Red, she/her. Arospec Asexual. This is just a place to store some of my favorite whump tropes -- and to drop a prompt or two that may inspire great things from you! (Not a medical professional so take my content with a grain of salt.) What is whump? See the terms, definitions and FAQ in the pinned post!

Do you have some prompts/ideas for wild west whump? I always thought that there are great opportunities for whump there but it's basically non excistent in the whump community...

Sure! Here are a few:

  • Whipping
  • Wagon accidents
  • Attempted hanging
  • Knife and gunshot wounds, especially if infected
  • Sunburns, dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke
  • Thunderstorms, lightning strikes, hail, dust storms, tornadoes
  • Animal attacks: spiders, scorpions, snakes, coyotes, wolves, etc.
  • Horses: falling off, getting bitten, kicked, dragged, trampled, etc.
  • Illnesses: dysentery, smallpox, measles, mumps, influenza, cholera, mountain fever, scurvy, typhoid, tuberculosis, etc.

Idk if you know about the show Better Call Saul, but I've been catching up on the series lately and there was this scene where the main character kidnaps some delinquents who mugged him, takes them to a warehouse full of pinatas and hangs them upside down from the ceiling, and is calmly talking to them while his guys smash the surrounding pinatas, gradually getting closer to the delinquents... I just had to talk about the extreme whumperflies I got in that moment. Sry if this doesn't make sense :p

Ooo, very nice, very nice!

Do you know if rope burn can leave behind scars? Like, if someone tried hanging themselves, or potentially got hanged for a crime or something, but they survived anyway, would there be visible scarring on their throat or would the marks fade away eventually?

Many rope burns are superficial and respond to at-home treatment without scarring, unless it’s a case where it’s deep enough to potentially get infected. At the very least, they’ll have noticeable bruising.

Okay, this was an idea I’ve had for awhile but I want someone else to see it to see if it makes sense.
So you've got your whumpee who is chained to a wall by a chain and collar. Typical… except it’s short enough to force them to stand, because they’ll suffocate if they attempt to kneel or sit. Therefore they’ll have to stand for hours at a time as to not suffocate.
Now that I’ve stated it in text, I wonder if it makes sense realistically.

Yeah, I think that makes sense? If I remember correctly the more common version of this is that the chain or rope is hanging from the ceiling, so they’re lifted higher and can barely keep their feet on the ground underneath them.

What happens if someone's arm is hanging up for long periods of time? Like, their arm is hung above them with chains but the rest of their body is just kinda slumped. They're like that for like 3 days, but i'm wondering if it'd cause any permanent damage other than obvious numbness and soreness from being like that so long.

It could overstretch the ligaments and injure the rotator cuff tendons, which would cause instability, reduced motor control and range of motion in the shoulder. Long term pressure on the nerves could cause neuropathy and loss of function and/or sensation in their triceps muscle, hand and fingers.

Hey, sorry to bother. Weird question, but can a rib support a person's entire weight? I mean I have a character, whose a bit underweight, and if I stab a hook just beneath his 3rd rib, can I leave him to hang like that? Feel free to ignore this question and have a nice day.

I would say no. Ribs often break when people are performing CPR because they can't support that weight. Not to mention that being underweight puts them at risk for lower bone mineral density.

If someone was hung but the rope was tied wrong and they ended up hanging there without a broken neck for a little while until someone could run up and untie him, how long can he feasibly be up there chocking? And if this happens again, almost the same circumstances but much shorter period of time, a few days later, would the damage the second time be worse just because of the previous damage?

They’ll probably be unconscious within thirteen or twenty seconds and then die within maybe four to eight minutes. Whoever comes to untie them better act fast!

I don’t think it would be plausible for it to happen again just a few days later because they would probably still be in the hospital. One such patient IRL was on an ICU ventilator and intubated for three days before they could even swap it for an oxygen mask. But if somehow it were to happen again at that point, they probably wouldn’t survive the additional damage.

If someone was cut up (not stabbed, but still bleeding) on chest and then had their back whipped (I'm thinking more horsewhip than a belt) what would the damage be? Could they survive? What would a hospital do? (Add this to probable dehydration and no food over the span of 3-4 days and hanging from the wrists where he can't touch the ground when he's conscious)

  • They could survive the shallow cuts if they avoid arteries.
  • Here's a post to help with the whipping: [x]
  • Dehydration could kill them. At 36 to 72 hours they can experience no urination, seizures, muscle spasms, shriveled skin, fainting and delirium and then organ failure.
  • Hanging for long periods could kill them. They would probably suffocate in only five to twenty hours.

