Red, she/her. Arospec Asexual. This is just a place to store some of my favorite whump tropes -- and to drop a prompt or two that may inspire great things from you! (Not a medical professional so take my content with a grain of salt.) What is whump? See the terms, definitions and FAQ in the pinned post!

Do you have some prompts/ideas for wild west whump? I always thought that there are great opportunities for whump there but it's basically non excistent in the whump community...

Sure! Here are a few:

  • Whipping
  • Wagon accidents
  • Attempted hanging
  • Knife and gunshot wounds, especially if infected
  • Sunburns, dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke
  • Thunderstorms, lightning strikes, hail, dust storms, tornadoes
  • Animal attacks: spiders, scorpions, snakes, coyotes, wolves, etc.
  • Horses: falling off, getting bitten, kicked, dragged, trampled, etc.
  • Illnesses: dysentery, smallpox, measles, mumps, influenza, cholera, mountain fever, scurvy, typhoid, tuberculosis, etc.

Not gonna lie, one of the worst things about mucus that I don't see touched on very often in whump content is the taste. It's such a uniquely gross thing, it tastes sick in a way little else does

Forgive the randomness of this question, but google isn't being helpful to me. You CAN survive without your spleen, right? I imagine there are complications of course, if you know what sort of things that would cause feel free to share. I have a character who was shot with a handgun in the side in the area that would cause an injury to his spleen and slight damage to surrounding organs such as his stomach without fully killing him, and I don't know if they would remove a spleen due to damage or if other surgical procedures would be the go-to. He gets medical attention very quickly, if that influences anything.

-🎃

Yes, you can survive without it because other organs can take over some of its functions but it will leave him with a weakened immune system. He'll be more prone to sickness and infections, they'll develop more quickly/more severely and he'll take longer to recover after contracting them. It's recommended to take low dose antibiotics for the first two years after the spleen is removed -- and in many cases, the patient may stay on those antibiotics for the rest of their life.

how long would it take for someone to recover from being impaled in the side by something metal?

That's hard to say. It depends on how deep it went in, how much damage it caused to vital organs, how much blood was lost, if an infection like tetanus sets in, etc. For example if it punctured a lung, recovery could take six to eight weeks. If it damaged something like the spleen, it could be eight to thirteen weeks. Tetanus could add a month or more. TLDR if blood loss didn't kill them first, it would probably take at least a few months.

i read a fanfic where a guy got an infected wound and there is this scene where he was badly dehydrated but he's too weak to even get up and drink so the caretaker briefly considers wetting a rag and let the guy suckle on it like a kitten. he didnt actually get to do it, he ended up helping the sick guy by lifting up his head and slowly push the water in. but that phrase... let him suckle on it like a kitten... it lives rent free inside my head. oh my god. i didnt even know you could do that!!!! new whump prompt motherfuckers! help your whumpee rehydrate by letting them suck on a rag like a kitten!!!

Now that’s taking “poor little meow meow” to a very literal level! 👏👏

i don't know why but i've been obsessed with spider characters lately. like characters with six arms, venom, extra eyes, ability to produce webbing, maybe mandibles or little spider paws or fur. do you have any ideas on how to whump characters like that? obviously there's general dehumanization, but i was trying to come up with whump that would be unique to them and the best i got is tying them up with their own webs. do you have any ideas?

You betcha! Here are a few:

  • Arachnicide spray. Speaks for itself
  • Glue traps can be treated with bait or pheromone lures to get them stuck
  • They can get infections from parasites, nematodes, fungi, bacteria, or accidentally eating diseased prey
  • Sound torture. They're sensitive to soundwaves so strong vibrations can disorient and agitate them
  • Scent torture. They're reliant on their sense of smell, so strong odors like peppermint, citrus, eucalyptus and vinegar can repel and overwhelm them
  • Dehydration. Spiders need water to survive too. When dehydrated, they may start to shrink and shrivel, lose control of their limbs and find it hard to stand. When a larger spider species gets dehydrated, they may need to drink for several hours to recover
  • Temperature torture. They're cold-blooded; they can't generate internal heat. Their temperature is dictated by their environment. When overheated they can become feverish, have aggressive personality changes and go into fits. When overly cold, they become sluggish, stiff, inactive and can be forced into diapause (suspended development) or dormancy. (Some spiders hibernate to survive the winter)
  • Vulnerability to injury or attack during and after molting. They have to periodically shed their old exoskeleton to grow. Before molting they go through "premolt", where they stop eating and become very sluggish. Some spiders struggle to escape their old exoskeleton, injuring themselves in the process or risking suffocation if they can't get out, and even when they do molt successfully, their new exoskeleton still needs time to harden and become strong

