Soulmate AU where soulmates share a sense of taste. Character A knowing Character B hasn't been eating because they haven't tasted anything in a while. Their tongue itching when they eat something A is allergic to. Knowing they're overworking when it's cold coffee for hours on end. Knowing they're sick when they taste bitter bile. Knowing they're in trouble when all they can taste is blood.
I have a whumpee who was starved by whumper for a few weeks and became underweight, then when they finally escape they try to just go back to living their life like they did before, because they want to pretend it didn't happen. Would this end up backfiring for them? What symptoms would they experience?
It definitely puts them at risk for refeeding syndrome, a dangerous imbalance of fluids, chemicals and electrolytes as too much floods back into the system too fast. Symptoms include:
- Abdominal pain, bowel changes
- Difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Heart palpitations, increased heart rate, low blood pressure
- Muscle pain, weakness and breakdown of tissue
- Nausea, vomiting
- Swelling, rapid weight gain
- Paralysis
- Confusion and seizures
Refeeding syndrome can be fatal. They would need their electrolytes and vitamin supplements replaced slowly to give their body time to adjust. They'll need close monitoring by professionals, doctors, dieticians and nutrition specialists to make sure they're getting the right things in the right amounts.
rain world has SO much whump potential. crushing rain, blizzards later in the timeline, everything's either out to eat you or you're out to eat it (and sometimes both), areas that could definitely be whump heavy, risk of starvation... there is SO MUCH. i love it
Environmental whump is underrated!
“Wait, you don’t like [x food]? I wouldn’t keep making it for you if I knew you didn’t like it! Why didn’t you just say so?”
“Well, if you never know when you’re gonna get to eat again, you can’t exactly be picky...”
“May I have a bite, please? J-Just a small one, with your permission...”
“Of course, Whumpee. You can have more than a bite, take the whole plate. I made all this for you.”
Whumpee forgetting to use the comforts Caretaker offers, meals, meds, shoes, etc. just because they’re so unused to having those things as options that they don’t even consider them
Whumpee’s first Thanksgiving after their ordeal and being starved - they weep at the sight of so much food. They smile through the tears when they hear “eat as much as you’re hungry for.”
Whumpee who's bedridden, left alone by Caretaker for too long. They're starving but they aren't able to get up and they don't want to be any more of a burden than they already are so they just...wait and go hungry until Caretaker eventually returns
“Aw, sweetie, you should know how this works by now! If you’re not hungry enough to sit and beg nicely, then I have no incentive to feed you! Make me want it as much as you do.”
Imagine Whumpee getting drugged/otherwise knocked out and forced onto a boat. When they wake up they’re out in the middle of the ocean, no idea how long it’s been or how far they are from shore. If they’ve never sailed before, they may not know how to even get anywhere. Stranded, seasick, dehydrated and starving and lonely...
Whumpee having their first hot meal in what feels like forever, wolfing it down so fast that Caretaker barely has time to protest that they'll burn their mouth and hands
Whumpee trying to recover a sense of normalcy by getting back into familiar clothes, but they lost so much body mass in captivity that their old outfits just keep slipping and swamp them
Crack whump idea: Whumpee is in captivity and is given one meal per day. And that meal is: one (1) raw onion.
Just an onion. Unpeeled.
crUNCH
I’ll cronch to that, I like raw onions!
Whumpee imprisoned with A, and Whumper only feeds A and makes Whumpee watch, starving.
bonus: A is sympathetic and is able to hold a bit of food at the back of their mouth so when Whumper isn't watching, they can spit it up as Whumpee's only option for food.
Nice, nice! Sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures.
How long does someone has to be starved for refeeding syndrome to occur? And does starving mean no food at all? Or just way too less for a while?
It can take as few as five successive days of malnourishment for a person to be at risk of refeeding syndrome.
What would happen if someone ate 100 calories a day?
They would become severely malnourished and their body would start breaking down and eating itself to survive. The average death is three weeks.
I have a bit of a mess of character. He ripped his own eyes out, and thanks to magic that more or less came of the act, he got the gift of prophecy, but the wounds are incapable of healing and his sockets are permanently all raw. As such, using his gift makes him bleed from his sockets, but, he's got a mild case of hemophilia. To top it all off, he has an eating disorder. My question is, how long could he go without eating under the assumption that he bleeds let's say accumulatively about an hour or so every day with an in-house doctor taking care of the blood loss part, but said doctor is unaware of at least how bad the ed is?
It probably wouldn’t take long for the doctor to figure out something was wrong. Typically hemophiliacs receive at-home treatments two to three times a week. One study showed that the iron deficiency that comes with starving was significant after just two days.
