Traintober 2024: Day 31 - Dusk

Tidmouth Train to Hell:

Pip and Emma stared at the timetable, not quite sure what to make of it. “Why is there a massive gap?” Pip finally said, still trying to wrap her head around the odd space from dusk until the next day. “Oh, that’s a Halloween tradition,” replied Bear, looking over from his own train. “Every Halloween they put us all away early for some reason. Never quite understood why, but each to their own and all that!” Pip scoffed, while Emma looked more bemused than anything.

The High-Speed diesels were still new to Sodor, and had only been once before, on trial during the summer period. This was their first October on the Island of Sodor, and all month they’d been amazed to find that the engines were far more interested in the holiday and its various traditions than the mainland was. Particularly, it was extremely popular amongst the native Sudrian people, who had been performing several rituals and festivals since the start of the month.

Emma had been far more curious about the whole thing than her sister, and decided to ask one of the older engines, in hope of getting some information. “Well,” hummed Percy, “it’s a Gaelic thing. Sauin, I believe the Sudrians call it. It’s like Samhain up in Scotland, and is all about the end of the harvest season. I remember how much Sir Topham the First put emphasis on listening to the local Sudrians about how important the rituals and festivals were. For example, at the start of the month is the cleansing ritual; it’s a bit like a spring clean, but in autumn. It used to be when the men would go out and start chopping wood for winter according to Edward.” At that moment, the signal clunked up to show green, and Percy puffed away.

Pip snorted from her end of the train. “Asking about all these silly holidays again?” she asked. “They’re not silly!” protested Emma. “They’re—” “An excuse to get more days off work,” finished Pip crossly. “Now come on, we’ve got a train to pull.”

Pip and Emma ran the WildNorWester express to London, stopping only at Crovan’s Gate, Barrow and Preston. It meant the two were often the most out of the loop on all the important gossip of the railway, as they were over on the mainland and missed it. One such titbit of gossip the pair missed was the track repairs being done at Crovan’s Gate. On their return run a week later, Pip and Emma were stopped at the platform to wait while several old signals and a set of points were replaced.

Their repair shed had recently been completed and stood on one side of the line while the narrow gauge railway sat on the other, the mainline trapped between the two and the Works. Pip and Emma had been switched onto the wrong side of the line to avoid a massive section of missing track. This put Emma right next to the Skarloey Railway sheds, where Duke was resting. “Excuse me,” Emma called. “You’ve been on Sodor for a long time, Duke – do you know much about Sau---een?” “Sauin,” corrected Duke kindly. “And I certainly do. My old line used to run through the heart of old Sodor, so I learnt all about it.” “Not this again!” groaned Pip from the other end of the train. Duke and Emma ignored her.

“Sauin is a festival to celebrate the end of the harvest, the start of the winter season… and the point in time when the barrier between our world and the Otherworld is at its weakest. The month begins by preparing for winter and giving thanks to the sun, before pivoting to asking for protection from the winter gods and giving sacrifices to the ancestors as thanks for their guidance. Then, it ends with Sauin itself, which is better known as Halloween. People celebrate the wicked and supernatural, then stay indoors overnight with scriptures for protection painted on the doorway to ward off evil spirits. It’s said they begin to break out of the Otherworld at Dusk, and party in our world until midnight…” Duke broke off, looking contemplative. Emma wasn’t sure why, but she felt uneasy all of a sudden.

A group of people walked along the platform, offering blessings to the stranded passengers and burning incense. Pip refused to be blessed, and then the group made their way over to Emma and Duke.

“Ah, if you wouldn’t mind,” Duke said. A man stepped forward, painting a sigil on Duke’s forehead in red paint before waving the incense around him. Duke smiled warmly, his old eyes closing as he relaxed while the ritual was performed.

“Oooh, can you do me next please!” asked Emma. The group nodded. “Of course we can,” one said. “Explain it to Emma while you do,” Duke added. “She’s new, and this is her first Sauin.” The man stepped forwards, dipping his thumb in some more paint.

“Alright then Emma, I’m going to paint a sigil for protection on your forehead in Ancient Sudric, and then we’ll bless you with the incense.” A few of the more curious tourists wandered over to watch, intrigued by the ritual. The man painted the sigil in careful strokes on Emma’s forehead, and then several of the others walked around her as much as they could, waving the incense over her radiator grills and wheels.

“Thank you!” said Emma happily when they finished. “I… I actually feel better already.” “You should,” hummed Duke. “It’s a popular Ancient Sudrian tradition to get blessed prior to Sauin night – just in case you’re caught out after dusk.”

Pip just rolled her eyes down at her end of the train.

Emma asked a few more questions while they waited, before finally deciding to broach a topic she’d been unsure of since she’d begun asking around about Sauin. “Why is the timetable completely empty on Sauin night?” she asked. Duke frowned. “I said everyone stays inside, so why would anyone want to take the train?” “What about tourists, or goods?” quizzed Emma. “This is Sodor – there’s always another reason.” “You’re… not wrong,” sighed Duke. “Every Halloween, a train runs from the Rolling Bridge to Tidmouth. It’s on no timetable, and has no schedule. Some engines assert it leaves at dusk, while others suggest it crosses the island in the blink of an eye. What is known about this train is that it arrives at Tidmouth at exactly midnight… and continues on through the buffers.” “Through the buffers?!” squeaked Emma. “What, do they crash the train on purpose?” “Oh no,” sighed Duke. “It’s a train to the Otherworld – though some of the workers call it the ‘Tidmouth Train to Hell’. It’s pure black from one end to the other, and absolutely no one is allowed to set eyes on it.”

“What happens if someone does?” asked Emma, spooked. Duke sighed. “Well – a man was walking along the line in ’37 when he saw it. He was found a gibbering wreck on the trackside, white as a ghost and shivering like mad. He spent the rest of his life in a mental asylum, poor chap.”

Emma winced; at that moment, the signal turned green, and the two High-Speed twins were cleared to go. The passengers hurried back aboard, and the twins set off.

“It’s poppycock,” sniffed Pip as they rocketed along. “Ooooo, be afraid of ‘The Tidmouth Train to Hell’. Duke’s trying to have you on. I bet if you ask a sensible engine like Henry or Gordon they’ll tell you it never happened!”

Pip was proven very wrong. Emma decided to ask the pair that very night, and to Pip’s surprise they immediately confirmed Duke’s story.

“Oh, old Jefferies,” hummed Gordon. “Duke told you about him? I’m surprised he didn’t use one of the earlier cases – when I arrived, people still didn’t believe in it, and we’d find three or four every Halloween stumbling about the line screaming and gibbering and acting like lunatics. I remember very vividly Glynn going down the line and picking them all up in a compartment coach so they could be kept separate and brought to the hospital safely. By the end of the 20s, every had learnt better than to be out on Halloween. Sir Topham always ensured that we were in our sheds on that night too, and his son and grandson have both followed his example.”

Pip and Emma were both stunned!

“So… it’s real?” asked Emma slowly. “It’s very real,” Henry said grimly. “I’ve seen a peek of it through the shed windows. It’s a frightening thing, let me tell you! All black, with great red headlamps and it’s puffs sound like screams. We all stay in here and tell ghost stories and try not to think about it. And I’d suggest you do the same – I know you’ve got the last train of the day. Do not be late getting here.”

Emma agreed that she definitely was going to be on time, and even Pip seemed nervous.

The week went by, and the two new engines watched as more and more Sauin festivals were held. These were less and less about the harvest, and more and more about the oncoming winter and the spirits. A number of the native Sudrians and older engines began to have protection sigils painted on their foreheads when they went out; Duke was joined by Skarloey, Rheneas, Thomas, Edward, Henry and Gordon within a few days. Donald and Douglas, who’d learnt about Samhain back in Scotland, had their own sigils written in Scottish Gaelic. Duck and Oliver got their own Scottish sigils written in support of their friends.

All around them, Pip and Emma watched as Sodor prepared for Sauin night. Hotels filled to capacity, with large parades held celebrating the spirits in several of the bigger towns and cities.

And then finally, Halloween came. The day was incredibly slow, with barely any passengers at all riding with the railway. Pip and Emma wondered if it was worth pulling their train at all – at least, until they set out on their last express of the day. It was packed.

“Why are there so many?!” exclaimed Emma. “We’re going to be barely able to hold them all!” “It’s everyone heading to the mainland to avoid Sauin night,” James said, puffing in. “You’ll be hard pressed with this many – I think it’s cause there was a fog warning put out earlier; no one wants to be caught out past dusk with that in place. Spirits and fog? No thank you!”

James steamed away to shunt his coaches into their siding, while Pip and Emma prepared to head off. It was a struggle setting off. Every single seat was filled, and a number of others stood in the corridors, making the trip extremely difficult. Even more piled on at Crovan’s Gate, where almost all the Skarloey engines had already been hidden away in their shed. Emma watched the slowly descending sun with worry.

“If we get held up on the mainland even once, we’re not going to be back for dusk,” she fretted. “We’ll be fine,” replied Pip. “Worst comes to worst, we’re a little late. ‘The Tidmouth Train to Hell’ isn’t a threat to us.”

Oh how wrong Pip was.

The big sheds at Tidmouth were filling to capacity rapidly. The usual crowd had filed in, as had Edward, BoCo, Thomas, Percy, Toby and Daisy. The sheds were so full that the tank engines had to share a road between two of them; Duck and Oliver on one line and Percy and Toby on another. The scripts had been painted on the doors, and the storm shutters rolled down on the windows. Daisy huffed grumpily, glaring out at the yards as thick fog and mist wafted in. “I hate having to spend the night here, it’s so bad for my swerves!” “Oh belt up!” groaned Thomas. “It’s better than being out there – no one wants to be out there.” “Speaking of out there, where are Pip and Emma?” asked Gordon. “Dusk is in half an hour, and they aren’t back.”