Can teenagers have Bronchiectasis? If so would it greatly affect their daily life?

Avatar

It’s increasingly recognized but often neglected in children and adolescents. They may have chest aches, tightness or a feeling of fullness and become breathless and exhausted walking uphill, upstairs or longer distances. They’d probably have exercise intolerance, lower lung capacity and be more prone to chest infections; they could have three or more in a year.

Do you know what the symptoms of a ruptured appendix are compared to an infected appendix that hasn’t ruptured yet? Also what would the recovery look like for both? Tysm

When the appendix is infected, they may experience:

  • Fever, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite
  • Constipation, diarrhea, inability to pass gas
  • Bloated or swollen abdomen
  • Pain that may start in the upper or middle abdomen but settles in the lower abdomen on the right side, which increases when pressed on, walking, standing, jumping, coughing, or sneezing

If the appendix is removed without complications, most people leave the hospital in one to three days after surgery. They’ll probably be able to go back to normal activities within two to four weeks after leaving the hospital. Caution will be needed when lifting anything strenuous and climbing stairs.

If it bursts, they may experience a temporary period of feeling better because the high pressure in the appendix has been released, but it can lead to peritonitis, which is inflammation of the tissue covering the inner abdominal wall and organs. The symptoms are similar but more severe:

  • Faster breathing and heart rate
  • A higher spike in their fever, possibly including chills, confusion and weakness
  • An increase in the severity and constancy of the pain, which may spread to the entire abdomen
  • Buildup of pus (abscess), which may need draining and antibiotics
  • Sepsis if the bacteria spreads to the bloodstream

The peritonitis will be treated by cleaning the abdominal cavity during the surgery. They’ll receive IV antibiotics for the first few days and then take more orally for the next several weeks to be sure the infection’s gone. If they have an abscess, a tube will be inserted to drain it. It can take weeks, so they may be sent home with the drain in place as well as antibiotics. Recovery in that case may be four to six weeks or more.

lets say someone is being tortured and they have their arm cut off. whats the minimum care someone would need to do to prevent death? thank you!

They’ll need to control the blood loss as soon as possible, possibly with a tourniquet if direct pressure isn’t enough. If doing it the old fashioned way, they could tie off main arteries and smaller blood vessels and then stitch the flesh closed. After that they may need treatment for shock and potential infection, such as oxygen, IV fluids and antibiotics, maybe a blood transfusion if they lost a lot.

Just read something in a play that I thought you'd find... interesting I guess. So in Metamorphoses by Kafka, the main character Gregor (who is a giant beetle) has an apple thrown at him that sinks into his back.

He hides in his room, and no-one goes near him, and hes a beetle so he can't reach the wound, so the apple isn't removed. The wound can't heal and the apple begins to rot in his flesh.

So I thought the concept of a perishible item lodged into someone's flesh and then rotting is extremely horrifying and someone can probably use that for whump so here you go!

Ooo, that is a good one!

This is a bit specific, but do you know how people in the old west (1870s) would treat a bullet wound?

If it caused little to no damage to bone, the treatment was typically limited to the removal of the bullet, foreign material and bone splinters. Depending on the doctor, if they trusted the recently developing antiseptic system, they may also pack the wound with clean cotton batting soaked in carbolic acid.

If a bone was badly damaged or there was a high risk of infection, they would probably choose to amputate or excise the section of damaged bone (though mortality rate was higher in excision than in both amputations and conservative treatment.)
