You know what’s a terrible idea?
The founding fathers put it in because the majority of them believed that the “common masses” were too stupid and immoral to be trusted with deciding on the president. They believed in a natural born elite whose duty it was to lead the masses to virtue.
A lot of election issues, I think, could be solved by letting it be a direct vote of the people. Too often, the popular vote ends up not being the one elected because of the electoral college.
I, for one, am tired of being told that my vote counts and then having it end up that really, only the vote of 538 people count. Yes, my vote counts toward the whole of the state’s leaning, which then influences the elector’s votes; but let’s say the numbers are close in California. 48% of the population votes Blue, 52% votes Red. California has 55 electors. They all vote Red now because clearly the whole state is Red. See the problem here? We have had many multiple elections where, were the votes of the people used rather than the votes of the College, the other guy would have won.
It’s not 1788 anymore, the idea of natural aristocracy has been debunked and smashed for centuries now, and the people of this nation want to be heard. Not heard through a filter held by someone who is only looking at aggregate data. There’s NO reason why we shouldn’t or can’t do the presidential election by popular vote.