Edward, sat on the turntable, winced. “I heard they had a full train leaving Tidmouth. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve been waylaid. Let’s just hope the stationmaster at Barrow parks them there for the night.”

Pip and Emma would have no such luck. The pair were late leaving London and Preston, filled up once again with people wanting to get home for the holiday – but the platform at Barrow was deserted. The fog had truly begun to set in, leaving long shadows where none should be.

“You can’t stay here,” the stationmaster said grumpily. The sun was beginning to sink over the horizon. “There’s no space, and you’re not a Northern engine anyway. Go back to Sodor.”

Pip and Emma both tried to argue – but it was no use. At least the lack of passengers meant they didn’t need to wait around. The pair roared out of Barrow, trying their best to claw back time from the setting sun. Dusk was coming fast: too fast. The fog was willing it on faster, thick cloud cover blocking out part of the sun and making it increasingly harder to see.

Vicarstown flew by, followed by Henry’s tunnel and then Crovan’s Gate. Clear signals guided them through each station, the two honking their horns loudly. It was almost as if they were heralding the dusk, trying their best to make it back home before night came. Dark figures watched their progress from deep in the shadows, hiding where neither twin could really see them. “Faster Pip, faster!” called Emma. “I’m giving it all I can!” called back Pip.

Finally, Tidmouth came into view, one door still rolled up for them. Pip and Emma were quick to back through it, the door slamming down behind them just as the last rays of the sun vanished over the horizon, leaving behind only the fog.

“Cutting it close there,” said Gordon darkly. Both Pip and Emma winced. “We were held up on the mainland… a lot. And then the stationmaster at Barrow wouldn’t let us stay there.”

Gordon huffed. “Stupid man – he’s got no sense. Why, the other day!—”

He was cut off by James shushing him. The two shot glares at each other, before allowing Edward to pick up his story again.

The old engine wove stories throughout the next few hours, telling tales of twisted grins and haunting ghouls heralded by owls, of spirits sent to help and those sent to destroy. The engines relaxed, enjoying the night even as the hours ticked on. Pip and Emma could have fooled themselves into thinking it was just another horrible storm trapping all the engines in the shed.

That is, until a most horrific sound pierced through the air, shattering Edward’s story and leaving all the engines deathly silent. The clock showed a minute to midnight. The sound came again, a ghastly howling and screeching and moaning that seemed to work its way into the engines’ frames and bury itself there, leaving them all shaking. The doors and windows began to rattle and shake, as if hundreds of people were banging on them, trying to pry them open.

Out after dusk!” they howled. “They were out after dusk!” Pip and Emma began to shake, terrified.

Another ear-piercing whistle filled the air, made of even more tortured howling and screeching. Then came the screams. As the engine thundered towards Tidmouth, each beat of its cylinders sounded like the screams of the damned. The entire shed seemed to shake, as the horrific banging and rattling continued.

Out after dusk! Out after dusk! They belong to us! They belong to us!” Pip and Emma quivered, petrified. The other engines looked equally terrified – all except Edward. As the cacophony reached a peak, he took a deep breath.

“You are not welcome inside. We are protected. This shed has been blessed; these engines have been blessed. You are not welcome inside!”  

ONE HAS NOT!” boomed the creatures outside. Pip gasped – she had refused the blessing!

The engine grew nearer; time seemed to slow. Edward took a level breath, and spoke again.

“You are not welcome inside. We are protected. This shed has been blessed; these engines have been blessed. You are not welcome inside!”  

ONE HAS NOT!” came the furious reply. Before Edward could speak again, there was a horrendous roar and scream of whistles, brakes and steam – the Tidmouth Train to Hell had arrived. It roared past, it’s red lamps illuminating against the doors. The shed walls groaned, as if nearly at braking point. The windows rattled harder, dents being made it the metal. Daisy shrieked and fainted.

Thomas began praying under his breath in one language; the twins did the same in a different one. The train sped into the station, thundering towards the buffers. One dent slammed against the glass of the window next to Pip, cracking the glass. A gnarled nail pierced through the shutter.

“You are not welcome inside. We are protected. This shed has been blessed; these engines have been blessed. You are not welcome inside!”  Edward thundered again, his eyes darting over to the shutter.

The train hit the buffers.

The creatures outside let out a chorus of tortured screams. They were in agony, ripping away from the sheds and howling in pain. The nail was torn from the shutter, giving Pip just enough space to see dark figures writhing on the ground.

The clock ticked over; a new day began. The creatures let out one last screech. The floor seemed to open up around them, hellflames licking up at the night fog and illuminating the entire night in a sea of blood red. The creatures screaming and screeched, dragged downwards and suffocated in the earth before they could be scorched alive by the flames.

And then there was silence.

“Oh…” managed Pip softly.

Everyone looked shaken. Edward sighed softly, and looked over at the twins. “The last time an engine was out after dusk and wasn’t blessed was in 1916, during the war,” he said quietly. “Thomas mightn’t remember it – but I do. It was a loaned engine who told us all that Sauin was stupid… that is, until the creatures of hell surrounded the sheds and began demanding we give him over. Glynn kept trying to keep them out, but he slipped up. The engine’s shed door was ripped open suddenly, and he was… dragged out. We never say what pulled him out – but whatever it was bent that door open like it was a tin can and shoved it back down afterwards. We all heard the loaned engine’s screams as it was given to the creatures and torn piece from piece…”

Edward paused, and gazed at the shed doors, looking wary.

“It’s said that engine became the Tidmouth Train to Hell, crossing the island and giving the spirits and creatures time to roam free before arriving in Tidmouth and condemning them all back to hell, to make sure none can inflict that fate on another.”

He finished his story and looked around the silent room. Daisy was still unconscious, and it was a miracle none of the others had followed. Everyone’s eyes were fixed on the dent shutter and cracked window, a stark warning of how close the creatures got.

No one slept that night.

And suffice to say, Pip and Emma were never late again on Sauin.

Traintober 2024: Day 29 - Misty

I WARNED YOU ABOUT THE RAVINE:

Henry the Green Engine had never forgotten about his encounters by the lake. They stuck in his mind, and he decided to ask Old Bailey the stationmaster about them.

“A fogman’s coat?” quizzed Old Bailey. “I didn’t set one of them up – I put up a barrier across the track with a sign saying the line was dangerous – didn’t you see it?” “No…” Henry replied slowly, and he explained what he’d seen. Old Bailey looked nervous.

“Well,” he said slowly. “There are old legends about this part of the island. Be careful, okay?” Henry agreed, and decided to warn whichever engine Sir Topham Hatt chose to run the new branch.

The day before the engine arrived, Henry had to take a late night supplies train to the far end of the little branchline, beyond the station Old Bailey now ran. The line here curved along the ravine before crossing over an immense viaduct that carried it over said ravine. It reached deep into the Sudrian heartlands, where it passed through a small village, around the lake and then crossed over another, smaller bridge to reach its final destination. The second, older industrial line at Old Bailey’s station had been quietly pulled up, and the station building turned to face the line. Now, the gates simply hung there, smashed and useless. Sir Topham was planning on removing them – but strangely enough, no one did.

It was a beautiful little line during the day, but at night it gained an eerie feeling. The trees seemed more like gnarled hands reached out of the ground, and rush of water at the bottom of the ravine echoed around. Henry didn’t like it very much, and was happy to speed through his job. At the end of the line, he shunted away his trucks and slowly began to puff backwards. An owl hooted in the distance. Henry grimaced – he knew what that meant.

As Henry made his way home, a thick mist slowly rose up from deep in the ravine, enveloping both him and the line. It swirled around, teasing at Henry’s dome and valve gear. Henry gulped, squeezing his eyes tight and taking a deep breath. The ghost had warned him, the ghost wasn’t out to hurt him. He believed in it, and in the fact it would help him if he needed it. Whatever this ghost was, it had proven that much.

The mist grew even thicker, until Henry could barely see the lineside. It didn’t help that his fog lamps had been mounted on his tender to allow his crew to see down the line. “We’re just crossing the viaduct now, old boy,” called his driver. “Thank you!” Henry called back. He rumbled over the viaduct and continued on, making his way along the side of the ravine. As he did, he looked down at the lineside, and nearly yelped. Down by the lineside, lamp swinging, was a dark figure, strolling along the ballast. It was too dark to make out anything but his lamp – Henry quietly hoped it was Old Bailey, but something in his boiler told him it wasn’t.

Henry made his way back to the safety of Edward’s station as quickly as his wheels would carry him. He found Edward there, waiting for the old engine in the sheds.

“I saw something,” hissed Henry. “It was probably the ghost,” replied Edward easily. “No one knows who or what it is – but it is known that it roams that branchline at night, looking out for dangers and warning engines… well, so long as you respect it. Rumour has it, if you insult the ghost… well, it’s said it will exact revenge.” Henry shuddered at the thought. He was thankful that the ghost hadn’t considered his own words sufficiently insulting. He fell asleep hoping that the engine the Fat Controller sent was sensible enough to also heed the ghost’s warnings.

‘PEEP! PEEP PEEP PEEP!” Henry and Edward jolted awake, spluttering and yelping. A bright orange tank engine steamed into the sheds, grinning from ear to ear and showing off his slightly crooked teeth.

“Billy!” snapped Henry furiously. “What is wrong with you?! Don’t you know better than to do that to your elders?” “Don’t be a drag, Henhouse.  I’m having fun.” Henry and Edward shared an indignant look.