If someone were strangled with a rope and then hung to make it look like a suic!de, what would be some signs a detective could pick up on to realize that it was actially a murdër?

Avatar

The bruising will be a noticeable sign. Hanging, whether done with rope, an electrical cord or a belt, always leaves an inverted V bruise, and is easy to tell from ligature strangulation (murder), which leaves a straight-line bruise.

Hanging compresses the veins, but arterial blood flow continues, causing small bleeding sites on the lips, inside the mouth and on the eyelids. With ligature strangulation, the face and neck are congested with blood and become dark red.

There may also be signs of a struggle -- damage done to the inside and outside of the victim’s throat, abrasions if the killer used too much force, maybe foreign material or DNA under the victim’s fingernails if they scratched at their killer, etc. I hope that helps!

What would the effects of someone being chained with their arms above their head long-ish-term be? All I can find so far is “it would be bad”.

Yes, it would indeed! Holding that position could suffocate them in only five to twenty hours. They’ll need to be let down and given breaks multiple times if their captor wants to keep them alive. I explained more about it here: [x]

Not sure if it’s been asked before, but what are the ramifications of being grabbed and dangled by an arm? The whumper I have in mind is tall and strong enough to hold the whumpee up high and dangle them over the edge of thingns engine grasping the whumpees hand or wrist. Wondering if there are any side effects or damage that can be inflicted so I know how far I want to push.

Depending on how long they’re hanging there, at what angle, how violently they struggle, etc. they could possibly have pinched/damaged nerves, strained or sprained muscles, the shoulder could dislocate...Things like that!

Hey! I just saw your tumblr and really appreciate you answering a bunch of questions. I, too, would like to ask one of my own. How long do you think a person can last tied up and suspended? If they would be fed, can they last a week?

Avatar

It depends on the position they’re suspended in. If you mean suspended as in the classic “hanging from their arms” position, holding that position could suffocate them in only five to twenty hours. They’ll need to be let down and given breaks multiple times if their captor wants to keep them alive. I explained more about it here: [x]

How would having the hands/arms restrained over the head for a week or so affect them? Would that + tight handcuffs lead to nerve damage?

If your character is human, holding that position could suffocate them in only five to twenty hours. They’ll need to be let down and given breaks multiple times if their captor wants to keep them alive. I explained more about it here: [x] But if you want a short answer, if the character can somehow survive it, nerve and muscle damage is definitely plausible.

What happens if someone wants to hang themselves but their neck doesn't break? How long does it take until they die and what could the caretaker do to help them when they are found? Since this is a suicide related question feel free not to answer for any reason. Love your blog, it's really interesting and helpful. Hope you're doing fine and corona doesn't affect you too much. Stay safe. Blessings from London

If they don’t die by a broken neck, there are a couple of other ways to die: by apoplexy, caused by pressure on the jugular veins, or by asphyxia, caused by stoppage of the windpipe. They’ll probably be unconscious within thirteen or twenty seconds, start convulsing, and then die within maybe...four to eight minutes?

If they’re rescued, the main priority is aggressive oxygen therapy. They may develop respiratory distress, brain swelling and pressure, and delayed pulmonary oedema (fluid in the lungs). One such patient was immediately intubated and put on an ICU ventilator, not to mention various medicines. He stayed unconscious for more than twelve hours, and had to stay intubated for three days before it could be swapped for an oxygen mask.

What are results of being hung from ones arms for a very long period of time?(like, a month.)

Avatar

If in theory they could hold the position that long, their shoulders would dislocate and their muscles would atrophy at the least. In the case of a human whumpee, they would probably suffocate in only five to twenty hours.

As all of their body weight is being put on their arms and shoulders, their chest and lungs stretch in a struggle to breathe. The only way they can is to use leverage from their legs to lift themself up and take the weight off their arms to open their chest. That can be incredibly painful, though, and the more they do it, the weaker they’ll become and the longer they’ll have to take between breaths.

Whoever hung them there will need to let them down and give them breaks many, many times throughout that month if they want to keep them alive. But if it’s a non-human whumpee who can handle the strain, let them stay there!
