What Are You Really Afraid Of?

@whatareyoureallyafraidof / whatareyoureallyafraidof.tumblr.com

The truth is, the only people who affect the “sanctity” of your marriage are you and your spouse. The couple next door — whatever their gender composition — doesn’t change your commitment. And, couples across the street, across town, or across the country have absolutely no control over the strength and validity of your marriage! So, what are you really afraid of? I wrote this last year. It came up in my Facebook memories, so I figured I’d share it again. --------------------------------------------------- You're right. Colin Kaepernick shouldn't have remained seated, quietly listening to the anthem. He shouldn't have used the national platform his hard work and good fortune have afforded him to stand up for what he believes. He should have remained a nice, respectful kid who entertains us and doesn't make waves, because history has shown that change is made by those who whisper.

It's called freedom. He wasn't being disruptive. He wasn't standing with his fist in the air. He simply remained seated...and by doing so brought attention to an issue too many in this country are trying to ignore.

Bud of 10 years ago would've flipped out about this. And, in fact, I did write an editorial about a college student who refused to face the flag during the national anthem. I served in the United States Army. But, I've matured. I've realized that this is what freedom means. You don't have to like it, but you should support his right to protest.

And maybe...just maybe...think about what he's saying, and why he felt this was necessary.

They were. Just like they were offensive when George W. Bush was President. And, when Bill Clinton was President. And, George H.W. Bush. And, Ronald Reagan, etc. It's just that people didn't want to listen when people tried to have a reasonable debate. To discuss the issue without screaming. It took protests, and things like Charlottesville, and Colin Kaepernick, and a hundred other marches and actions to get people thinking, "Hey, maybe this is about more than just some guy kneeling during the National Anthem." Sadly, the world isn't changed by people who whisper. It's too easy to ignore when people try to be reasonable.
