Chris Evans, re: Steve & Bucky’s relationship in Captain America: Civil War
(via shanology)
You know what? I’m just gonna say it, I hate how all of you have been talking about Tony for the line “So was I.” in the Civil War trailer. Yes, Bucky has been Steve’s friend for much longer and if I were in Steve’s place I would probably side with Bucky over Tony, but that is not what I am here to discuss. What I am here to discuss is Tony Stark.
Do you realize what the word “friend” means to Tony? Do you? Before the Avengers Tony had only two friends, and that was Rhodey and Happy. (I’m not counting Pepper because she’s more than a friend, but if you want to, you can.) Tony has grown up very smart and very alone. His father was never there for him, he never had any friends as a child(except Rhodey), and almost everyone in his adult life has only gotten close to him for career or money purposes.
The one other person that Tony had that he probably considered a friend was Obidiah, or he at least considered him to be a father figure. And you know what that jerk did? He left Tony to die in his tower so he could make more money off of Tony’s own company. One of the only people Tony trusted was only ever using him for their own gain.
And so were a lot of other people in Tony’s life. People still are. He’s Tony Stark, genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, most people only see him as an opportunity to make more money or to advance. He’s never had the luxury to trust very many people. He’s never had the luxury to have very many friends. The word “friend” has been tainted for him, it’s been used by people to get close to him and(quite literally) tear his heart out.
So for him to call Steve his friend, a man who he hasn’t known for as long as Rhodey or Happy or Pepper, is important. It means that he trusted Steve a whole lot and he felt safe around him, enough to refer to him as something that means a great deal more to Tony than to other people.
So if you are going to say that Tony doesn’t understand Steve and Bucky’s history, or that he doesn’t understand what the word “friend” means, then I’m going to tell you that you don’t understand Tony Stark.
You get it
