The theme of this blog is 'things that are making me happy'. If you're looking for my Cats content, it's at @junkyard_gifs.I am on AO3 under the name 'whit_merule'. This is a hatred-free blog, and a safe space for your identity and for your fandom preferences. (I am a bisexual ace in my thirties, with 'she' pronouns.) Ship who you ship, love who you love, be whoever you really are as hard as you damn well can, and tag as appropriate for anything that might make others uncomfortable.

I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to have been in the queer movement for 20+ years, to have studied queer theory, to have contributed to you potentially enjoying the rights you have today because I was part of a groundswell of lobbying and direct action in the 1990s….

…to have a 15 year old who’s spent maybe 8 months being political and has never inquired about queer history anonymously message me, “EXCUSE ME QU**R IS A SLUR LMAO OMG EMBARRASSSING AN aCTUAL ADULT WHO THINKS IT’S OKAY TO USE QU**R!~!!!!”

Dude, we are a slur. Queer folks are a slur to conservative straight people. Everything we are will be used as a slur by everyone who hates us. Gay is a slur. Lesbian is a slur. People will try to use all of our words against us. Don’t fucking let them get into your head to the point at which you’re telling actual queer people not to use the words we’ve used to unite ourselves and empower ourselves for decades.

everyone is always up in arms about the morality/immorality/virtuousness/wickedness of reading/writing about certain subjects but for some reason there’s never any attention paid to the morality/immorality/virtuousness/wickedness of being responsible for your own behavior and owning your own emotions. i’m really sick of the culture on here that acts like it’s some heinous crime to expect adults capable of searching out hobbyist fictional material on the internet to also be capable of monitoring their own consumption of said material and their own internet use. you used to have to wade through endless LJ/AFF.net/fandom-specific-archive/personal-geocities-page fic descriptions on the off chance of finding that rare fic you actually wanted to read. and yeah, a lot of it was disturbing, even triggering (AFF.net was a cesspool of untagged scat, rape, abuse, necro, etc), and not written well, and in poor taste. so you didn’t read it, and if you read some of it by accident you closed the tab and went outside, because you understood that by entering your birthdate at the welcome screen you were acknowledging that you were an adult who was capable of managing their own internet activity.

now a great deal of the material global fandom has produced over the last 10 years is in ONE place, with a standardized, readable format and an extensive tagging system that is wrangled/curated by fellow fan volunteers. it’s a god damn wonderland, and if you occasionally stumble upon something that wasn’t warned ‘correctly’ (because who gets to define what is sufficient or correct? who gets to decide?), and makes you feel sick, and you suffer legitimate distress from that, maybe you should reconsider whether reading hobbyist fictional material on the internet is a good choice for you.

when did it become cool to be so helpless and victimized by the mere existence of another person’s words, which are available to you at your leisure, which have nothing to do with you? whose author does not even know you exist? it indicates a serious lack of emotional resilience and boundaries, and to take your own shit out on authors is not cool, it’s not going to help you, and all it shows is that you cannot control your own behavior enough to close your browser when you know you need to. and if you cant do that, you have a problem, and should take a break from the internet.

fanfiction is free, it takes work to make, and we publish it as a favor, because we want to share it with other interested parties. the amount of entitlement and childishness around this is really stunning, and it’s not doing anyone any favors, especially people who are using social justice language to get out of working on their own emotional issues.

Positive points about Stairway to Heaven

Since I’ve not been able to get on here much until now I’ve only really thrown in quick comments about the negative element - ie. Tessa.

But OMG I actually kind of LOVE the episode!

Can we talk about ALL THE CAS and ALL THE ANGEL PLOT and how it was AWESOME?!

Angels WANTING TO STAY ON EARTH because they have discovered they like it more than Heaven - because bowling and PHYSICALITY of human/fallen life (the smell of wood etc)! EVERYTHING I WANTED from the fallen angel plot! :D

And Cas’ team becoming independent and questioning Cas and standing up to Dean because they are thinking for themselves!

Okay, asking Cas to punish Dean by KILLING DEAN was EXTREME - surely an alternative punishment could have been negotiated? But it makes sense angels would hold an ‘eye for an eye’ sense of justice, I think, and that it will take more time for them to start thinking differently about that (and Cas knew that, which was why he didn’t try and argue, just accepted that his credibility had come down to his ability to kill Dean AND HE COULDN’T BECAUSE ‘he’s in love’ and there were FUCKING TEARS IN HIS EYES as he realised that’s what things had come down to OMG GUYS GUYS! Why was he crying? Because he was losing his army, AT THE THOUGHT OF KILLING DEAN, did the thought of killing Dean make him cry?? or was it the look in Dean’s eyes, that moment of FEAR in Dean and Cas was crying that Dean would look at him like that, could possibly think he would ever kill him?? why was he crying guys??)

Oh and Cas being ‘very pop culture savvy, now’ - SQUEE!

AND ‘ONLY THE PENITENT MAN MAY PASS’ - I was gasping and flailing THE INSTANT Sam quoted that because FAVOURITE INDIANA JONES ALERT! And they even mimicked the shot with the breeze blowing through the cobwebs that happens just before Indy figures it out and I was screaming ‘duck Cas DUCK!’ and Cas DID because he KNOWS INDIANA JONES NOW and it was super fun shut up don’t judge me! :p

Plus, oh - CAS AND SAM working together. CAS AND SAM WORKING TOGETHER.