“Why are you here anyway, Billy?” asked Edward. Billy smirked; Henry wished he could shove Billy off the rails at the sight of that look. Especially flashed at Edward. “I’ve been given my own branchline by the Fat Controller,” Billy boasted. “The one to the lake!” Henry felt his jaw go slack. “You?!” he exclaimed. “Of all the engines in England, he chose you?! Is he having a laugh? You are an insipid little engine with no tact, no sense and not a polite bolt in your frame! I’m meant to hand this line over to you?” “There’s no need for such rudeness,” sniffed Billy. “I’m perfectly capable!” Henry wasn’t sure he agreed.

The big engine was unfortunately tasked with teaching Billy the line over the rest of the day. Billy was not pleasant to work with at all. He banged about roughly, never wanting to do any of the hard work like shunting or arranging short freight trains. All Billy wanted to do was roam about the line with his coaches, adhering to a timetable that suited him and his desires.

This meant Henry spent most of his day physically forcing Billy to stay still and actually do his work – it wore the poor engine right out, and by the time the pair made it back to the sheds Henry was exhausted. At least there was no supply train that evening.

As Henry tried to rest his aching wheels, an owl fluttered over to a nearby tree and hooted loudly. “Stupid bird,” sniffed Billy. Henry winced, remembering his encounter the night before. “You should respect that owl,” he warned. “For whenever that owl hoots, a mist rolls in. There’s a legend that when the mist’s about, there’s a ghost about too. You be careful on that line, Billy.”

Billy scoffed, loudly.

“Don’t be stupid, Henry! There’s no such thing as ghosts, and even if there was it’s a pathetic ghost if it’s heralded by an owl of all things. You’ve lost it, old timer. You can take your sorry excuse for a ghost story and ram it up your—” Edward blasted his whistle as he backed into the sheds, drowning out Billy. His lips were drawn into a thin line, and he looked actually angry; Henry felt a chill run through his boiler at that. Edward was never angry.

“You should learn some sense and smarten up about that ghost, Billy. You’re running that branchline now, and you need to understand what it involves. That ghost will warn you of dangers, but only if you respect it!” Billy rolled his eyes. Edward scowled, but said no more.

“Just don’t insult it,” Edward said sharply. “I’ll do what I like!” Billy retorted petulantly.  

The next day was Billy’s first day alone on the branch. As he trundled along with his coaches, he thought back to Edward and Henry’s warnings.

“What a stupid story,” he said aloud. “There’s no such thing as ghosts! I bet I could say that this so-called ‘ghost’ was a disaster and a pathetic excuse for a supernatural entity and it wouldn’t do anything! In fact, I think the two of them are lying to me. Screw you, ghost!”

Billy didn’t notice, but the ground near the ravine weakened slightly, a few pebbles falling from the steep hill down to the lineside.

The day went on, and Billy barely spared a care for the ‘ghost’ or for running his branchline how Henry had suggested. He jaunted about with his coaches, dumping trucks on behind them when he had to and never waiting for his guard or any of the porters, shunters or even his own crew. It was a lucky thing indeed that nothing bad happened!

That evening, Billy was tasked with taking a late night train to the end of his line. He shunted his trucks together roughly, banging them into one another and storming about the yard in a foul temper. Henry puffed up alongside as Billy finished. An owl hooted, the two engines looking up to see it on the station roof.

“You’d do well to be careful,” Henry warned. Billy scoffed. “That stupid ghost malarky again? You and your ghost are both silly, ridiculous and foolish things that can take your ‘careful’ and ram it where the sun don’t shine!” And with that, Billy stormed away.

Henry watched him go, before looking back up at the owl. “I tried,” he sighed, and left.

Billy made his way along the line, muttering crossly to himself. “Owls, mists, ghosts? Henry’s gone soft in the smokebox! There’s no mist for one thing, and for another ghosts are a dumb spooky concept anyway. ‘Oooooo oooo, look, it’s a floating ball of gas that can’t hurt me! Try again with something actually scary, like a monster or a vampire.”

As Billy headed for Old Bailey’s station, he noticed an amber lamp in a tree. His driver closed the regulator. “That’s odd, the line was fine earlier,” he murmured. Billy huffed, and coasted forwards, his driver preparing to stop at any moment. They got to Old Bailey’s station, and found a fogman’s coat stuck on a tree branch and swaying in the breeze. Billy groaned.

“Great, so now people are losing their property too,” sniffed Billy. “Let’s just keep going!”

They crept forwards, and found that the signal by the station was set to ‘caution’. A sign nailed to one of the crossing gates read: ‘slow at the ravine’. The sign was written in an odd, dark red that seemed to almost still be wet. “That’s odd,” hummed Billy’s driver. “I wonder why that warning is there.” Billy scoffed. “It’s probably something stupid. Let’s just get this done already! I bet it’s Henry trying to spook me by pretending to be his fake ghost. Come on!” With no evidence to the contrary, Billy’s driver agreed – but decided to proceed with caution.

As they passed alongside the ravine, a few rocks came loose and fell to the lineside. Billy stared. “That’s what the warning was for?! A few measly rocks?! If there is a ghost, it’s too dim-witted to realise what a true danger is!” “Oh will you belt up about that!” snapped his driver. “I for one don’t know what’s out there, and I’d rather listen to Henry than not.” “Don’t you tell me you’re one of them ‘believers’ too now!”

Billy’s driver didn’t reply, and the orange tank engine continued on.

Both Henry and Edward ignored Billy throughout the rest of the next day. It rained too, adding to the odd tension in the yards. Both Edward and Henry felt like something was off, but they weren’t sure what – either way, they knew whatever it was, Billy was blundering his way right towards it.

For his part, Billy didn’t seem to care. He banged about the yard and the branchline as he had done the day before, not really caring about how the rain dampened the already weakening soil and rock around the ravine.

That night, Billy had to deliver another train to the end of the line. As he prepared it, Edward sidled alongside. “I’d keep a keen eye out,” the old engine said vaguely. Billy scowled. “I don’t need advice from you!” he snapped. “I can do it myself!” Edward sighed, and said no more.

As Billy departed, Edward got the sinking feeling that the next time he saw the orange engine, it wouldn’t be in one piece.

Billy clattered to the junction with his branchline, his thoughts swirling about as he grumbled under his breath about everything and anything. He hated being bossed around or told what to do – he’d rather do it his own way, with his own ideas. And this stupid ghost business too, what rubbish—

“HOOT!” An owl swooped right in front of Billy, jolting him out of his head. Billy glared up at the bird, and tried to wheesh steam at it – but it had already flown away.

“I hate that dumb bird!” roared Billy furiously. “Find some hunters and shoot the darn thing!” His crew exchanged a nervous look.

It was only a few minutes later that the fog set in. It came thick and fast, enveloping Billy until he couldn’t even see his own buffers. This time, there was no amber lamp. There was no signal set to warn Billy, nor any fogman’s coat. Instead, a sign was nailed to a tree by the lineside:

I WARNED YOU ABOUT THE RAVINE

Billy barely spotted it, but when he did, it sent a chill through his boiler. The red paint didn’t look like paint in the thick mist; it looked like blood. Unbeknownst to Billy, a force quietly unhooked his trucks, braking them to a halt at the platform.

Then, it appeared in Billy’s cab, knocking both crew members unconscious and dropping them next to the trucks. Billy didn’t notice – at least, not at first.

“Driver? Driver cut off steam you idiot, we’re going too fast!”

He looked down at the lineside as a flash of light caught his eye. A blood-soaked figure straggled by; Billy didn’t get a proper look, but he thought it’s eyes were glaring straight into his soul. Now he was beginning to worry.

“Driver? Driver! Stop me now!” There was no reply.

Billy roared around the bend, right as the rock and earth gave way. It roared down the hillside, slamming right into Billy and sweeping him off the line. With a scream, Billy was dragged off the line and into the ravine, plunging downwards before smashing into the jagged rocks below.

There was a hiss, a groan – and then nothing.

It was morning when Henry was awoken by a frantic foreman. “Billy never returned last night, and Old Bailey just found his crew and trucks at his station. Go along the line and see what you can find!”

Henry was hurriedly steamed up. Edward opened a sleepy eye. “We tried to warn him,” he murmured. Henry winced, and made his way towards the old branchline.

As he approached Old Bailey’s station, he spotted something that made his fire turn to ice. The sign was still nailed to the tree. In the daylight, it was very clearly written in blood.

“Oh… oh hell…” gulped Henry, feeling queasy. His fireman leaned out of his cab and threw up on the lineside. Old Bailey met him at the platform with Billy’s crew.

“We were driving along one moment,” the driver said quietly. “And then I felt someone behind me – and then we were here. I just don’t get it – what happened?” “I have a feeling I might know,” murmured Henry, feeling deeply unwell. “And Mr Bailey, sir… you might want to take the sign down. The ghost… uh… made itself very clear.” Old Bailey raised a confused eyebrow, and wandered down to the sign. When he saw it, he shouted in alarm and jumped a good ten feet back.

“There really is a ghost!” he exclaimed, and sprinted back to the platform. “And it’s angry.” “I think I know why too,” sighed Henry. “Billy thought we were idiots for being afraid of a ghost. I think it didn’t take kindly to his… uh… words.” “But that begs the question… where is Billy now?” Henry had a sinking feeling that he knew. He shunted the trucks out of the way, and everyone crammed into the works coach behind him. Henry very slowly made his way up the line, before braking to a halt. There was another landslide across the track – or… there had been. The track itself was clear, but debris had built up on either side. Most of it had plunged over the side, alongside…

Billy.

