears. But they would keep breathing. For Teammate Three. For the whole team. For themselves. And to spite Whumper.

Prompt

Whumpee who escapes and returns to their team. They're happy to be back, hopeful for a good reunion, but their team doesn't react how they'd expect. Instead of a good reaction, the team immediately assumes Whumpee has betrayed them and beats them up, or hurts them in some other way.

Maybe information's gotten out while Whumpee was kidnapped. Maybe Whumpee has no scars or proof. Maybe Whumpee disappeared with no trace, or Whumper went to great lengths to make it look like they left of their own accord. Whatever the reason their team doesn't believe them when they say they're not a traitor.

So Whumpee escapes again, heavily injured, and ends up with Caretaker.

After a few months/years/whatever, their old teammates find out that they're not a traitor. Whether it's someone else or an accidental leak, they now need Whumpee for some reason. So they find them, and approach them to ask for their help, all apologetic (could be fake apologetic though). Caretaker's with Whumpee at the time.

From here, there's two options.

  1. Whumpee considers their proposal, but Caretaker gets angry at the team. "You assumed Whumpee was a traitor, hurt them, without even considering that they might be innocent? They were on your team for years and you nearly killed them without even listening! Do you know what state they were in when they got to me? Do you know what happened while they were missing? No, you don't, because you just assumed they betrayed you without even checking!" etc
  2. Whumpee gets angry. Caretaker obviously wouldn't be happy, but Whumpee... they're betrayed and angry and only now does their team think to check if they're actually a traitor? Only when they're needed does their team apologise? So Whumpee lays into them, shouting about how they trusted their team and thought they could finally relax, maybe they talk about their torture for the first time (or just the first time outside Caretaker). Perhaps their voice cracks at a point where they get very emotional. They thought they were safe, going home, and then they were beaten again. Maybe Whumper told them their team didn't care and they didn't believe them and then they were right.

Whichever option, the confrontation ends with the team being told to fuck off.

𝚆𝚑𝚞𝚖𝚙 𝚁𝚊𝚖𝚋𝚕𝚎𝚜 #𝟷:

Apologies. Just Apologies.

  • The stoic leader keeping everything bottled up, every injury hidden, every problem under wraps, because he so desperately feels like he has to protect the others. The rest of his team all thinks he’s a killjoy who takes things too seriously, but all of his behavior seems to make sense the day he finally breaks down (from pure stress, an injury, panic attack, etc) and he ends up repeating the words “I’m sorry” like a mantra, believing he’s failed them by not being strong enough.
  • Whumpee, newly rescued, lies in a bed with Caretaker by their side. Caretaker cups their cheek and softly says “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry we let this happen.”
  • “Please, I can’t do this,” Character B begs, shaky hands clutching a knife. Whumper chuckles slightly: “Would you rather me do it?” The prison cell smells of musk and the air is damp and suffocating. Character B looks back at Character A, who has their back pinned against the wall, eyes filled with fear. All Character B manages to say is “I’m sorry, this is for your own good.”
  • “I’m sorry,” Villain mumbled under their breath, looking directly down on the ground. “Pardon, I couldn’t hear you? Could you please just repeat that?” Hero’s voice was dripping with amusement, and they couldn’t help but smile while leaning against the doorway where Villain was now standing. “Hero, please,” Villain was more desperate than they’d ever been, clutching their side as another wave of pain washed over them. The grin on Hero’s face quickly turned into a frown: “No. You don’t have the right to barge in here and expect me to forget-“ Villain’s beath hitched at their raised voice and Hero’s eyes softened in realization- “Oh. You’re actually serious about this.”
  • The mug shattered as it hit the floor. “I-…I’m so sorry, I swear I didn’t mean to drop it, it just-“ Whumpee began shaking, stammering through their sentences as they bent down to frantically pick up the pieces of broken glass. “Hey, Whumpee, it’s fine, don’t worry.” Caretaker reached out and attempted to put a comforting hand on their shoulder, but Whumpee violenty flinched away: “I’ll do better, I swear-“ They looked up at Caretaker, eyes filled with terror- “I’m so sorry.”

late night whump thoughts:

a team with a rescued whumpee who they didn’t know pre-rescue. The whumpee is reclusive and withdrawn, just pretty stoic overall.

then they all get captured together. maybe it’s the same whumper, or maybe it’s a different one. but the whumpee starts quipping with them, smirking and rolling their eyes—and the team realizes with mounting horror that whumpee is more comfortable in a situation like that than they are with them.

"Misery loves company," Whumper says as they throw open the cell door. "Or so they say."

There's muffled scuffling and grunts echoing down the hallway. Someone cries out at the same time the sound of a body colliding with stone reaches their ears. Whumper just grins, leaning up against the barred door.

"So I brought you a little something."

Two guards drag forward a bound and sagging figure, stopping beside Whumper at the doorway. Whumper lifts the figures head with a rough hand and Whumpee sees their team mate's face staring back at them. Teammate is gagged and a gash above their eyebrow gives away how roughly they've been treated.

"What--?"

"Call it a gift, or a threat, whichever sits better with you."

"You can't," Whumpee whispers, before finding their voice and getting louder. "I'm complying! I'm already doing what you want!"

Whumper shrugs. "Well your old team don't seem to have got the memo to stop snooping around. Maybe this will help them learn the lesson."