(to add another quick negative - the annoying mother at the beginning who was berating the angel for eating the banana split felt OTT and uncalled for, I didn’t like that, although I liked the child angel).

Generally all the angels and the DEVELOPMENT the scenes with them showed were/was great imo - angels growing comfortable on Earth! Angels using casual and colloquial language, angels in ‘outreach’ programs where they are helping with ‘minor miracles.’ Was that Cas’ idea? Did he want to make sure his followers were more than soldiers?? Or did they suggest it to him? Did they want to be actively helping humanity? Either way - awesome!!

Cas and Sam talking about Dean and being concerned about him!!

Cas and Dean arguing (like a couple?) and Sam telling them to stop! :p

CAS AND DEAN’S FINAL CONVERSATION where Cas was hurting from the lack of trust/belief from his followers and Dean was 100% genuine ‘dude yes I believe you’ even though he’d been the one distrustful and doubting of Cas at the beginning, and how it was exactly what Cas needed - to know that the guy whose opinion he cares THE MOST about trusted him. AND believed in him, being confident the three of them could take down Metatron!

Not to mention how seeing Cas give up his whole army, his prestige, his rockstar status, what could be called Cas’ best shot at defeating Metatron and returning to Heaven FOR DEAN must have influenced Dean himself. How it must have really hit home the way Cas CARES ABOUT HIM, really shown Dean what he means to Cas!

(and now I’m thinking I would really love it if next episode when they are all yelling at Dean for attacking Gadreel - and wasn’t it SUPER BIG AND AMAZING OF SAM to even CONSIDER working with Gadreel and maybe even giving him at chance at redemption/forgiveness considering the violation Gadreel subjected Sam to?? - that Dean will answer something like ‘look, Cas needs juice, right? lets just take it from this guy, keep Cas alive, sounds like a fair trade to me’)

…aaaah. Yes. There was much to the good this week :)

“THESE TWO ARE CANON SHIP IT YOU HOMOPHOBE”
Thank you!
I am a gay male. Likely I’m one of the oldest users on tumblr. I’m 74. Yes, young readers seventy four. I have been with my partner Carl for 47 years now.
Please know that while we both know technology very well, we are also trying very hard to remember, and use correctly, the new dialogue that has grown. So, if any words appear here that are not considered correct…it is not because I refuse to use them. It’s because I haven’t heard them. Or seen them. Or am emotional enough while writing this that I simply use “old fart” words.
We have both been through it all. The hiding because it was illegal, the fear and pain of the loss of fifteen different friends and acquaintances from A.I.D.S. The times when you literally (not virtually) could not walk the streets without meeting someone that had a sign, or a pamphlet that declared A.I.D.S was God’s way of “ridding the earth” of homosexuality. We lived through the burning of homes, and clubs, and bars. We lived through the beating deaths. I lived through a beating that nearly lost me my right eye and left me completely deaf in the right ear. Carl lost several jobs because “he must be…” or “we know.” We lived through hatred that was terrifying and sickening and unimaginable to some today.
The hatred is still there. The overt and the subtle. Things are, however better (it’s a terrible word, I know). Carl and I married. We debated making it very public, but decided on a personal ceremony. The photos are filled with our friends who are 90 and…well…have a few pages stuck together, to new friends who are young enough to be our grandchildren.
Carl and I are in a variety of fandoms. Yes, we are trekkies-we bought our first color television just for Star Trek. Now Carl loves Supernatural (and thinks it’s gone so far down the crapper that they’ve actually made Naomi an Alien). I like Teen Wolf and we both watch Sherlock.
The opening statement made by the anon is so, so true. And to us, it is a new form of hatred. I read fanfic and write it. Carl and I both enjoy all forms of fanworks.
Here’s the kicker… Neither of us is a Sherlock/John shipper. We both see Sherlock and John as two men who have a very unique and incredibly strong friendship. Here’s the irony: I have been called a homophobe for not shipping Sherlock and John. I received hate messages in my (now deleted) Sherlock blog when I answered ‘do you ship Johnlock?’ with the single word ‘no’. It was oddly amusing: “Homophobe”, “die cis scum!”, “go kill yourself”, “you must be a lonely, fat, hag”.
When straight people go out of their way to “prove” that John and Sherlock (and other fandom characters) are gay, and do so with the cry of “if you don’t ship it, you hate gays!” It is an ironic form of hatred and, in a way, homophobia: These straight people are so determined to show that they aren’t homophobic, that they fail to see how damaging their fetishization and “look at how accepting I am!” is. That, queers can actually see a friendship between John and Sherlock (and any other fandom characters). That seeing a friendship, and not shipping John and Sherlock is simply that… Seeing a friendship.
When you demand, dear straight people, that others ship Johnlock, and demand that if you don’t “ship” you are homophobic… You are the one that is showing intolerance and hate: Your quest to prove that you’re on “our side” only proves your ignorance, your desperation to been seen as an ally, and the fact that you don’t actually see queer issues, or respect those that are queer.
You only want to see two guys have hot (or painfully bad, and painfu,l considering the how…painfully it is written the majority of the time) sex.