The orange tank engine was destroyed. The fall had punctured his boiler, and shards of rock stuck out. His cab was crumpled, his wheels sticking out at horrible angles. The worst bit was his smokebox. It had been slammed with a boulder, and was completely caved in. There was almost nothing that could have been salvaged. Henry looked down to the lineside, and spotted an old amber lamp sitting there, glass cracked. He paused, then looked up.

He may have been imagining it, but he thought he could see a figure darkened by the harsh glare of the sun, watching them all as they stared down at Billy’s remains.

Traintober 2024: Day 26 - Music:

The Gramophone:

Sir Charles Topham Hatt loves his railway. The North Western Railway had flourished under his tenure, with the Knapford Harbour being rebuilt and the Arlesburgh branch being reopened. His father’s legacy was secured, the railway was insulated from British Railways and its baying diesels. All in all, a grand career.

But Sir Charles hadn’t always worked on the North Western.

One early morning, The Fat Controller arrived at his office in Tidmouth to find something new sitting atop his filing cabinet. It was an old-fashioned gramophone, the kind that had been popular three decades ago. It still had the great big old brass horn that had been superseded by more dynamic sound output systems in the ‘60s, making it seem far bulkier than it really was. Sir Charles walked over, and checked it for a note, or a message, or anything! But there was no hint of who had left it.

A quick check with the station staff revealed that none of them had put it in his office either – though that left all of them with no real explanation as to how exactly the weird old thing ended up in Sir Charles’ office.

“Perhaps it’s a gift from your wife,” offered the stationmaster eventually. “Your sixtieth is coming up soon, sir.” Sir Charles considered. He supposed it was something his wife would do – she’d surprised him with a holiday to Spain for his fiftieth, and he had been collecting a few records in his office recently. She must’ve seen them during their last lunch date. “It must be,” he agreed. “And the note must’ve fallen off somewhere.”

With that, Sir Charles settled in to start his day’s paperwork. He paused in front of his record collection, and selected the most recent Elton John album, popping it on the old gramophone and setting everything up right. To his amazement, the record fitted perfectly on the turntable. That seemed a bit odd – most old record players weren’t built for the size of modern vinyls. But it fit, and when Sir Charles placed the needle down, the record began to play with no complaints at all. The Fat Controller smiled fondly, and sat back down to work.

All through the day, Sir Charles played music while he worked, flipping out recent records he’d bought on a whim for older classical pieces that reminded him of his youth and the songs his father would play for him while they sat at home. The music flittered out of the office, filling the station concourse and intriguing even the engines.

At the end of the day, Sir Charles placed all his records back, turned off the gramophone, and caught the Edward’s train bound for Wellsworth.

The next morning, Sir Charles arrived at the Big Station to find Henry waiting nervously on the goods line. He seemed very startled. “What’s the matter?” asked Sir Charles. Henry’s eyes darted around, and then he let off steam. “I heard… I heard something weird last night. When I came through with the Kipper. It sounded like… like me, from when Sir Topham… when he…” Henry broke off, not wanting to finish his sentence. Sir Charles frowned, not sure what to say. “You heard father? When he… bricked you up?” Henry sighed. “Yes. It was awful! I could hear his voice, but it was twisted… he was threatening me, telling me horrible things… I thought it was imagination at first, but it was definitely here.”

Sir Charles nodded grimly. “Thank you for telling me, I will look into it. For now, I’ll ask the signalman to reroute you around the station. It’ll mean you can’t get up to speed as quick, but it may be for the best until we can get to the bottom of the noise.” Henry agreed, and steamed away to start his day. Sir Charles made his way to his office, and paused.

There was a record on the gramophone. It was one of his oldest, a recording of an opera from back in the 20s. Sir Charles gently put it away, confused. His office had been locked, and the stationmaster knew better than to enter without permission. No one else had a key, and nothing else was out of place.

“Did I… leave it there?” asked Sir Charles aloud, not sure what else to think. Sir Charles swapped it out for a Supremes record, and began his day. He tried to investigate the odd, terrible noises that had haunted Henry – but he couldn’t find anything that might’ve caused it.

“Maybe some children…?” pondered Sir Charles, before shaking his head. No, children wouldn’t know what his father had sounded like. With no idea what had caused the weird noises, Sir Charles decided to simply reroute Henry around the station and shelve it until he could find some more evidence.

At the end of the day, he once again packed up his records, locked his office, and headed home.

It was a shaken and pale Bear that met him at the Big Station the next morning, looking very ill. “What’s the matter?” asked Sir Charles, immediately worried for his engine. “I – sir it was terrible! I was coming through with the midnight goods, when… when… I heard Swindon!” Sir Charles waited patiently for Bear to elaborate, now worried and confused.

“It was when I was being built – they were scrapping steam engines there too, and I heard them. I could hear their screams, and their pleas, and their hatred of me… I had to get out. I don’t want to pull the midnight goods again, sir.”

Sir Charles was now very worried – Bear was not one to try and ask for changes, he loved all work he got. Something very serious was going on, and Sir Charles needed to figure it out. First Henry, then Bear – who would be next?

Not even playing music on his gramophone could came Sir Charles down; he was trying his best to figure out what had caused such horrible noises and scenes to ring out across the station – but nothing could have done it!

Sir Charles was so preoccupied that he completely missed the fact that one of his old Bobby Lewis records had already been sat on the turntable when he entered his office. He spent all day working, balancing his usual work with his investigation, even as interrogating the station staff revealed that only the night guard had even been on the property, making his rounds.

An old, half-buried memory bubbled up – his time in the Middle East after the war had left him with many stories, including one of people’s tortured pasts manifesting into demons… or was it something else. Could such tales be a reality?

Sir Charles scoffed, and brushed it off. Such fantasies were for bedtime stories and frightening tourists – they were not real, and they could not help.

And then James came to him the next day, refusing to even steam under the canopy of the Big Station. “Sir! Your station’s haunted!” snapped James crossly. “It was… it was… it was a recording of my accident, playing all through the station! My accident on my first day, with all the screaming from my brakes and trucks and my crew trying to stop me…” Sir Charles rearranged the schedule to shift James away from the Big Station immediately, and retreated back to his office, mindlessly placing the needle on the record on his gramophone before pausing as an old jazz record played.

“Isn’t this from 1925…?” mused Sir Charles under his breath, before shaking his head and knuckling down to work. He’d been so worried about his engines that several important missives had gone unanswered, and they took even longer as his mind just kept drifting back to his engines and the frightening incidents that they been forced to relive.

The day ticked by, and then dusk came and went. Sir Charles stayed in his office, unable to head home without finishing the stack of reports that had been due the day before but were really needed the next day.

Bit by bit, the station went silent. The last of the passengers boarded their trains, the station staff clocked off one by one. The night guard arrived, greeting Sir Charles and headed off to start making his rounds.

Sir Charles switched out the record on his player mindlessly, not checking what he put on the turntable.

“We'll meet again Don't know where Don't know when But I know we'll meet again some sunny day Keep smiling through Just like you always do 'Till the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away

So will you please say hello To the folks that I know Tell them I won't be long They'll be happy to know That as you saw me go I was singing this song

We'll meet again—”

The song suddenly jumped, the nostalgic record going silent for a beat. Then, a scream filled the office. Sir Charles jumped, his eyes wide. The roar of gunfire filled the room, the rumble of tanks and the thunderous commands of his superior officers. The screams of the men as they were shot and left to die of their injuries, the nurses unable to get onto the field. The whine of shells as they pierced through the air, falling indiscriminately on the men as they tried to evacuate. “CHARLIE! GET BACK!” Sir Charles clamped his eyes shut, holding his hands over his ears. “Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!” he begged, but the record didn’t stop. The sounds grew ever louder, the fighting getting closer and closer to the Royal Engineers as they tried desperately to evacuate the soldiers and get them to the beaches. The thump of boots of cobblestone, the whistling of flung grenades, the harsh snarl of German commands as the enemy closed in – it was all too much.

Sir Charles blindly lunged for the gramophone, grabbing at it and sprinting at the door. He kicked at it, the old door groaning at the force before Sir Charles managed to force it open and fling the gramophone away from himself. His ears were ringing, the bullets whizzing past him with bare inches to spare.

The gramophone smashed against the platform and shattered, the pieces flying in all directions. The night guard came running, his truncheon out and his eyes searching for the source of the smash.

He found Sir Charles curled up on the floor, rocking back and forwards while holding his arms over his head, covering his ears.

“Sir? Sir!” “Make it stop!” bellowed Sir Charles. “Has it stopped?!” The night guard looked around, perplexed. He couldn’t hear or see anything wrong, apart from Sir Charles and his destroyed gramophone.

“It’s stopped,” assured the night guard, waiting patiently until Sir Charles uncoiled and looked around, eyes wide and face pale.

The pair looked down at the gramophone, and then Sir Charles took a deep breath.

“We’re breaking this apart more and tossing it in the nearest dumpster,” he ordered. “I will not have such malevolent disturbances on my railway.” The night guard nodded slowly, and offered up his truncheon. Sir Charles brought it down on the old gramophone again and again and again until it was in splinters, before helping to quietly sweep it all up and toss it out.

Sir Charles Hatt hadn’t always worked on the North Western Railway. During the Second World War, he had been part of the Royal Engineers, working near the front lines to keep the troops moving. It had been on the 30th of May, 1940. Charles had been with his unit when the Germans had launched a surprise attack – the lines had broken, fallen back; Charles was the only man of his unit who survived. He never liked to remember the horrors of that day, the entire thing too gruesome to bear. He never spoke about it to anyone either, even as he made it home to Sodor and quietly married.

