No matter the differences between Washington and Canberra or personal disinterest between the respective leaders, any past prime minister could rely on any president to make the phone calls and visits look dignified and diplomatic, as befits a "special relationship".
But the new reality is that Trump and his team will throw anyone under the bus to make the new president look good. So it behooves Australian politicians not to go through the pretence, by omission or commission, that everything is hunky dory....

Everything about this exchange delights me. I feel like I’m just sitting back watching two primary school bullies whine at each other in the playground.
What’s the Australian press reaction to this? Obviously, I don’t know the ins and outs of the situation, but hasn’t there been big scandals in recent years about the conditions at detention centers?
Also, the Donald caring about how this is going to look? I guess he is a politician after all… just a vile, incompetent one.

... so, in completely unrelated news I’m mostly avoiding real press, but I’m guessing their reactions (given most of them hate Turnbull and Trump) is going to be a slightly more formal version of Tired Hilarity. ABC (our version) and the Age are the only ones worth reading, if you want to cast an eye there yourself.
