You got an ask regarding leaving negative comments. Your response was great, but I wanted to add something.

Anon's objection was that they were disappointed by the end. While I definitely being disappointed, trust me, this is actually an opinion. Even when someone asks for feedback, opinions should be delivered carefully. I have beta read here and there, and been in a few critique groups IRL. This sometimes means reading stories where the author took a direction I hadn't seen coming. If I feel a smoother landing was needed, I give my two cents. If it wasn't my kind of twist or ending, I stay silent, because that's not really the point.

Likewise, I'm sure my writing's disappointed people who were hoping for a different story. It happens.

tl;dr: If you weren't asked for feedback, don't give it. If you were, base your feedback on what the author was trying to say (or what you think they were trying to say), not on what you wish they had said.

this is a great point on a writer's intention and direction and a helpful insight on why respecting that is important. i didn't have anything to add other than to say thank you for sharing!

likewise, i wanted to say thank you for the perspectives shared on the previous post - i'll close this topic off with a happy reading and happy writing to everyone involved!

Hey Lola :)

I can't speak for everyone, but when it comes to knowing what to post for tag games, please just share what you're happiest with. Everyone will be happy to read it, regardless of fandom <3

thank you, this is so kind!

it's a weird thing writing for 3 fandoms at once because I feel a strange mix of guilt and fear for not posting particular things, like people are gonna forget me or disengage because I'm posting about something they don't care about 😂 I know it's stupid, but sometimes I'm not very rational (a fact everyone knows by now).

I love posting lone star on here and I feel like I'm not as deep in the rwrb fandom (tgm even less), but there's bits of my heart stashed away in those characters too, and sometimes I just wanna yell about them!

anyway! I have a lot of eurotrip content saved up so I guess that's a positive - I haven't given the whole fic away. it's been a very strange experience writing it over 2.5 years and only really sharing it with 2 other people. there are times when I wonder whether it will ever see the light of day, but it's becoming increasingly likely since I've gotten over the halfway mark. I've estimated about 89k to go which sounds like a lot but when you've already got 113k, it seems strangely manageable 😂

okay i have to ask - what are your best tips for writing sexual tension? i’m struggling with it in this fic i’m writing - it almost feels forced? idk what i’m missing

hi anon!

sorry this took me a while to get to - i had to think for a bit about this one. also sorry it's super long. also thanks to @rmd-writes for letting me bounce some ideas and giving me your own!

i've come to the conclusion that i think writing sexual tension goes far beyond the actual sex scene/intimacy scene itself. i think the thing that makes sexual tension feel believable is the build up - every interaction the characters have prior to the actual 'getting together' scene. it's in their dialogue, it's in their thoughts when they stray to each other, it's in the little things they accidentally let slip in conversations to side characters. those are the things that really help culminate in a very sexy scene.

utilise dialogue and non-verbal cues. i know this is a very cheap shot because i'm a lover of dialogue in general, but characters who feel a type of way about each other are going to act differently together than they do around other side characters. try to build in character-appropriate dialogue, for example: awkward, nervous conversation OR confident flirting OR suggestive, leading sentences (this will depend on the characters, obviously). you can do this both in WHAT the characters say, and in HOW they say it. I.e. dialogue tags can be really helpful here. if a character is flirting, perhaps they wink. if they're awkward, maybe they blush. maybe their sentences trail off. maybe they hold each other's gaze for a fraction too long. maybe they lean in closer? go wild. don't forget the small details too - you want the characters to notice things about each other. the colour of eyes, the curve of their lips, the way their fingers curl around a glass etc. FURTHER, i would add that dialogue in sex scenes is (in my biased opinion) very sexy, and a great way to keep the scene moving. just the right amount of 'you like that, baby?' or 'just like that' or lingering eye contact with a 'sweetheart' on a breath etc. etc. can not only make the scene 10 times hotter but also work in great communication.

don't rush. this goes with the dialogue aspect, but letting sexual tension build is really important and depends on where the characters start (enemies to lovers is generally going to take longer than a PWP one night stand). Over multiple interactions, the characters can start to appreciate different things about each other, which lends itself to showing the reader attraction. This can even work in short fics. For example, if two characters meet at a bar, perhaps you can work in a scene which cuts through multiple hours - one character looking at the other and noticing how they look on the dance floor, then laughing with their friends, then skimming their fingers over a glass at the bar, then flirting with the bartender. In each of those instances, the observing character can notice something new and more intense about the character in question. it builds believability and tension.

in sex scenes, use sensory details. aside from the use of dialogue in sex scenes, another thing which i think is incredibly useful in building tension is paying attention to the senses. describing what a character hears: the frantic beating of a heartbeat, a gasp, laboured breathing. the feeling of their fingertips on the other characters skin, how their hands feel threaded through the other's hair. the smell of the other character's cologne/perfume or the salty taste of sweat on their skin. all of these things are super important, build tension and further add to the sexiness of a scene.

stay in character. i think it's important when building tension to make sure the characterisation stays consistent. you do want the characters to ultimately be attracted to the real version of each other. as comfort levels grow, so might flirty banter, sarcastic or witty comments, laughing with each other, friendly touching. depending on the type of story, i would aim to build attraction by having the characters slowly reveal parts of themselves to the other, because it adds to the growing togetherness, but also keeps them consistent.

i hope these are helpful! thanks for sending me this ask, i love answering asks like this!

Come finish this 4x18 coda for me. 🥺 I will apparently do anything, but write.

FRIEND! I have to respectfully decline this request, on the basis that your snippets are delectable and I wouldn't want to ruin the amazing work you've done so far!