Sir Charles hadn’t always worked on the North Western Railway; once upon a time, he’d been a young man who’d been sent to war.

Traintober 2024: Day 8 - Impact

The Impact of Duck Leaving Tidmouth:

This was meant to be serious, but then immediately became a shitpost...

Quite famously, the Big Engines did not react well to Thomas getting his own branchline, going on strike and nearly closing the railway because they did not want to shunt their own trains. Equally famously, the Big Engines did not react well when Duck arrived, being difficult for both engines until Duck and Percy forcibly blocked them from entering the sheds.

Less well known is how the Big Engines reacted to Duck gained his own branchline and left them once again without a shunter. Admittedly, the entire incident was more subdued than when Thomas left – there was no strike this time – but it was still certainly memorable!

The first impact of Duck leaving was of course the fact that the engines had to shunt their own trains. Still hating the notion of shunting, the Big Engines all tried to come up with a new idea for how the Fat Controller could shunt the trains at Tidmouth without forcing them to enter the sidings. These ranged from the outdated (Gordon suggested getting some horses to do it) to the ridiculous (Henry thought a pulley system with a stationary boiler could shunt the trains) to the outright insane (James actually once suggested giving the trucks their own engines to shunt themselves!)

Naturally, the Fat Controller was not impressed with any of these ideas – not to mention Douglas quite tactlessly reminding James of an incident an engine had with some tar wagons – which led to the Big Engines being forced to think of a new idea. Percy chipped in to suggest using Terence the tractor as a temporary solution one time and was laughed out of the yards… only for Sir Charles to overhear the idea and decide to implement it! As such, two days later the Big Engines awoke to Terence the tractor trundling about the yard putting together freight trains. This was not received well by the Big Engines, however it was the passengers who eventually forced Sir Charles to send Terence home, as one day a little boy jumped onto Terence while he was trying to shunt the express. The number of complaints that incident got were astronomical!

Donald made a sly remark about converting the Fat Controller’s car into a small shunter – but that just got him put shunting duties himself. Donald thankfully was used to shunting and did not treat it like he was being forced to carry the weight of the world on his back like Atlas. James thought Donald was being petty because he’d made the comparison the week before.

In the end, Sir Charles was left with no other option but to find a new engine – thankfully, he managed to get a transfer from the Southern Railway named Rosie, as well as a Class 07 named Salty. The pair would prove themselves to be capable engines, although that’s a story for another day.

The slightly less obvious impact was how it changed the dynamics in the yard. Duck had very much been in charge of the yards and had kept it in order with a set of iron buffers – removing him opened the yard up to a new pecking order, one which made Tidmouth very interesting for a long while. It is no coincidence that its in the mid-to-late sixties that Henry, James and Gordon all take interest in new engines. Henry was the first to move, advocating for Bear and finding himself an ally in the process. Gordon responded by trying to get BoCo on his side – and by association hopefully Edward – though he was beaten by Donald and Douglas. All three Big Engines did their best to sway Oliver to their side by absolutely burying him in flattery – but in the end, none of it really mattered, much to Henry, Gordon and James’ surprise.

Of all the engines, it was Flying Scotsman who orchestrated the new yard order, doing so very quietly in the background while he was on the island. The world-famous engine had read all about his brother’s various exploits, and had not been overly pleased with Gordon’s behaviour. He arrived with Rosie and Salty in tow, and was met with a yard that was full of chaos.

Now, most yards in the steam era had a pecking order which revolved around express engines and shunting engines – but Tidmouth had no solid order due to both Thomas and Percy having no clue how to establish such a hierarchy and Duck being too late to pull the engines in line. So Flying Scotsman did instead, helping Duck, Donald and Douglas to assert themselves with the trucks, coaches and staff. By the time any of the Big Engines had a clue that Scott had had a buffer in reforming the trucks and curbing their influence, the world-famous engine was in the USA and couldn’t be yelled at.

Edward was rather pleased with Scott’s work – he had managed to finally instil some discipline in the trucks and get one over on Henry, James and Gordon! Bear and BoCo enjoyed the easier trains and the connections Scott had given the railway to get some of the diesels off their collective backs. And Duck managed to somehow keep his spot as head of the yards until he happily passed the position off to Rosie when she had settled in.

In the end, Duck leaving the Big Station had a pretty notable impact on Sodor, even if only indirectly. Almost every engine took note of what was happening at the Big Station – mostly to laugh at the ‘power plays’ the Big Engines thought they were making but also because it was basically a railway-themed Soap Opera. The only engine who really didn’t care was Thomas - who was convinced that the entire railway reacted to how his branchline ran - and Daisy, who was too busy trying to be noticed by the Flying Scotsman to care.

Let's Talk About Rebecca:

Well, I said we needed to talk about Rebecca, and here we are.

To begin with, I would like to preface this with a simple disclaimer: I am in no way telling people to like or dislike the version of Rebecca found in BWBA, but instead looking into what caused such a deep disdain for this character, one that lasted long after Henry had been departed and was fuelled not by her position as a ‘replacement’, but rather by the series itself. This is not a dissertation on why Henry is a stronger character and why Rebecca should never have been introduced - that is counterproductive and, in some ways, false. This is instead something adjacent to an essay in which I will focus on how Rebecca’s flawed introduction, characterisation and tenure in the series both represents the BWBA era as a whole, but also what led to her being notably absent from All Engines Go, the reboot of Thomas and Friends. This will be followed by me attempting to redesign her characterisation and create an alternate version of Rebecca, one which in my opinion would have done far better for herself in the series. 

Part 1: Who is Rebecca, and Why Her Characterisation Doesn't Work:

According to the former official Thomas and Friends website, Rebecca is: “...a very cheerful and happy engine. She is painted a sunshine yellow which reflects her positive outlook on life. Rebecca always sees the best in others and enjoys helping everyone around her feel good about themselves. Despite her warm nature, Rebecca is not afraid to stand up for herself or her friends. She is a big, strong tender engine who is not intimidated by the more experienced engines on the railway. Rebecca is the number 22 engine.” 

Already, there is a major issue here: her characterisation is a strange amalgamation of others, who could probably just as easily take on her roles without really breaking any of the episodes she is in. “Cheerful and happy” are characteristics held by Ryan, Stanley, Whiff, Thomas, Percy, Edward, Mavis, Peter Sam; the list goes on. There are already far too many engines whose main qualities are cheerful and happy. She is painted yellow - like Molly and Flora were, or if we go further back, like Jock, Pip and Emma were. “Sees the best in others” was once upon a time a quality unique to Edward, as well as Salty. “Enjoys helping everyone around her feel good about themselves” sounds way too close to what Emily has become in the series, without mentioning the evolutions of Mavis’ character or Rocky’s character. If we add in her clumsiness and shyness, we get Kevin and Molly respectively - and Kevin is also yellow! She isn’t intimidated nor does she have any trouble at all with fending off engines who want to be mean to her. She isn’t unique here either: Duck did this when he first arrived, and he had a much bigger and more notable impact because of how he acted when confronted with the big engines' attitudes. What all this really means is that Rebecca has already finished a character arc at some point in the past and does not need to grow further. 

And here we reach the crux of the problem with Rebecca in BWBA: she has nowhere for her character to grow into - something all the other main characters have done decades ago. This is especially problematic at this late stage in the show; Thomas & Friends has been running since 1984, and almost every character they pair Rebecca up with has had an exceptionally long time to bed themselves in and grow into the space they occupy. For Rebecca to compete, and truly qualify for her status as a main character, her character needs to make its own space - and importantly, make that space bigger than as many other characters as possible. This is a running problem in the TV series post Season 7, and something that really baked itself into the show by the time the series reached CGI: the characters do not develop. The Steam Team (bar Emily) hasn’t had any real, natural character developments since the Mitton era - not any sustained over multiple seasons, at least. If we go back to the Classic series - or further back to the Railway Series - we find that the very essence of Thomas is in its strong characters and their natural growth. Gordon grows into being more humble, Edward and Henry grow more confident in themselves, Thomas and Percy mature and (to some extent) learn their limits - the list goes on. There are characters that do not grow as much or remain the same, yes - but they still have some sort of character arc where the essence of them as a character is tested. 

Rebecca does not undergo character growth in the series, and her character itself is not tested in any meaningful way. Instead, she is overused and underutilised - by which I mean, she appears constantly throughout the series but is given nothing to define her as being any different to any of the characters mentioned above. Worse yet, Rebecca’s leads are easily interchangeable with any other Steam Team member, and this further complicates her. Rebecca takes trucks perfectly - like Donald or Douglas would, or perhaps Edward? Rebecca is too fast and leaves passengers behind - like Peter Sam did to the refreshment lady. And when she causes all kinds of delay, is that not like James did way back in Series 3? And she’s tricked by Diesel… like almost every single engine in the entire series, going as far back as Gordon, Henry and James were in Series 2. 

Would it have been better to divide Rebecca’s leads up and give other, more established engines more spotlight? Probably. Her personality is similar to a number of others, and her introduction is basically a mix and mash of older episodes - notably the eighth series episode, Thomas and the Tuba, the tenth series episode, Seeing the Sights, the first series episode, Thomas' Train, and the fourth series episode, Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady. This really doesn’t help to define her, especially when all fans think about when they watch the episode is what other, older episode it is most like. Her subsequent appearances do very little to endear her either, both due to the lack of effort put in by Mattel to ground Rebecca in the series and the low impact of the episodes she does star in. Characters like Oliver or Duke have had lasting impacts on the fandom despite their short tenures because their episodes have high impact. Duck is one of the most popular characters in the fandom of this show, despite having been a secondary character ever since Series 5, and being practically absent from the series between Series 8 and Series 16.

