Friendly reminder that fan-made content (fanart, fanfic, fanvids, etc) are:

  • extremely time consuming. Remember someone actually took time out of their life to create that, time they could’ve used to, idk, sleep, for example
  • entertainment you’re consuming for free. I can’t stress this enough: you’re enjoying someone else’s craft for free. You paid exactly zero money to look at/read/watch it.
  • S H A R E D  with you, not made for you. This is the most important point: someone created that, put it online and you found it. No one forced you to consume that fanwork, you C H O S E  to do it.

Whenever you feel like leaving a mean comment, anonymous hate or make a ~clever post about how ‘lol look at all of these overused tropes every fic writer crams into their fics’ remember you’re being a dick to someone who shared their work with you. You’re not being funny, you’re not being edgy, you’re not being brave for calling something out - you’re being a dick.

honestly i think the secret to staying happy in fandom is to take no shit, spread no shit, and find your people. don’t get too invested that you can’t laugh at it all sometimes, and don’t seek out negativity. the more you look for a pattern of ugliness in an assortment of people who all happen to like the same thing, the more you’ll find it. if you try to be positive, considerate, and empathetic, fandom will reflect that back at you.

Gosh, okay, I wasn’t gonna post this, but the more issues that crop up on my dash and the more I think about it, these are things that I think need saying:

  • You don’t owe any stranger on the internet anything, especially personal information. Knowledge of your race, gender, sexuality, religion, location, background, etc. is not some random stranger’s “right”. You’re not obligated to tell anyone anything about yourself if you don’t want to. Just the same, you’re not obligated to anyone else’s personal information either.
  • You don’t have to justify writing for your muse. You don’t have to be part of a community to write a character from that community. Doing research and being respectful is what matters, not who you are.
  • If you see something you don’t agree with or like on someone else’s blog, just unfollow and / or block them. Life is too short for internet drama and call out posts. I realize there are some grey areas and exceptions, but generally the best thing is just to leave that person alone and move on. Whatever it is probably isn’t worth it. If you need to let out steam, do so in a healthy way that isn’t going to cause needless drama or stress. It’s better for you and for everyone else.
  • Mun =/= muse. If someone writes a serial killer or an abuser, that doesn’t necessarily mean the writer is also a serial killer or abuser, it just means they write one. There isn’t anything wrong with that. If they’re leaving their sensitive content untagged, politely ask them to tag it so you can blacklist it, or, again, just unfollow and / or block them.
  • If you wouldn’t harass a best-selling author for it, don’t harass a roleplayer for it. Don’t like a book? Don’t read it. Don’t like an RP blog? Again, unfollow and / or block.
  • Realize that there are more important things to tackle in life than someone else’s RP blog. The RPC is just a teeny portion of tumblr and an even teenier portion of the world as a whole. What someone else does on their blog, how they write, or how they portray a character probably doesn’t actually matter as much as you think it does. Whether or not you choose to send hate to someone, however, does matter. Don’t do it.

a few reminders because i’m tired and angry

  • fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism
  • adult women aren’t inherently creepy for being in fandom and having hobbies apart from raising babies and doing taxes
  • the vast majority of people pushing back against the worrying trend of instigating harassment over fictional characters and relationships aren’t incest supporters or pedophiles, actually
  • liking a m/f ship doesn’t make someone a dirty heterosexual invading your space
  • preferring gay ships doesn’t make you ‘’woke’’ and good
  • no one owes you a disclaimer that they are a good person who recognizes that their favorite fictional villain’s actions are evil and that they don’t condone those actions irl
  • liking a fictional villain is in no way comparable to advocating abuse/murder/genocide/etc and you’re a fucking idiot if you believe that
  • just because a woman is attracted to a fictional villain doesn’t mean she’s promoting toxic relationships or going to end up in a toxic relationship. assuming women can’t tell fiction and reality apart stinks of internalized misogyny
  • some rando’s a/b/o fanfics have none of the level of influence that popular tv shows and movies spreading propaganda have
  • no one owes you a detailed description of their traumas and mental health problems
  • abusive relationships are not the same as enemies to lovers ships
  • y’all need to chill the fuck out over people, relationships, actions and events that don’t actually exist and learn how to enjoy and discuss them like normal people
  • fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism

feel free to add more

friendly reminder to support gifmakers who are still active and creating lots of content despite the horrible treatment we get from users. i don’t know if you noticed but many of us are quiting (and rightfully so), therefore if you want your favorite gifmakers to keep creating content SUPPORT THEM BY REBLOGGING. i can’t stress this enough, tumblr is not instagram, its whole purpose is to create and share. so yeah please try to support content creators if you don’t want them to leave.
