So I hate doing this, but I haven't been able to work in a month for a variety of reasons, and I've hit the point where I'm about to run out of savings. I'm hoping I'll be able to start work soon, but I'm also looking to move in a couple months and could really use some extra funds.

So just like, $500? I know everyone is hurting and there's others who need help too, but any amount would help. $500 will get me to a comfortable place to where I can hold out a little longer before I start earning a paycheck again. Once I hit 500, I'll delete this post, promise.

If you like, since I'm a folklorist, I can do a folktale/legend retelling, or tell you about your favorite folk creature or cryptid if you donate. Up to you.

(I do have some n*des I'm willing to sell but DM me for that)

I appreciate it

So I just got word that the contracting firm I work for won't have a project to send me to until May at the earliest!

I'm working on applying to other jobs so I can actually make money, and I've signed up to be a doordash driver, but I would really appreciate a little extra help. Actually having money in my account would help me out a lot, especially mentally speaking. Literally any amount would help, I know we're all hurting right now

Previous offers mentioned before still stand. Shit, at this point I'd be willing to give you a knife I've made

I have already been rejected for a cashier job at Target! It hasn't even been 24 hours since I applied! I have years of experience as a cashier but it's fine I guess! This is how my job search went for most of last year, I applied to multiple jobs a week from September 2021 to January 2022 and got 1 interview. Which lead to the position I'm in now.

People claim there's a labor shortage because no one wants to work, but when people actually apply they go "no, not you. We just wanna complain."

Needless to say I could still really use the help, and I'm adding in a picture of myself so folks'll know this is legit.

Please help. On top of it all this entire situation is making me really goddamn depressed

$92/500

Update 3/11/22: I've applied to 11 jobs already this week and have heard back from 3.

Target, which rejected my application within 24 hours;

A test scoring job, which could guarantee 2 weeks of work at least, 8 at the most, and sounded like a scam at worst, hell for my ADHD at best;

And Five Guys, just now, via an automated system to schedule me for an interview. So I have an interview!

The trouble is because of my CRM job (aka archaeology contract work) I can guarantee working almost full time until April, but come May I cant guarantee how many hours I can work and how short a notice I can give before leaving for site, especially as were entering the busy field season, and that is what is causing a lot of people to not want to consider me. Why hire someone that won't be able to guarantee they can come in for weeks at a time, instead of someone who can reliably provide you a schedule and will come in to work, guaranteed? Plus I try to make monthly trips to Ohio to see my boyfriend, which is something we both need mentally speaking. Companies advertise flexible scheduling, but would rather not use it if they don't have to.

I get it. It sucks, but I get it.

I really appreciate everyone who has donated to me so far. This entire thing has essentially spiked me from hypomania directly into a depressive episode and you all have really helped a lot of keeping my spirits somewhat up and giving me a cushion in all of this.

Please know that if you've donated to me my appreciation of you knows no bounds.

$157/500

Update 3/14/22: The one interview I managed to get, out of 14 job applications, was just cancelled 🙃 with no way for me to reschedule it. The job market is great right now guys, I am loving this so much. I'm having a great time.

$157/500

Since it's been asked, I do have a C*shapp as well!

If that's what you prefer, you can find me as $hobsrunt

the thing about the mummy movies is that you really spend most of the time thinking "wow brendan fraser's character is so cool" or "man oded fehr is so mysterious and heroic" when the fact of the matter is that these two

are the absolute most batshit insane heroes in the entire franchise

these two are intellectual loner siblings with archeology backgrounds who read and speak ancient egyptian, hire a dude directly out of prison to take them to a lost city of gold, and fight mummies literally with their bare hands. twice.

no one in these movies stands a chance against the carnahans. frankly they're lethal in how willing they are to make the absolute and most undeniably deranged decisions. jonathan pickpockets a dude on fire. evy's resurrected from the dead and immediately remembers how to use sai. they're racking shotguns from a cliff in this scene and then proceed to blow away half the antagonists.

rick and ardeth should be so lucky

i’m actually scared that food safety is going to get so much worse. of course i expected that it would stay bad - since it’s been basically unchanged for the last four years. but now, we gotta worry that it’s going to get more privatized and lax all over again. people shouldn’t have to live in fear that their food could make them sick or kill them. people shouldn’t lose access to their main sources of food because of an illness outbreak.

tagging on to this - in addition to recommending everyone watch out for meat products because of listeria, i'm also going to recommend maybe you start avoiding fresh/uncooked leafy greens, especially in spring and summer, especially in bagged salads. this past year I got a very bad case of cyclospora, a protozoan parasite, which was most likely from fresh produce, and which may have been part of a wider outbreak as there were cases elsewhere in my state around the same time. cyclospora and other protozoan illnesses have been drastically rising in the US over the past several years, up from a few hundred cases per year a decade ago versus several thousand per year now, likely due to farms depending on migrant workers and not providing them with adequate bathrooms/sanitation facilities, leading to fecal contamination of crops or irrigation water (which is how these illnesses spread) - historically, cyclospora was not endemic to the US food supply and was only found on imports or in people who had traveled recently, but that has been changing as more and more cases appear to be spreading domestically.

now, to the safety PSA: simply washing your fruits and vegetables will not fully remove protozoan parasites. it will help, but in order to truly protect yourself, you need to peel them or blanch them in boiling water in order to render them safe. cases usually peak during warm weather, when less of your food is coming from greenhouses and more is coming from fields - be especially careful during that time, and consider growing your own produce if you can.

to underscore how bad this infection is, I was not able to pass any solid stool for over a month when I had it - it resulted in severe, continuous, unrelenting diarrhea, rapid weight loss (I lost around 10% of my body weight during that time), chronic dehydration, and profound fatigue/malaise. you do not want this infection. if I already had other health problems, this infection would have hospitalized me for sure - I barely stayed out of the hospital as it was. cook your food.

