Left Behind
(This is just a one shot that I wrote after receiving some comments from @ash-den about my other hero/villain/sidekick Drabble, and I wanted to write some more similar stuff. Also, something for the others who came from Pinterest!)
The building all but exploded behind Villain as Hero came running out of it, dragging Sidekick and Lover with them.
At catching sight of Villain, armed to the teeth and walking towards the trio, Hero dropped Sidekicks arm and ran with Lover towards the getaway car.
Sidekick all but crumbled under the pain of a now obvious broken leg, desperately trying to crawl back towards the rubble of the still smoldering building.
Villain looked back and forth between the car and the Sidekick, and smiled, planting themselves between the Sidekick and the car.
If Hero wanted Sidekick, they would have to go through them.
Hero just started the car, and drove off.
Villain fired a couple useless shots at the back of the car, but they weren’t prepared for a gun fight.
They were waiting for Hero to come back for Sidekick, but when they turned around, it was clear that they were the only one.
Sidekick didn’t look surprised. He did, however, look terrified as Villain crouched down beside them.
They were about to demand to know where Hero was going, what they were planning, but then…
Both of Sidekicks eyes were blacked, and not from makeup.
There was a massive gash down his cheek, too clean and too old to be from the building collapse.
And there were bruises all down his arms, across his hands and neck. Blue and purple don’t appear instantly.
“N-no, please, don’t, please-“
“Shut up. Don’t move an inch, or I’ll make you walk with me.”
He looked down again at his leg and nodded, trying and failing to keep from hyperventilating.
Villain now pulled their own car around, pulling up a couple feet away from the trembling-but-otherwise-motionless Sidekick.
“Good,” Villain slammed their door behind them, now trying to figure what to do, “You’re gonna get in the car, sit down, and shut up.”
Sidekick tried to struggle to their feet, bracing himself against chunks of rubble.
He slipped, seeming to give up as he raised his arms above his head, pleading. “I’m trying, I swear, I can’t get up-“
“Here,” Villain sighed, slipping an arm behind Sidekicks back and pulling him up, “Watch your head.”
Villain wasn’t used to being gentle, but they tried not to be unnecessarily rough as they helped Sidekick into the passenger seat. It didn’t seem like this was a “normal” situation.
“Don’t cause any trouble, understand?”
Sidekick nodded quickly, scrambling to wipe away his tears.
Villain slid into the drivers seat and hit the gas, zooming back towards headquarters.
Thank god Assistant was a doctor, his leg looked bad…
Villain wanted to pinch themselves.
He’s not a stray puppy you idiot, you can’t be going soft just because he cried!
They snuck a glance over at Sidekick again. His hands were white knuckled, gripping the fabric of his pants in clear pain, silent tears pouring down his cheeks.
“We’re almost there. You’re not going to make a sound, and you’re gonna listen to every word I say, understand?”
Getting him into the headquarters was much easier than they had anticipated, and soon they were sitting Sidekick down on the metal table in the repair room.
The “repair room” had multiple issues. Guns, knives, crossbows, etc had all been polished and adjusted across this table. The same for car parts.
But “repairs” usually meant Villain being stitched up by Assistant after encounters with Hero. But now, it would be for Sidekicks encounter.
“Please, I don’t know anything, please-“
“I didn’t ask. Lay. Down.”
“Either you lay back or I push you down.”
He struggled to pull his leg up onto the table and scooted back, laying back against the metal.
But Villain knew he had been trained by Hero, and that meant they couldn’t trust him.
“Put your hands up over your head.”
“Put your hands up, it isn’t a question.”
They needed to call Assistant but they couldn’t leave him to roam free.
He obeyed, and they quickly snapped a pair of handcuffs around them, looping them through a rivet in the tables underside.
“Please, please, I can’t- I don’t know anything- I swear-“ Sidekick started to panic, “Please, please, please!” His voice rose to a shriek as he yanked violently at the cuffs, sobbing in pure unadulterated terror.
“That’s not- You’re fine, just, shut up, we’re gonna fix your leg, just-“
I need to call Assistant.
Villain stepped back quickly, pulling out their phone and punching in Assistants number.
“Hello?” Assistant sounded rather bored. Not anymore…
“Hey, what can I give someone to call them down?!” Villain hissed, trying to keep quiet.
“No I heard you, why? What’s going on?!”
“I need you over here as soon as you can, but until then, I need to know what to give him to get him to calm down!”
“Sidekick, Hero ditched him and he’s got a broken leg. I’ll tell you everything when you get here but he’s freaking out-“
“Well no shit! Give him some morphine if you can- Actually no, I’ll do it, I’ll be there in ten. Try to calm him down otherwise but if you can’t, stabilize the leg so he doesn’t make it worse.”
“Okay, okay, please hurry.”
“I’m on my way now, unlock the door.”
They turned back to where Sidekick was still panicking and yanking wildly at the cuffs, starting to draw blood.
To his credit, he really tried, but his breathing was still ragged and occasionally rough sobs shook his whole body.
“Calm down! My assistant is coming to help fix your leg but you have to be quiet and just breath…”
Again, to his credit, he tried, drawing in a deep breath but quickly letting it out again with a whimper.
“I’m sorry… I’m sorry…” he plead quietly, “I didn’t mean to.”
“It’s fine, just try again. Another deep breath.”
He tried again, holding the breath a little longer this time before letting it out slowly.
He obeyed perfectly, and Villain couldn’t help an encouraging smile. “Good job, now keep doing that, she should be here soon to fix you up.”
“O-okay, but I promise, I don’t know anything, I swear.”
“Alright, well-“ Their next words were cut off by Assistant slamming through the door and hurrying in, setting him on edge again.
“Holy shit, Villain, why?” she immediately fumbled through her bag, pulling out a small plastic case, “What happened?”
“I’ll tell you everything in a sec, let’s get his leg fixed up first.”
“Well duh,” she pulls out a needle and vial, drawing out a measured amount of whatever clear liquid inside with practiced ease, “Hold his arm, this’ll pinch.”
Villain gripped his arm, holding it flush to the table as Assistant poised the needle above his inner elbow.
He began to panic again, struggling fruitlessly against the grip on his arm. “W-Wait, what is that? Wait, no, stop, please, don’t-“
“This’ll just help you sleep. Sleep so I can fix your leg, just relax.” Assistant snapped, pushing the plunger down on the needle, and with a few last hiccuping sobs, Sidekick fell silent.
“You didn’t need to be so harsh with him…” Villain muttered, letting go of his arm.
“What, is he your pet?” Assistant jeered, setting her bag down on the counter, “I thought you weren’t one for picking up strays.”
“I’m not- He’s not, but just look at him…”
Now that he was unconscious, laying on the table with tears still drying on his cheeks, did they fully realize how…fragile, he looked. He couldn’t have been older than 25, and that was being generous.
“I didn’t give him those bruises. I dunno about his leg, that probably happened when the building collapsed. But, just look at him…”
“Yeah, I see. Still don’t understand why you had to bring him back here, you could have just left him. I’m sure someone would have come to get him.”
“I don’t know, okay, I don’t know. Maybe he could be helpful.”
“Still.” she digs through her bag and starts pulling out supplies, “Either way, he’s here now, so I’ll fix his leg up, but just know that this shouldn’t be a regular thing. I’m not a vet.”
“And he’s not an animal.”
“I guess you really are going soft. Pull down the light.”
Villain obeyed, snapping it on so that Assistant could see what she was doing.
