The Stakeout - POSTED

From the moment I watched the chaos and hilarity of Iris and TK's dynamic in 4x02, I knew I must write a situation that would make Carlos question all his life choices and here we are. I also love watching Carlos spiral so this is set with the interpretation that Gabriel's killer is never found.

This is set ten years into the future where TK and Carlos' 10 year wedding anniversary is coming up. I hope you enjoy it!

Carlos believes Owen is sleeping with his mom and has a lot of feelings about it. TK (and his partner in crime) are there to help... sort of.

TK smiles at Carlos as he slides the front door shut with his foot. His chin rests in his palm, mirroring Iris across the table.

“What are you two giggling about?” Carlos asks, carrying a heavy fish tank into the loft from where he’d retrieved it in the garage. “Should I be worried?”

Iris grins. “Had any car troubles lately?”

“I was just telling Iris about the little problem you had this morning,” TK says.

“Excuse me?”

“The car problem,” TK clarifies.

“It wasn’t a problem, besides I fixed it.”

“Oh, you fixed a problem you didn’t have?” Iris asks. The windshield wipers snapped off the Camaro this morning on the freeway in a bought of biblical rain whilst Carlos was driving to work. It was definitely a problem. “You’ve had that car since graduation, it’s old, it’s had its time. Maybe you could sell it and put the money towards your big anniversary.”

“Okay, you two have been talking too much.” Carlos looks at him accusatory. TK pleads innocence with his eyes, Carlos isn’t green to this and not so easily fooled anymore. “I don’t need to sell my car because we agreed we’re keeping the celebrations small.”

“You can admit you’re having car problems; we’ve all been there.”

“Not me,” Carlos brushes Iris off with a charming smile and gestures to the tank he’d placed on the table in front of them. “Is this the one you wanted?”

“Yes,” TK smiles. “Thank you, baby,”

Iris admires Lou 2’s old tank. “It’s perfect.”

TK’s second winter in Antarctica starts the same as the first—short days, cold nights, and a never-ending work load. Except when Carlos returns part way through the season after a sudden departure last year, TK has to learn to cope with being in the most remote place on Earth with the man he used to warm up with nearly every night. An expedition for emergency maintenance throws them together again, but when they become part of the emergency, they’re forced to face their pasts.

A week away with their friends sounds like the perfect escape after the fire, the firehouse closure, and a month of uncertainty. What’s supposed to be a relaxing getaway quickly becomes anything but when Carlos starts noticing odd patterns and inconsistencies that make him question if the fire has left him paranoid, or if there’s something more to the story than the resort is letting on.

Carlos bounces out of the hanger coltishly, his limbs loose as jelly, heading in the vague direction towards which the T.S.A. agent wafted an arm. It takes him a hideous moment to clock TK, alone inside an expanding circle made of fellow first responders and passengers wearing shock blankets, bewildered and milling around. There he is – directly in the sunshine, glowing gold and alive. Carlos stops because the sight of him takes his breath. His heartbeat pounds in his ears. He doesn’t even feel himself launch into a run, but the warm air thumps against him as he moves faster than he has ever moved – his limbs firm now, muscles powerful, carrying him to the center of his world. Carlos runs, and as he runs the heartbeat in his ears changes to words. He hears his voice and he hears TK’s, whooshing in the wind.

Hey, wanna dance?

Yeah.

TK Strand hasn’t known Carlos Reyes for very long. He’s slept with him, run out on his attempt at getting to know him better, and been processed by him after an arrest. Despite all of that, TK can’t get over Carlos. He can’t get over the connection between them, the way he feels so desperately drawn to him. When TK gets bad news at an NA meeting, he quickly starts to spiral, and there’s only one person he feels safe enough to run to.