Teammate is shoved into the cell, stumbling to their knees. Whumpee reaches out to help and Teammate scrambles away looking wounded, betrayed.

"I'll leave you two to get reacquainted. I'm sure you have much to talk about," Whumper says with a laugh. The cell door clangs loudly and locks them in the dark. "Enjoy the company Whumpee, you earned it!"

Three distinct ways that a whumpee/team member might end up being led away from a situation where they surrender:

  1. They chose to go willingly, to spare others, but the hostage taker/whumper isn't going to make it easy for them to return to their side. They're walked out, free of restraints, as though happily in comradeship with the bad guys. They leave the premises to shocked gasps, looks of betrayal, and any attempt to get someone's attention or make it seem like they don't have a choice will result in someone else's injury or death. It's only once they're out of sight of everyone else that the cuffs and blindfold come out, and they're left all alone in the back of a vehicle, helpless, wondering if anyone even believes they're a victim too.
  2. They surrender but the enemy still makes it rough on them. Pushed harshly against a wall or floor until they're all scraped up and bruised, arms grabbed while they're manhandled and painfully restrained. None of it necessary except that it sends a nice message. They're beaten or cut up, and walked out staggering and bloody. Everyone else aware of what awaits them for giving themself up to spare others.
  3. They offer their arms willingly, perhaps even given the restraints to snap into place themself. They're loose enough to just be for show. They won't resist, there is no fighting. They are led away with their head held high, back straight, and just a cursory bit of distance to show they're choosing this fate... until they're unceremoniously pulled or pushed and stumble to their knees unable to catch themself. They get gracefully back to their feet but it's not before everyone has seen them so easily overpowered, showing who's really in control now.

A critically injured/dying Team Leader chooses a successor to lead the team when they’re gone…and for reasons of their own that the rest don’t understand, their choice is the youngest/weakest teammate, who the others have never respected or listened to.

The Team relies on caretakers healing powers way too much. They are asked to heal every little cut, scrape and bruise and caretaker never denies them or complains. It exhausts them and their magic finally wears out at the time they need it most. They’re of course blamed when a member of their team dies when they’re not strong enough to heal a leathal wound.

Suggestion: a whumpee whose team only goes after them because they end up giving out the information needed. It’s not out of concern or worry, but because they’re livid that whumpee is giving up what the whumpers/villains wanted to hear and they want to stop the whumpee from ruining anything else

and maybe they attack the whumper's HQ carelessly, blowing rooms up without worrying if whumpee is in one of those rooms with the enemy. and maybe whumpee thinks they deserve it if they get hurt, because they *did* give up vital information.,,,

Today I'm thinking about the whump that happens after trying to help for too long. Bone weary, prone to injuries, careless bleeding hearts that mean well but just end up causing themselves harm.

Sleep deprived, working their fingers bloody, hands scraped up and easily bruising.

Or pushing someone out of the way, only to take the damage themselves, taking on extra workload to save their teammates, carrying the heavier pack without complaint for too long.

The painful grimaces hid behind others backs, the injuries tended too in the quiet of the night when no-one will see, fading into the background until they collapse with exhaustion and are found slumped against the wall unable to get back up

The moment when a special ops team is on a mission, everyone’s completing their tasks in their designated spots and a member gets ambushed.

Everyone else hears the nauseating screams over their comm system, not knowing what’s happening and not getting an answer when frantically calling for their friend and teammate.

The mad dash as everyone is desperate to get to their friend’s last known location, and finding their gear abandoned. That look of horror they share before the search begins...

Oh and then there is a point where the distrusted by team whumpee runs into another team who are actually nice to them. Whumpee was wounded and far away from others and next they wake up on another team's base and while the people there are somewhat distrustful and dislike, it does not give birth to casual cruelty. The team seems mostly just concerned with what whumpee was doing here, bleeding out and stuff.

Is this what group whump is?? Because I am living for it! This poor whumpee has been their team’s punching bag for so long, they can’t remember what anything else feels like. The people that took whumpee don’t lock them in their room; they are expected to eat regular meals, and the bigger/tougher members don’t push them around or force them to spar. Team Leader is stern but not cruel; they do make known whumpee’s limits while living in the team’s base, but they don’t use it to intimidate. Whumpee does eventually recover from their wound, but it’s a slow process; they’re already falling back into the habit of keeping quiet and small, and following orders as quickly as they can. They expect the same treatment from these people that whumpee’s last team gave them.

The whumpee joins the team and is not trusted immediately. But they're desperate to prove themselves, prove that the team can trust them.

The whumpee trains excessively, always first to train and the last fo leave, which leaves them exhausted and dehydrated.

One day, they finally get a mission. Everyone is expecting them to fail. The mission is very dangerous.

But the whumpee pushes themselves to complete it. They're injured, and tired by the end of it, and they're almost at the brink of death, but they complete the mission. The team realizes they were ready to die just for that one mission they had.

And they've succeeded in proving themselves.

After the team rescues them from Whumper, Whumpee hides their trauma behind anger. They harden their heart – less sympathy, less understanding, less mercy. Even if they go through the motions of psychological evaluation or therapy, they don’t internalize it. They aren’t really healing.

They fight more ruthlessly. Before long they’ve gained a reputation of terrorizing their enemies…and their teammates. When Whumpee seriously injures another member of the team during training, is it enough to get through to them?