Rebecca also takes up a difficult spot as a replacement for Henry, which complicates her relationship with a large portion of the fandom, meaning a lot of her as a character is questioned in relation to what Henry would have done. While technically, Rebecca was slated as a replacement to Edward, her arrival coincides with Henry’s departure, and thus for the purposes of this, we will consider her to have taken the position Henry had, similarly to Nia and Edward. Whether or not Henry’s departure from the main cast is a bad thing is an issue unto itself, which dives into character assassination and to what extent the Henry seen in Season 21 is the same Henry seen in Season 1. In either case, Rebecca’s roles could have quite easily been filled by Henry or another standing character, and her characterisation is too similar to other, pre-existing characters to make her stand out amongst her costars and their longer, more notable characterisations and character growths. 

Much of this is compounded by how Rebecca was introduced and integrated into the main cast, which is clearly seen when compared with another notable case of an engine joining the Steam Team after it had been first codified: Emily. 

Part 2: Rebecca vs Emily - How to Introduce a Main Character: 

Rebecca’s introduction is extremely underwhelming, especially for a Steam Team member. Thomas and Gordon shared the very first episode, Edward established himself as a foil to Gordon in his introduction and in Henry’s first appearance, he is bricked up in a tunnel in perhaps one of the series’ most infamous and iconic episodes. James makes his grand entrance by crashing into a field, Percy nearly gets destroyed by Gordon and Toby tugs on the viewer’s heartstrings as we watch him lose his entire livelihood. Moving forward several seasons, Emily’s introduction includes her saving another engine from a terrible accident - and then lastly, Nia gets an entire movie to embed her. Rebecca just bumbles about for ten minutes and takes the final shed at Tidmouth. 

To make matters worse, Henry’s departure is equally low-intensity. Edward at least got a full episode; Henry got a single line, used to further Gordon’s character as opposed to finalising Henry’s arc and introducing Rebecca’s. And while Gordon’s character here is interesting and new and possibly the first real growth we’ve seen from any of the Steam Team since Henry, Toby and Percy regressed into children before CGI even began; it does nothing to create a satisfactory conclusion to Henry’s arc or properly build up Rebecca’s arrival. This ultimately undermines Rebecca’s position as a primary character in the series, where she has joined far too late in the series to make an impact without dedicated time and effort being put into her. 

We are expected to accept that Rebecca has simply arrived and is now a main character by the show without any reasoning behind this. There is no connection between the viewer and Rebecca to justify this promotion to main character status, and it is telling. The writers don’t have anything new or unique to say about Rebecca either and it reflects in her episodes, which are remixes of old episodes or bland and unoriginal. This is especially painful in an era when so much of the writing is like this, bar the few episodes that really manage to break through the white noise. Ironically, two of the episodes that do really stand out have Edward and Toby as main characters respectively. 

In contrast, Emily is very well introduced to her position and has a long, notable character arc that plays out across both the Classic and HiT eras to cement her as a main character before making her a permanent member of the Steam Team - a journey that endeared her to fans and helped to build her characterisation to make her unique and interesting. Emily is first introduced in Season 7, where she has a strong introductory story played out against Thomas where she steals Annie and Clarabel and then rescues Oliver from a nasty accident. I’m not entirely certain, but this might be the first time that an engine takes Annie and Clarabel without asking - prior to this, Percy and Duck both got permission or it wasn’t mentioned. And after this episode, Emily does not immediately move into Tidmouth Sheds - she remains at Knapford, despite having further notable appearances across the rest of the season. 

What is made apparent in Season 7 is her characterisation. Emily is brave and bossy, but kind-hearted. She doesn’t headline constantly either, instead playing off other characters and rolling into the background when needed. She slots naturally into a secondary role in this season and feels like an engine who belongs on the NWR. Season 7 introduces Emily to viewers and gives her characterisation to back up her unique appearance. Season 8 continued this trend, building on her more and pairing her up with different engines to settle her comfortably into being a proper presence on the island - notice how it’s an evolution over two seasons? By Calling All Engines, Emily is a main character by virtue of her cementing herself into the cast, and her berth at Tidmouth feels like a natural progression of her story, firmly planting Emily as a Steam Team member. By Season 11, she is being used as a primary character to bounce newbies like Whiff off of! 

When considering Emily and Rebecca, two takeaways make themselves known: firstly, that characters need time and effort to be cemented in the story, especially when introduced long after most other central characters have had time to imbed themselves; and secondly that characters need strong, interesting differences when compared to those they share the screen with in order to fill unfilled positions. Emily is brave and bossy, giving her a unique style that makes her work great either as the protagonist or antagonist of a story. It gives her character flexibility - she can either be the engine that the protagonist is paired up with to learn something from or it can make her big-headed and in need of being taught a lesson of her own, one which she will - in her own way - try and pass on. We don’t meet someone with a truly bossy personality like Emily’s again until Bradford, and even then it isn’t the same. Bradford is used as a comedic character, whereas Emily’s bossiness was treated seriously. 

In comparison, Rebecca’s characterisation causes her to fade where she needs to shine. By being given a personality that has already been used consistently in Thomas, she fails to have a lasting impact and the abruptness of her introduction and elevation to the Steam Team is jarring and gives older viewers no reason to be interested in her. When combining this with the few defining qualities she has, it is equally hard for Rebecca to intrigue new viewers, making her feel bland and unoriginal when compared to many of the characters she shares the screen with. Rebecca is asked to attempt and hold her own against characters who have been intentionally woven together by the series for decades - and as explained above, this is not an impossible feat. It is not an impossible feat in the CGI series either, as Hiro, Paxton and Marion have all managed to stand out in an era when characters very rarely got much character building beyond their introduction. Unfortunately, Rebecca is given none of the same care, and it is reflected in how little she is used. Despite appearing more often as the seasons continue, she gets fewer leads to the point where she has an equal number of leads to Toby in the final season.  

Emily and Rebecca are two sides of the same coin in terms of introduction, both first appearing in an episode rather than a movie and then becoming members of the main cast - the difference is that where Rebecca was shunted in and thus the writers were unsure how to use her, Emily’s careful character-building and integration into the series ensured she would always have fans, something that is reflected in her being given a proper conclusion to her character arc in Series 24, where she is given the number twelve and thus immortalised in the same way that Thomas through to Oliver were. 

Considering the above issues, it becomes quite clear that the potential best way to introduce Rebecca and have audiences become invested in her and her story is not to simply drop her into the series, but rather to build her up slowly, similarly to Emily - which was entirely possible and plausible. 

Part 3: What Could Have Been: 

If we assume that Mattel was fixated on Rebecca having her canon characterisation as well as the BWBA series, there is still an entirely plausible method that could naturally build her character into the main cast, though it is underpinned by the original intent of the showrunners to have her introduced in Series 21 and replace Edward

In Series 21, Rebecca is introduced and shown to be clumsy but kind. In keeping with the original episode, she messes up the express and gets in trouble, however she then redeems herself by rescuing Gordon when he breaks down with the express. She is shown to be clumsy but kind, and gets the lead in a couple of episodes, as well as several minor roles. Preferably, she stars in at least one episode with Thomas specifically. At the same time, audiences are introduced to Henry’s dilemma surrounding whether or not he should sleep at Tidmouth - be it cause of the Kipper, arguments with Gordon, or whatever. This both places Rebecca into audiences’ minds while simultaneously opening up the question of whether or not Henry will remain at Tidmouth. Edward leaves, but the shed remains open - this is filled by Nia. 

Continuing in this vein, in Series 22, Rebecca gets a couple more episodes than last season, specifically with both primary and notable secondary characters - I’m talking Duck, Oliver, Rosie, Daisy, Ryan - characters who are popular, relevant to the series and allows the series to cement her as a main addition to the cast. This is to cement her and give her plenty of characters to bounce off and develop relationships with. Meanwhile, Henry’s arc comes to a conclusion and Henry quits Tidmouth in the last episode of the season, leaving it open. This also allows the creators to build up Gordon’s reaction to Henry leaving, showing his struggle to adapt to Edward’s absence and his simmering disdain towards Nia for replacing Edward before the 23rd season. 

Finally, in Series 23, Rebecca takes the empty berth at Tidmouth, replacing Henry and kickstarting an episode - or preferably two, but this is Mattel, so it is likely to be one - where Rebecca is forced to withstand the brunt of Gordon’s anger as he boils over, being compared to Henry before proving herself. This plants her firmly as a main character, while also potentially giving her a strong reason to become close friends with Nia - who also had to deal with Gordon’s stubbornness. Henry is given a proper farewell arc as well, allowing him to gracefully retire to his secondary character status. 

By arranging Rebecca’s arrival over several seasons, she is given time to fall naturally into her position and role, developing slowly and making the connections with other characters needed to cement her position on the NWR before taking centre-stage. This would also help writers learn how to write her, creating a scenario where Rebecca has a real chance of taking off as a character and potentially even getting similar stories to Emily where she is the lead main character who is used to introduce new characters - like how Emily interacted with Whiff in the eleventh season. This would also help viewers to understand who Rebecca is and get comfortable with her presence in the show before being asked to accept her as a member of the Steam Team. 

