Before the Sokovia Accords, Steve has an Avenger patch on his shoulder. / After the Sokovia Accords, it’s gone.

in screaming. im screaming. remember this happens over like… two fucking days. barely. so at some point during his desperate scramble to find bucky, keep bucky from getting legally shot in the face by the government, crash a helicopter into memory town, escape the hottest furry, squash himself into a hilarious dirty beetle frenemies roadtrip, and go through airport security (har) this dude actually sat his petty ass down and scraped the logo off

so everybody else was probably talking strategy in that white van– even scott lang for Christ’s sake– and meanwhile steve rogers, captain goddamned america, was sitting in the backseat with a nail file and a bottle of goo gone™, muttering about starks and leagues of nations and motherfucking austria of all places, and swearing viciously under his breath every time he jabbed himself in the thumb

and if sam didn’t record it secretly for posterity (stevewhyareyoulikethis.mp4) i will eat my hat

“heinous bitch” indeed.

okay but on the flip side of characterization also please consider that this is Steve Rogers, the man who wore a symbol until he became it. even before they let him BE something, be someone, they made him a symbol.

they dressed him up in spangly red white and blue and planted him on stages across america and then abroad, they put a shield in his hands that was more propaganda than protection to start with, and Steve got into the act quick.

this is a man who understands very clearly the power of symbols. he got shaped and molded into the All American Hero under stagelights and continued to be that walking banner out on battlefields where it was explicitly a target and a rallying visual for everyone around him.

this is Steve Rogers, just a kid from Brooklyn underneath the helmet and the flag costume and the museum monument to the myth, the legend, the symbol spackled to hide the man.

he is highly and finely attuned to the power of symbolism, to hat the visual cues stand for–and what they say you stand for.

so when the “A” shield on his shoulder changed into something he refused to stand for, he made it a priority to remove it. because of course he did. his entire career has shaped him to be so conscious of symbols and image that there was no way he wouldn’t have the time to think of it, to think of what it would like, what it would mean, and what it would seem to mean if he still wore that “A”.

he had to redefine himself away from it when it departed from his own principles and ideals and stood for something he found himself opposed to, and trust me that “you have to remove the Avengers patch, that’s not what you stand for anymore” was a reflex first thought of the kind it runs right underneath the action plans and the emotional spasms, the kind that becomes an undermining itch until you acknowledge and complete the thought with corresponding action.

and it’s right in line with how, at the end, as Tony calls on the carpet his right to bear the captain america shield, shouts down that Steve doesn’t deserve it–doesn’t stand for what the shield symbolizes anymore–Steve doesn’t hesitate to drop it.

he knows what symbols mean. he knows their power and he knows their weight. and he decided Tony was right, the shield wasn’t his symbol anymore.

so just like he scraped off the “A”, Steve dropped it.

#long post#i have a lot of steve rogers feelings okay#i mean drama queen for sure#but drama queen rolls right into and under the calculating awareness of what the drama looks like and means and how it warps and changes

Just wanted to chime in and say OF COURSE. Before becoming Captain America, Steve was an artist. Even if he never illustrated anything and just painted signs, Steve would know about iconography, symbolism - though today we’d be more likely to use the words branding and representation. I don’t think it’s dramatic at all- Images and logos are part of a visual identity and narrative - just another form of communication without words. And Steve- starting as an artist and becoming a costumed icon who starred in so many propaganda posters, tours, and films would know that actions and images can portray SO MUCH MORE than words can.

Also- dramatic? Seriously, look at any major organization who got caught doing or caught up in or even associated with any major scandal and chart how fast the rebrand happened or how quickly the visuals in their marketing campaign changed.

I’m just tired of some fans acting like it was a petty thing. It wasn’t remotely such and in fact shows his maturity, sense of responsiblity and sense of honor and it would obviously have been as much for those team members who signed that Accords as it was for himself. Not only would it be wrong(seriously what don’t people get about this?) for him to wear the symbol of an organization he has resigned from but it also potentially confuses the issue when it comes to how much the Avengers are responsible for his actions. He’s making sure people, people in positions of power in particular, know they are NOT in any way responsible for his actions and cannot be held accountable for them. Grow up people.

Amen.

Why so many people (and freaking Peggy included) are calling Steve dramatic is beyond me. Like Steve tells her he’s not sure if he’s on the right path? OMG dramatic! He removes the essentials logo of an organization he chose not to represent anymore? Holy cow, so petty! He’s trying to sort through some traumatic events and protect an innocent person? OMG he’s the selfish! Like seriously??!

Um, I also want to point out that by distancing his (illegal) actions from the Avengers’ franchise, Steve was FUCKING PROTECTING NAT, TONY, RHODEY, WANDA, AND VISION from the potential fallout from his actions. Sam chose to come with Steve, we all saw the moment when Steve said he could walk away without any hard feelings, but the others, he wanted to make sure that if (when) he had to pay the price for his choice, the others would not be damned by association. Ergo, NOT a drama queen/petty bitch action, but the actions of a man who knew he was going to have to go over the line, and didn’t want to drag his friends down after him. I think the word you’re all looking for here is SELFLESS, and CONSIDERATE, and ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS OWN DAMNED ACTIONS. /rant.

Yes this, thank you. Way for these people to twist Steve’s SELFLESS, CONSIDERATE, ACCOUNTABLE, RESPONSIBLE actions(I know I’m repeating but people need to have it shouted seeing as they can’t see the obvious on their own) into something petty and selfish. Says more about them than it does about him frankly.

Just a quick note that Peggy line is not in CACW.

Just let me go cry in the corner about one brooklyn boy I’m helplessly in love with.
