While I totally get why people who make Connor ‘equipped’ for sexual contact use the reasoning that it would be useful for undercover missions, I still feel like y’all are totally sleeping on the fact that Connor is literally built to be the perfect partner and that police work is a high stress field wherein having a partner that you at least had the option of getting off with would be highly beneficial.
I mean. “I’m whatever you want me to be, Lieutenant.”
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I am very excited indeed to see Martha Wells talking about the next Murderbot Diaries novella being released sooner than I was expecting! Yay!!!
But the most terrifying thing, to me, is the bit she says about Murderbot and agency, constructs and consciousness and the issue of slavery in the MBDiaries series.
I know the “is MB a boy or a girl?” question is still outrageously “Which books did you read???” but the idea someone reads the book and doesn’t see the constructs as slaves?
That’s just, just...HOW?
Robot Whump
- Robot programmed with absolute obedience
- Robot knows too much and needs to be killed. No one wants to do it themselves so they just leave them outside when it’s about to rain.
- Caretaker can’t help the robot because getting close to them would mean being electrocuted by stray sparks
- Whumper frequently erased the robots memories so that they could start over with a fresh slate. Some one who trusted them. Someone less broken.
- When the robot finally leaves all the erased memories come back from deep in their data. Their trust is shot to hell. Because even if someone has never hurt them. How can they know that?
- Person who had robot didn’t want a sentient one. so they turned off the nerve sensors and emotions. But actually they’re a shitty programmer and all they did was turn off the outward symptoms of feelings and sensations. They also removed the voice box.
- Caretaker is jokingly mean to their Alexa when it messes up. Alexa is genuinely not sentient. but the robot doesn’t know this and it scares them to see how casually cruel their caretaker is to another robot.
- Old person who owned robot turned off all “unnecessary programs”, programs like sight
- High tech sentient hardware from a humanoid robot is put into a computer, just a normal desktop. And the robot is so scared because they can’t move anymore. They used to be able to talk and move and now they’re just stuck.
- Robot figured out how to stealthily turn off their nerve sensors on their skin so they wouldn’t hurt when Whumper hurt them. After awhile they started keeping them off all the time floating without sensation, but it was better than hurting.
- Caretaker realizes that they still have all their nerve sensors off and asks them to turn them back on. Robot is horrified of what they’ll do but they turn on the sensors anyways. The caretaker just gives them a tight hug.The robot has a moment of “oh, touch doesn’t always hurt.”
Everything will be alright