However, I still feel like her characterisation is weak in comparison to other Steam Team members - as mentioned previously, her clumsiness has been done by several characters including Kevin and Percy, who is a fellow Steam Team member. Her “Cheerful and Happy” characterisation has been used by far too many characters to count - including Percy, Peter Sam, Derek, Stanley and more recently Ryan - and not even her bright yellow paintwork makes her unique in terms of the series, seeing as Molly and Flora both had similarly bright shades of yellow for paintwork back in the model series. Moreover, her leads place her in relatively generic situations where other characters likely would have produced far more interesting plotlines, such as Molly easily pulling trucks despite being built for expresses or James trying to prove he can still pull the express and getting into trouble. Based on this, a complete overhaul of Rebecca’s characterisation is needed. 

Part 4: How to Redevelop Rebecca as a Character: 

When designing a Thomas and Friends character, one of the first things required is a real-life basis - and Rebecca was given a very interesting and unique basis that had the potential to give her very interesting stories. Rebecca is a Bulleid Light Pacific, in particular an unrebuilt West Country Class.  These were strong, powerful mixed traffic Pacifics used by the Southern Railway from 1945 until 1967, giving them a lifetime of about 22 years. They were praised for their free steaming, excellent boilers, and had a number of notable innovations for British steam - including welded fireboxes and frames, as opposed to the traditional, riveted system. The class was also well-known for their availability, being able to pull trains on almost every line that the Southern Railway had. 

In contrast, the class was also very famous for their flaws. Remember, Rebecca is an unrebuilt West Country Class, which had many of the same problems and flaws as their larger Merchant Navy Class relatives. These issues would plague the three Bulleid Pacific classes to such an extent that many of them were rebuilt by British Railways in the 1950s into a more conventional design which utilised the strengths of the class while altering or replacing many of the issues that Bulleid built into the engines as he used them as a testing bed for some of his more modern ideas. In particular, the major problems with the West Country Class were: 

  • Adhesion problems: the lighter load on their driving axles meant that they were even more prone to wheelslip than the larger Merchant Navy class, requiring very careful control when starting a heavy train - there are several surviving videos of these engines struggling to start a train due to their wheelslip. 
  • High fuel consumption - these engines were hungry, and this was in many ways highlighted during the 1948 locomotive exchanges where the West Country Class burnt 13.5 kg/km as opposed to the 9.02 kg/km of the T9 class that they replaced - for reference, the West Country Class’ coal consumption is comparable to the Gresley A1 Pacifics prior to the exchange trials of 1925 - a number which was dropped to roughly 10 kg/km after they were modified into the A3 class. 
  • Restricted driver visibility due to the air-smoothed casing and soft steam exhaust from the multiple-jet blastpipe. The exhaust problem was never adequately resolved, and smoke continued to beat down onto the casing while moving, obscuring the driver's vision.
  • Maintenance problems: the chain-driven valve gear proved to be expensive to maintain and subject to rapid wear, which was particularly problematic during the Post War period, as British Rail focused on availability rather than high quality maintenance. 
  • Leaking: leaks from the oil bath onto the wheels caused oil to splash onto the boiler lagging. Once saturated with oil, the lagging attracted coal dust and ash, which provided combustible material, and sparks from heavy braking would set the lagging on fire underneath the air-smoothed casing. The fires were also attributed to oil overflowing from axlebox lubricators onto the wheels when stationary, to be flung upwards into the boiler lagging in service. In either case, the local fire brigade would be called to put the fire out, with cold water coming into contact with the hot boiler causing stress to the casings, meaning these un-rebuilt locomotives would have warped casings, the result of a lagging fire!

All of these strengths and flaws tell a notable story about the kind of engine Rebecca may have been in real life: an engine with extremely good power and speed, but with difficulty at slow speeds and design issues that could have dangerous and rather embarrassing unintended consequences. This is a brilliant basis for a character, and it really irks me how little of all of this characterisation gold that Mattel ended up using - while it is consistent with how they treat their newer characters, it is also a real shame. Especially considering that from all of this, it is really not hard to build a genuinely interesting character that wouldn’t feel too out of place in the Railway Series or Classic series. 

Firstly, based on the high coal consumption and severe maintenance and wheelslip issues, we can suggest that Rebecca is a bit clumsy and worries about how others perceive her. Her class was large enough for this to be less apparent back on the Southern, but perhaps she was one of the worst for it, so she was teased mercilessly - and so after having moved to Sodor, she fears how the other engines will treat her. To cover for these insecurities, Rebecca acts standoffish or gruff, wanting to keep the other engines at a distance so they can’t find out about her flaws and tease her for them - already very different from her original characterisation, but far more interesting as it makes her one of the few new NWR engines to actively try and push both steam and diesel engines away. Furthermore, her excellent steaming abilities and fast speeds in service could translate into Rebecca being somewhat reckless or a speed demon, wanting to use her strengths to both hide her weaknesses and as something she enjoys. Rebecca has an air-smoothed casing, and it may help her feel the wind better at speed, like Spencer with his streamlining. Quite simply, by using her basis as a starting-point for her personality, building up character-traits from strengths and flaws of the class, we can construct an interesting and different characterisation that draws people in, similarly to how the Reverend Awdry did with his eight famous engines. Better yet, it means that once the other characters crack open this more standoffish side to Rebecca, we can still see the kind and clumsy Rebecca from the TVS, but it feels more natural and rewarding to go through a journey to get there and if it’s directed only to her close friends, while also meaning that we the audience can still see her gruff side when dealing with unknowns or characters she dislikes. 

There is also the fact that by considering her class basis, show writers can find interesting stories or take other issues with Rebecca’s class to incorporate into her personality. For example, the low-visibility created by the air-smoothed casing could translate into eyesight problems for Rebecca that she tries to hide because she fears engines would tease her for them, potentially culminating in Rebecca passing a red signal and getting into a crash. Maybe she doesn’t like fire or hates the works because of bad memories, meaning Rebecca hides any mechanical faults until they cause her to break down on the main line. 

By building her character around her class basis, we can develop an alternative personality for Rebecca that naturally stands strongly around other engines - especially as there are very few other Southern Railway engines on Sodor who could see Rebecca’s gruff and cold attitude as the defence mechanism it is. It also gives Rebecca a strong connection to Henry, who acted practically the same when he first arrived on Sodor to hide his steaming problems, making him sympathetic to Rebecca and opening the two up to a long-term arc that ends with Henry having helped Rebecca grow into the happy, cheerful and clumsy engine from the series before leaving. Her recklessness could translate into a rivalry or competition with Gordon, who is far more responsible and meticulous with his express due to his experience and the pressure that has been put on him. 

However, this is not the only way to build a better characterisation for Rebecca, the other option being to make Rebecca into a foil for other main characters. 

Part 5: Rebecca as a Foil: 

The other way to build Rebecca’s character into something that flows naturally with the other, previously introduced Steam Team members with making her more unique and interesting is to build it around the concept of the foil character. A foil character is a character who contrasts with another character, typically contrasting with the protagonist - a strong example of foil characters are Edward and Gordon, or Thomas and Diesel 10. Rebecca could quite easily fall into the position of being a strong foil character to the three big engines, more specifically James and Gordon, who are without a solid foil character to be contrasted against since Edward’s departure. In BWBA, when Nia arrived, she was considered to be closer to Thomas and Percy than Gordon or James, leaving them without a natural opposite. Rebecca has all of the strengths and weaknesses to fill this role. 

For the first option, using the personality the series gives Rebecca, we get the following scenario: Rebecca arrives on Sodor and is both an express engine and a mixed-traffic engine. When she arrives, instead of fumbling her first Express badly, she succeeds, and James and Gordon become worried about their status and jealous of her high speeds. Remember, prior to the codification of the characters into one or two jobs by CGI, James was a common replacement for Gordon on the express, and having his role as secondary express engine threatened would be a major blow to his ego. Worse yet, Rebecca likes pulling trucks, and is thus both similar but also a complete narrative opposite to the pair. Other engines like her for her kindness and helpfulness, even if it does get her in trouble when she doesn’t get her own work done on time - which Gordon and James exploit to make rude remarks about her. 

Already, Rebecca is a natural foil for Gordon and James, being similar enough for viewers to compare one to the other while also being different enough that her positive traits are highlighted against their negative ones. 

Then, Gordon could discover her hidden clumsiness and wheelslip problems, exploiting them to cause her embarrassment - something that has previously happened to James and when Rebecca is reprimanded for the resulting incident, he remembers his own struggles with wheelslip. This makes him more sympathetic to both Rebecca and the audience, and places him on a path towards apologising to Rebecca for how he spoke to her - while Gordon enjoys having the express to himself again. This could follow naturally towards an endpoint where Gordon gets his comeuppance and Rebecca is accepted into the Steam Team, having been a natural foil to both and developed close character relationships based on how she is positioned in contrast to Gordon and James. The series then progresses to seeing Rebecca act in opposition to the pair, as well as trying to one-up them, being either the protagonist or antagonist depending on who the hero of the story is. 

The second option is to use the character made for Rebecca in the previous part - the one built out of her basis and its issues - to turn Rebecca into a strong foil to Gordon and Henry, as well as potentially to Diesel or Thomas. This would begin with Rebecca arriving and acting recklessly with the express, being a speed demon where  Gordon demands professionalism due to his experience. This startles CGI Henry, who is also not a fan of recklessness and places her at odds with them but also potentially makes her interesting to James, who is himself quite reckless. Furthermore, Rebecca’s standoffish behaviour and grandstanding alienates engines like Thomas or Percy, while being very similar to how Gordon, Henry and James acted during their younger years, forcing the three to be confronted with how they used to act, reminding them of their old selves (BWBA is so obsessed with flashbacks and dream sequences, so this would be a good opportunity for them to use classic series moments to help flesh out all three and Rebecca here). 