Shana Tova!!! May your enemies, haters, and those who wish evil upon you be cut off. The blessing for the leek has always felt resonant but this year it's been on my mind a lot. For me at least, 5785 is a year of practicing healthy boundaries and taking care of myself - even if I have to run on spite. I hope everyone has a safe Rosh Hashanah ❤️

this is a beautiful piece of rosh hashanah art that is receiving antisemitic backlash due to ignorant misinterpretation. it would be nice if my followers could show op some love.

Listen, I know, you all have been seeing fundraiser posts all day long. I've seen people complain that the tags for Palestine are "unusable" now because… genocide victims use it to find aid to survive.

Thing is, those posts will be here until Israel ceases it's aggression. And Palestinians will need your aid as far as they are left with no income and besieged. I've tried reaching out to other platforms, and Tumblr is still the best place for at least Falastin (Gazan who I spotlight for more than 2 months) to get donations; because here you don't need thousands of followers to get interactions. And at least we get one in ten response here; on other platforms both of us don't get any.

So yes, a dying website for fandom is her best bet to save her family right now. We don't speak of evacuation anymore (even though we hope for it), this is a battle for day-to-day survival. The prices in Gaza are increasing every hour, and they have no income and Falastin has gone into multiple debts to help them before starting the campaign in June. And yes, she receives more attention now but her family is still in starvation - she tries to support 26 people now, since her cousin was martyred and his 2 children joined 24 of her family in Al-Mawasy.

Yes, they should get free aid from all those countless non-profits that raise millions. But if they see something labelled as "aid" it is because they have bought it themselves. Yes, you can see (and maybe touch!) aid if you subject yourself to hours-long queues and/or humiliation of being a part of a photoshoot. They also said that the aid they get is stale at best and spoiled at worst; and that's again, if they get it.

Yes, there are grassroots organizations but they cannot reach everyone, because they are in small teams and they don't receive a lot of funds. And you can of course donate to them to try "fix" this; but please do not think that it means individual fundraisers are not worth supporting. I did not see any evidence of individual fundraisers "taking" money from others; on the contrary, when Falastin's fundraiser struggles, I see others struggle too. When we celebrate a good day of donations we celebrate it with others too.

And I could talk about Harris campaign get 1 billion in donations and still receiving them or how AO3 got 200k in a couple of days; but the post is getting too long.

Anyway. Please consider donating to Falastin's campaign; the money would buy food and water first, shelter and clothes for the winter second. There's a raffle for hand-made Palestinian thobe that Falastin's friend makes (LINK); and please follow her here.

Donate via Gofundme (in SEK! check rates below please): LINK

  • 10$ = 108 SEK
  • 25$ = 272 SEK
  • 50$ = 544 SEK
  • 100$ = 1,088 SEK

Donate via PayPal (in USD): LINK

Vetting info: #282 in El-Shab-Hussein and Nabulsi's spreadsheet [here], #957 in the Butterfly Project spreadsheet [here]

Sorry to ask you again to share but please do. If you want, you can reblog Falastin's post or any other about her, just please share something about her because she relies on you all. Thank you and please dm if you want to be removed.

Since we're getting into "did you know that Santa's eight tiny reindeer are a reference to the eight legs of Odin's steed?" season once again, remember: while there are some elements of Christmas (or Hallowe'en, or Easter, or...) observations that are probably pre-Christian in origin, before one believes any of that this-is-really-100%-just-a-Pagan-holiday-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off stuff, one must consider all of the following possibilities:

  1. Our earliest known records of the cited pre-Christian practices were written down by some random Christian monk centuries after the fact, and we genuinely have no idea how accurate this account is, to what extent the apparent similarities with Christian practice are due to the author deliberately or unwittingly putting a Christian spin on it, or indeed, whether they were just making shit up.
  2. The similarities between the two sets of practices have been exaggerated or misrepresented by Christian writers who were bent for prefiguration theology (i.e., the idea that the Bible echoes backwards in time and pre-Christian religious practices were unwittingly imitating future Christian practices).
  3. The similarities between the two sets of practices have been exaggerated or misrepresented by Protestant writers who believe that all Pagan deities are Satan in disguise, so they think that if they can prove that Catholic practices are secretly Pagan in origin, that proves that Catholics are secretly Satanists.
  4. The similarities between the two sets of practices have been exaggerated or misrepresented by overzealous mythographers trying to prove that all mythology and religion throughout all of human history is secretly a single unified monomyth; if it's pre-Victorian, expect shades of prefiguration theology, while if it's post-Victorian, expect a lot of stuff about the Collective Unconscious.
  5. A bunch of 19th Century proto-Fascists were trying to construct a pre-Jewish cultural identity (and considered Christianity to be tainted by association), but didn't want to give up any of the fun rituals, so they made some shit up about how it was still okay to do Christmas because something something Odin, or whatever.
  6. A bunch of early 20th Century Pagan reconstructionists filled in the gaps in their understanding of pre-Christian ritual with culturally Christian assumptions, then turned around and pointed at their own accidentally Christianised reconstructions as evidence that Christian practices are derived from them.
  7. A bunch of late 20th Century self-help manual authors tried to break into the occult bookstore market by uncritically repeating any or all of the above.
  8. Someone on the Internet just made it up.

it's always "you gnawed off your own leg to escape like an animal caught in a trap" and never "why didn't anyone try to help you out of the trap" or "why weren't you provided with any other resources to escape the trap with except for your own teeth"