I believe in you!!!! My writing has also hit a bit of a wall lately but I'm really hoping to pick it back up next week - if we make a pinky promise over the internet do you think it's binding? because I'll work on my WIP if you will!!!

Flailing for you on the sidelines!!!

okay but hear me out...what if i just turned all those title asks into snippets. what if i did that? what if i wrote a whole ass fic? i think i could comfortably say that it's the fandom's fault. gonna blame all of you <3

It would be so amazing if you were to ever write a SC fic!! 😭

nonnie, no one would be happier than I! I want to but I feel that I haven't been gripped by the requisite hyperfixation! I really love the show though, I've only watched it all the way through once so maybe I need to do a complete rewatch?

Howe do you get the characterisation of the characters you write about soo well? Like legit was reading the ring in (again) and that was a huge take away I got. Like “man, this IS Carlos and TK” same with your firstprince fics. What’s your secret? 👀

Hey, anon. This was super nice and very unexpected, so thank you for making my night <3

Truthfully, I can't articulate this well, so I'm sorry if it seems a bit scattered. A lot of my characterisation comes from me scheming up scenes in the shower, literally zoning out and thinking of dialogue as if the characters are being acted out in front of me. I do have some tips that work for me (and I hope are helpful for you!) which I've put below. Please feel free to let me know if you need further clarification!

Also, if anyone else has any tips, feel free to contribute. I'd love to hear them :)

TIP 1: For Lone Star (or any visual media - TV/movies), I'd spend a LOT of time re-watching the scenes, observing character's mannerisms and trying to replicate that in and amongst the dialogue (you don't even want to KNOW how many times I've watched Tarlos compilations - it's sickening). I think a LOT can be achieved with visual cues - for example, TK loves that sassy hand he whips out every now and again - and I'll try and build those things in with my dialogue. THIS IS ALSO WHERE GIF MAKERS ARE SO AMAZING, because GIFs provide snippets of scenes which allow writers to really hone in on a character's micro expressions. Carlos loves to raise an eyebrow, for example. I think these little details can go a long way.

TIP 2: It helps to build in familiar phrases. I love a canon callback (as long as it fits within the scene) and I think they can be super useful in adding extra authenticity. For example, one I used recently was Alex's "cool to see you're not dead or anything." It's a canon line, which can be easily applied to a different context. It just adds that extra flair, because you KNOW that the character would say that. I would just caution you to use them sparingly, so they pack that extra punch.

TIP 3: Read widely in the fandom! I think it helps to get a really good understanding of how characters behave by developing your own sense of what is in character. If you really vibe with how an author is portraying a character, make note of why you feel that way and try and apply it (obviously without plagiarism) in your own way.

TIP 4: Ask for (gentle and constructive) feedback from people you trust, if you feel comfortable enough to do so. I am FOREVER grateful to some of the people I've met in fandom who have been able to guide me with sensing what is/isn't out of character. It doesn't even need to be a full beta read. It could be quite simply: 'hey, do you think X would do this?'. Don't be afraid to reach out! I am so open to helping people with this and I know a lot of other people are too.

TIP 5: This might be a bit weird, but I do this because I am not an American and I write for a lot of American media - I spend a lot of time trying to visualise how a certain character would say something in their accent. It's taken me a long time to learn certain Americanisms and I'm sure I still get a lot of them wrong, but sometimes I literally close my eyes and try and imagine Ronen saying a line I've written, in his accent.

TIP 6: Keep writing the characters!!! The more you do it, the better you will get. I'm even looking back at some writing I did in early 2022 and trying to fix a bit of my characterisation, which just shows how much it has changed even in 1.5 years!

Best of luck and thank you so much for being so kind. I hope these are helpful!

I’m sorry if you’ve answered this already but are you planning to post ATLA? and do you have an ETA on that if you are (no pressure, I love your writing and the story seemed really interesting)

OKAY I ACTUALLY HAVE AN UPDATE ON THIS LISTEN UP EVERYONE (AKA. THE THREE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO KNOW):

ALTA has been a liiiiittle bit of a saga (would you believe me if I said I finished it in APRIL 😭🔪 ) but there have been major, major changes made to it since (I had to swap two characters and add more scenes and do a whole lot of clarifying shit and fill plot holes and I feel like I'm writing an actual book at this point).

That being said, I've scheduled a drop dead date on it for in October 2023, so...whatever state it is in on that date, chapter 1 is going out 💀

Thank you so much for the ask. I feel like I had to commit to a date, and now I have.

To be honest, I have become so disillusioned with this fic over time because of my fluctuating feelings towards writing and fandom and the mental health roller-coaster I've been on pretty much all year (I have been UNWELL I'm just gonna say it, and there have been some changes to the therapy I'm receiving that have impacted my creativity, but I think I'm coming out of my deep dark hole finally!!) also I've sort of carved out some really amazing group chats and one on one convos with other people that have sustained me. I've really enjoyed getting to know people better, and I don't even think they necessarily know how important they are to me and my happiness, but they are 💜

anyway, that was a question about alta, and I made it into a love letter to my people, but you know... the people get me through!

and also I love talking to new people so if you ever want to shoot me a dm PLEASE DO I love making friends!

it's not weird at all, i think. i don't write but as a viewer i tend to stay away form actors too so my perception of the characters doesn't change. like, i've been in fandoms where some actor was a jerk irl and i ended up not being able to watch anymore without despising the character too... in tarlos' case, i am happy they get on well and they're obviously very attractive and who wouldn't enjoy THAT but i rather stay away for my own good!

ouch I know that feeling so hard! I'm impressed by your dedication anon - sometimes I can't help but get attached, but I feel like my desire to improve as a writer is a very strong motivation to stay away (mostly) hehe.
