Red, she/her. Arospec Asexual. This is just a place to store some of my favorite whump tropes -- and to drop a prompt or two that may inspire great things from you! (Not a medical professional so take my content with a grain of salt.) What is whump? See the terms, definitions and FAQ in the pinned post!

how long would it take for someone to recover from being impaled in the side by something metal?

That's hard to say. It depends on how deep it went in, how much damage it caused to vital organs, how much blood was lost, if an infection like tetanus sets in, etc. For example if it punctured a lung, recovery could take six to eight weeks. If it damaged something like the spleen, it could be eight to thirteen weeks. Tetanus could add a month or more. TLDR if blood loss didn't kill them first, it would probably take at least a few months.

After taking things a little too far, Whumper is forced to give Whumpee some recovery time (if they want the fun to continue much longer, that is). To pass the intervening time, Whumper amuses themself by describing to Whumpee, in exquisite detail, *exactly* what they'll do with them as soon as Whumpee has recovered.

Ooo, and I can imagine Whumpee trying to sabotage their own recovery as soon as Whumper's back is turned so they can buy just a little more time before the torture they know is coming -- but of course that'll only mean another heap of punishment on top of everything else later.

Hi! First of all, I just want to say that I love your blog! It is really fascinating to read your prompts, althou I don't write any fics (for now). Second of all, I have a quick question. I'm working on a horror-detective story and want to sprinkle some whump in it. So, in the middle of a really intense investigation the main character lands himself into a hospital 'cuz of an attack of a beast-like horrific creature. But he is a very stubborn dumbass with no selfpreservation skills, so he's out in like 3-5 days. The problem is: I'm trying to figure out which injuries I should give to mc. I want him to suffer from a dangerous encounter with an eldrich monster and to feel the consequences of being beated like a ragdoll, but he also needs to have enough mobility to continue his investigation. I was thinking about breaking/dislocating his left arm (he is right-handed) and giving him a light concussion, but I want to know your opinion on this, 'cuz you have much more knowledge on this subject than me.

That's all. Sorry for a long ask and potentional mistakes (English is my second language). Have a nice day :3

Thanks for enjoying my blog!

On average it can take approximately seven to ten days to recover from a concussion and around six to eight weeks for a broken arm to heal. For a dislocated arm, they can stop wearing a sling after a few days and resume most normal activities within two weeks, but they shouldn’t do intensive exercise or heavy lifting for six weeks or more.

So depending on how intense the investigation activity is and how long it goes on, he could end up reinjuring the arm if he’s back in the action too fast. Maybe after the concussion recovery, he could focus on the information gathering/research side of things at his home base rather than being in the field, to give his arm a chance to heal further? Just a thought. You have a good day too!

hello! can you explain how a Caretaker might help a Whumpee beginning to suffer from heatstroke, but who isn't quite unconscious yet? and what would be the recovery/aftereffects for Whumpee?

Here are the symptoms [x] and here is the first aid: [x] Then at the hospital they may receive cool IV fluids, a cooling blanket, an ice bath, medications to prevent seizures and supplemental oxygen. During their recovery, their body will probably be more sensitive to high temperatures. They should avoid the heat and physical activity for at least a week and they’ll probably need periodic tests to monitor kidney and liver function. After they’ve had it once, they’re at higher risk to get it again.

Do you know what the symptoms of a ruptured appendix are compared to an infected appendix that hasn’t ruptured yet? Also what would the recovery look like for both? Tysm

When the appendix is infected, they may experience:

  • Fever, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite
  • Constipation, diarrhea, inability to pass gas
  • Bloated or swollen abdomen
  • Pain that may start in the upper or middle abdomen but settles in the lower abdomen on the right side, which increases when pressed on, walking, standing, jumping, coughing, or sneezing

If the appendix is removed without complications, most people leave the hospital in one to three days after surgery. They’ll probably be able to go back to normal activities within two to four weeks after leaving the hospital. Caution will be needed when lifting anything strenuous and climbing stairs.

If it bursts, they may experience a temporary period of feeling better because the high pressure in the appendix has been released, but it can lead to peritonitis, which is inflammation of the tissue covering the inner abdominal wall and organs. The symptoms are similar but more severe:

  • Faster breathing and heart rate
  • A higher spike in their fever, possibly including chills, confusion and weakness
  • An increase in the severity and constancy of the pain, which may spread to the entire abdomen
  • Buildup of pus (abscess), which may need draining and antibiotics
  • Sepsis if the bacteria spreads to the bloodstream

The peritonitis will be treated by cleaning the abdominal cavity during the surgery. They’ll receive IV antibiotics for the first few days and then take more orally for the next several weeks to be sure the infection’s gone. If they have an abscess, a tube will be inserted to drain it. It can take weeks, so they may be sent home with the drain in place as well as antibiotics. Recovery in that case may be four to six weeks or more.

How much time would it take for a whumpee (broken) to recover from the trauma? Would something around 14 years be enough? And I suppose they'll need a healthy environement... Any examples of it? Let say they only have a husband maybe?

I can never give exact times to questions like this. Everyone recovers at different speeds in ebbs and flows. Some take huge leaps and then regress. Some go slow and steady, little by little. But if they spend those years with a good support system -- gentle, understanding and empathetic family and friends (more than one, hopefully, so all of their burdens aren’t put on another single person) and professional help like a therapist, and if they’re open to receiving help, they probably have a good chance.

Caretaker takes Whumpee out shopping for nice scarves, ascots and neckerchiefs. Whumpee doesn’t like their throat being exposed now that they aren’t wearing the collar Whumper put on them, so Caretaker’s helping them with a healthier alternative.

Hi! First of all, I love Your blog, it is really helpful!

My whumpee is fidgeting when he sleeps. He broke his ribs in battle and my question is; should his ribs be bandaged? I know this is not recommended, but would it be necessary if the whumpee moved too much while sleeping? Is it better to immobilize his broken ribs?

Thank You in advance!🐥💜💛

No, bandaging them won’t help. He ought to be sleeping in a semi-upright position for the first few nights after the injury, braced with pillows to lessen the pain of movement. Very serious rib fractures, such as those that make breathing difficult, may require surgery. In some cases, this may involve using plates and screws to stabilize the ribs while they heal.
