A vampire emerged from the foliage. Jim’s heart practically stopped in his chest.

It was Kane.

“No.” he whispered, dread consuming him. He’d been so close! He was out!

“Oh, fucking yes.” Kane snapped, marching straight toward him.

Jim held his makeshift stake out defensively, pointing it at Kane. “Back off, or I’ll, I’ll-”

Before he could even blink, Kane moved lightning-fast, grabbing the stick right out of his hands and tossing it away. “You’ll what, you little shit?” His bright-red eyes shone with anger.

“Master,” Jim squeaked, his eyes welling with tears. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, please.”

913 was a good enough pet.

He wasn't perfect, not by a long shot, but he was good at most of what he needed to do, his tasks. Cleaning wasn't hard. Neither was laundry, or dishes, or caring for plants.

Cooking was especially easy, that was 913's specialty. Not only that, but he enjoyed it, too. He didn't get to enjoy a lot of things at this place. Given it was his specialty, they would probably advertise him for that. Then he could cook every day for his owner and not have to worry about anything else.

However, while the chores came easy to him, the rest didn't. The pet stuff, the things everyone had to learn no matter what kind of pet they were. The positions, and how to talk all polite, that kind of shit. The respect crap, that was where he always messed up, and that was where he got his punishments. He wasn't trying to fuck up, it was just a lot to remember at once. He could never be a platonic.

913 rubbed at his collar. He hoped his owner would get him one without shocks. Even when it wasn't activated, the prongs dug into his neck all the time, and he hated it. Made him antsy.

But he didn't have time to worry about that right now. He grabbed his bucket to take to the other side of the room and continue his mopping.

"100913," Handler Schroeder called from behind as he stepped inside. 913 startled, dropping the water-filled bucket.

Fuck.

Jim's blood ran cold as he answered his front door to find himself face-to-face with a vampire.

"Hello, dear," the vampire greeted with practiced warmth. He spoke in a manner clearly meant to hide his fangs, but Jim could still see them, and his bright-red eyes made it all that much easier to tell. "So we meet again."

Jim stumbled back, eyes wide with terror. "What?" he squeaked.

The vampire gave him a closed-mouth smile, stepping inside after him, but not approaching further. Keeping his distance. "I suppose it would seem a long time for a human. You and I made each other's acquaintance thirteen years ago, I believe."

Kane wasn't sure which feeling was more powerful when he opened the door: relief or confusion.

He'd searched two nights for the human, finding absolutely no trace of him anywhere near. It was maddening. If he'd escaped, surely Kane would at least be able to catch somewhat of a scent trail? But there was nothing. He'd gone back to drinking pre-packaged blood since, too mortified of losing his human to even think about trying to take a new one right now, dreading the inevitability of his family finding out.

But Kane's family wouldn't find out, because after two weeks missing, his human was back. Curled up on his front porch, missing his shirt, shivering, covered in cuts, some still bleeding, and looking up at him in desperation.

“P-please lemme back in.” the human begged, tears in his eyes. “Wanna, wanna go back to my room. Please.”

I'm imagining captive Kane waking up in Jim's body, SO confused. He sees himself in the mirror and puts together what has happened. Despite the strange circumstances, he's relieved to be free of pain for the first time in so long but as he thinks about it he realizes, "if I'm here... then that must mean that Jim is...... oh no."

And Jim wakes up on a cold, hard floor, in a world of pain, and since he has no point of reference it takes him a moment to realize where he is and whose body he's in. And by that point the hunters would arrive to have their fun and Jim has to try to convince them that he's human. he swears. He's not supposed to be here!!

Would Kane try to find a way to save Jim? But how can he without contacting the hunters who tortured him? He'd be terrified.. He can't go home either, because he's not currently a vampire and would get eaten alive in vampire territory.

THIS IS GREAT. i have imagined "what if bodyswap au" before, but i've always imagined it in arc 3, present day. i've never even CONSIDERED a bodyswap during arc 2. this is genius.

oh, poor jim, the unluckiest man in the world.

kane would absolutely do everything in his power to save jim. the first problem would be finding him. kane doesn't know where the compound is. is prob able to find liz's phone number written down somewhere and call her for help. when liz first hears what kane has to say, she initially thinks jim is just having some kind of bizarre mental breakdown, but it becomes quickly apparent this is not the case. liz is horrified. immediately starts working on getting jim out of there, which is fairly easy for her to do. kane doesn’t even have to go. liz picks him up. kane is completely horrified to learn liz is a hunter, also. liz seeing kane in jim’s body recoil from her in fear makes her... really sad. she knows it’s kane, who she HATES WITH BURNING PASSION, but he just looks like jim.

jim is so incredibly confused and scared. he wakes up in an incredible amount of pain, and trying to explain himself just gets him hurt more. not to mention the fact that he’s unused to a vampire body, especially a starving vampire body. the sensation of total starvation is unlike anything he’s ever felt before. vampires also have much better senses than humans: the lights are too bright, the sounds are too loud, and he can smell everything. especially blood. jim isn’t used to having to restrain himself. gives into instinct and lunges at the first human he sees, and is punished severely with time in the sun for it, the worst pain he’s ever felt by a longshot.

liz manages to rescue him up pretty soon after this, and jim can’t even see or speak or move he’s so burnt. he can’t even really feed. liz pries his mouth open and drips as much of her own blood as she can into there. jim is clinging to her for dear life. liz is crying while assuring him “everything’s going to be okay, i’m here, i’ve got you.”

kane’s got... problems adjusting to being in a human body as well, despite how relieved he is to not be in pain- aside from the dull pain that never leaves his neck. he sees worse (can’t even see in the dark!), hears worse, and can barely smell anything. he’s still terrified of sunlight even though it won’t hurt him anymore. and humans have to eat so OFTEN. two or three times a day AND have to drink water. and so many options to pick from!!! he’s just glad he gets to eat again after years of starvation.

jim recovers within 2 days, being fed blood and all. once he’s brought back home, kane feeds him too. jim & liz keep kane. can’t exactly let him go running off in jim’s body, and kane’s too afraid to leave the house anyway. once jim is healed, the being-unused-to-body thing only gets worse. he’s so strong and so fast. keeps breaking things and running into walls. after that first day, he absolutely refuses to feed on liz. kane readily offers himself for feeding, teaches jim how to do it properly. this is the weirdest thing in the world to jim. feeding on kane in his own body.

a bunch of little butterfly effect things such as “liz kept in touch with caroline” and “the hunters actually made liz aware they were torturing kane” coalesced to make this happen! kane is much more injured here than he was when jim picked him up in canon.

i tried so hard to think of a way to work this into canon because it is actually Delicious but the time periods of "kane is too weak to bust down a door" and "kane goes outside" are mutually exclusive. so here's an AU!

Kane was fully on human time by this point. In fact, he got up even earlier than Jim, sometimes even earlier than the sun.

It was an innocent decision: I might as well take out the trash while I’m up, since it’s still dark. He had no reason to believe it would go any different than normal. The only thing that differed from the norm was that it was significantly windy outside, the air whistling around him. Out the back door, trash where it belongs, back to the house, where he noticed the door was closed. He’d left it open, but the wind must have knocked it shut. He tried to turn the knob, but it wouldn’t budge. It had locked automatically.

Kane’s mind went blank, just staring at his hand on the unmoving doorknob. Frozen.