This could build into Henry recognising the traits he used to hide his insecurities before he was rebuilt, helping to shift how the audience sees Rebecca and giving Henry an arc where he helps Rebecca learn to trust other engines and accept friendships - though notably not Gordon and James, who she sees as being the most likely to make fun of her. This helps Henry gain his classic series confidence back, giving him a boost to stand up and tell the Fat Controller that he wants to move, as well as the confidence to push back against Gordon when the big engine gets angry about the change. The series then follows Rebecca as she argues with James and Gordon, with engines taking sides depending on the episode - including  Thomas potentially absolutely hating Rebecca due to his alliance and friendship with Gordon.

Finally, Rebecca’s actions and attitude could help spur Diesel into recognising some of these negative traits in himself, finally ending the character arc that was attempted with Springtime for Diesel

Both of these options really focus on taking these established characters and growing them using Rebecca’s characterisation and unique position as the new big engine at Tidmouth, while also building off of Rebecca’s character strengths to make her stand out as unique too. Remember, Rebecca is the same size and strength as Gordon - the series hasn’t seen a NWR engine of comparable size to Gordon since Hiro was introduced, and he was neither an express engine nor a candidate for the Steam Team, so he was never a credible threat to Gordon. And before Hiro, the last engine of that size was Murdoch right the way back in Series 7, who never made it beyond the model series era. Rebecca has a real potential to be this threat to Gordon, being the first engine of such size introduced in almost a decade - she can pull express trains as well as Gordon while showing up James and being mixed-traffic and versatile like Henry. This is what irks me - Rebecca had everything going for her before she debuted, and got none of it. 

What is even more painful is the fact that there are an infinite number of ways to further develop and build her character or other characterisations to give her that take inspiration from the source material while still being fresh and interesting - for example, what if Rebecca’s clumsiness came from her being a static exhibit, possibly one at a children’s theme park which would explain the bright colours. She could be so kind and cheerful as a way to handle the pain of watching her siblings be scrapped - something that she could bond with Oliver over. The point is that Rebecca had and still has potential but needs a lot more effort put into her than what she got in canon. 

Part 6: Characters to Pair off with Rebecca: 

This brings me to my final core part to this long, and slightly ridiculous dissertation: who to pair Rebecca up with to best build her character and insert her into this universe while feeling natural and potentially giving them some more screen time and character dynamics outside of their usual social circles. 

For this, I decided not to look at Gordon, Henry or James, seeing as they got a lot of consideration in the previous parts, where they were core components of building up Rebecca’s character while also naturally removing Henry from the Steam Team. The following ten characters are engines who I feel would be some of the most interesting to pair up with Rebecca earlier on in the series, to help her bed into the series and give a wide range of popular or interesting characters for viewers to connect her to: 

1: Rosie: Rosie is a USATC s100, a class that worked at Southampton when Rebecca would have been in service! These two potentially have history, and even if they don’t, Rosie would be one of the first engines to realise why Rebecca is acting so standoffish and breaks through to her, seeing as she would have known the class from her younger days. Maybe they become confidants once Rosie manages to break through Rebecca’s facade? Maybe Rebecca decides she prefers Vicarstown and we go back to the Classic-era ensemble cast? The opportunities here are great, and it has the potential to give Rosie some real backstory too! 

2: Salty: Salty also worked at Southampton when Rebecca would have been in service, his class having been introduced in 1962, giving up to five years’ worth of potential overlap. Though it’s less likely the pair would have crossed paths, Salty would still know a lot about the West Country Class. He could potentially even float the idea of her getting rebuilt like a number of her siblings, which would add some real-life facts to the series! It would also be interesting to see Rebecca avoid Salty because she doesn’t want to be exposed by him - remember, she was in service at the end of BR, and really wouldn’t trust diesels based on what they did. 

3: Thomas: Thomas’ class also worked at Southampton when Rebecca would have been in service! However, Thomas would not have personally been at Southampton which means the connection is a little looser. Instead, he could have heard about them from a sibling, or maybe Stepney? Imagine Thomas being really excited to meet this new engine who he’s heard all these positive things about and then it’s this standoffish, grumpy engine who Gordon says is dangerous at speed. It would make for such an interesting dynamic and we could see the cheeky and blunt Thomas from the early series again! 

4: Oliver: These two both made it through the darkest days of BR and survived, and both are also very proud of their achievements - these being Rebecca’s speed and Oliver’s bravery - which could make a scenario where the two hype each other up, much to their own detriment. It would also be interesting to see how Toad would fit into this, seeing as Rebecca is quite reckless and Toad would be opposed to such a thing - and could create a really interesting dynamic where Oliver is forced to pick which of the two he believes during an episode. I can see Oliver being someone Rebecca trusts due to their shared experiences, and it gives Oliver some spotlight. 

5: Emily: Emily was what Rebecca is - an express engine with wheelslip issues who is considered to be one of the best engines of their time. Emily is also an engine who has some issues with CGI-era characterisation and could really do with being revitalised, so why not work with it? Emily tries to be nice and kind with Rebecca, only to keep hitting brick walls and reverting to her old, bossy ways to try and force the new engine to do what Emily wants - bonus points if this is held as being the right thing to do in that situation! It could also play into her getting her number, maybe by rescuing Rebecca from an accident she got into? 

6: Sir Handel: Sir Handel is another engine who desperately needs their characterisation revitalised, and Rebecca is a great chance! Sir Handel considers himself an express engine, and meeting Rebecca puffs him up as she regales him with tales of her speed. This plays into Sir Handel’s cockiness and he gets himself into trouble - and then he decides to get payback in whatever way possible, and we see the reverse of the situation where Sir Handel’s stories get Rebecca all fired up and she gets her own comeuppance. This would not only reintroduce Sir Handel, but also could set the foundations for Duke to return, with references to the MSR. 

7: RWS Flying Scotsman: I specify RWS Scott because I want the kinder, more humble version we got in the RWS to the version we got in the CGI era. Seriously - this engine has just been saved from scrap and given a second chance and his first action is to antagonise his only living sibling? I want him trying to be a voice of reason to Rebecca, seeing as he is uniquely placed to know the consequences of wheelslip - something he also has; as well as recklessness - Scott was the first to officially hit 100mph, so he knows a thing or two! Even more, Rebecca might look up to Scott, based on his fame, though his stories may lead to her being more reckless! 

8: BoCo: Remember I mentioned that the West Country Class caught on fire? Imagine a story with that, with BoCo (a Class 28 infamous for catching fire) as Rebecca’s foil. It could begin with BoCo backfiring and Rebecca making fun of him for it due to her disdain for the diesels who replaced her class before she suffers a similar fate when her boiler lagging catches fire and it’s BoCo who has to help her get her train home. It would be a great way for Rebecca to learn that diesels aren’t all bad, as well as giving her someone new to be friends with - and it would reintroduce BoCo! This could also help draw Rebecca down the branch to meet Bill and Ben… 

9: Molly: Overtly shy Molly and secretly shy Rebecca who covers her shyness up with aggression would make for such an interesting dynamic! I can imagine Molly gathering up all of her courage to speak to Rebecca only to be shot down (unintentionally) and then never want to talk to Rebecca again, and it’s only when Rebecca realises that the bigger engine tries to hunt Molly down - possibly with hilarious consequences. This idea would really work well if you popped in Mavis, who would want to help Molly and stand up to Rebecca. It would also be interesting to reintroduce Molly, especially with Mattel wanting more gender equality. 

10: Mike: This would be a case of grumpy, standoffish Mike versus standoffish-to-hide-insecurities Rebecca! These two would be about as productive as a house on fire. Literally! These two would naturally bump heads in the worst way possible, and it would create incredible comedy and infinite story potential. This would be even better if you added some inferiority complex on Mike’s side, based on the fact he’s never seen an engine this big before - seeing as Rebecca is the only engine of this size able to visit Arlesburgh. They would rile each other right the way up the wall and it would probably never get any better. 

To conclude, Rebecca had real potential as a character - she had an iconic basis, good timing for her introduction and the role she was aiming to fill in many ways needed to be filled; Henry’s character assassination had made him hard to watch for a long time, and moving him out of the spotlight to give writers some time to rehabilitate him was long overdue. It’s just a real massive shame that they managed to fail so badly. By failing to properly plan and develop Rebecca, Mattel created a background character that they tried to have fill a major role that she simply was not able to fill. There were many better choices in the show to take Rebecca’s role, not least of all Molly - a yellow tender engine who was shy and a bit clumsy. By neglecting to properly integrate Rebecca into the series and then giving the show writers very little personality to work with, Mattel ensured that Rebecca would be a BWBA-exclusive character, an engine who never managed to gain half of the popularity of other characters who had comparable runtimes. Engines like Murdoch, Molly and BoCo have far better legacies than Rebecca, and it comes down to how they were treated by the series. All three were introduced with something that made them unique, be it through their interactions with other characters or through their own unique characterisation. Rebecca is a grim reminder to people developing characters for stories - especially characters being added later in the series to a cast of strong, notable and even iconic characters - that these late introductions need a lot of effort and carefully designed arcs to make them viable and allow them to become embedded into the series alongside those they share the screen with. 

Rebecca is one of those characters who is enough of a blank slate that it is easy for people to project onto her. In some cases, this is useful to a character’s legacy - Fergus, Molly, and even Smudger all have been remembered far more fondly by the fanbase than their limited appearances ought to warrant, however this is mostly because they were given a strong enough personality by the show that these projections had preexisting characterisations to connect to. Rebecca was given far too little, and in redesigning her character, I feel like I’ve gained a new understanding of just how far Mattel had pushed the show prior to its cancellation. By expanding the series to include new characters from around the world while also demanding episodes with new, untested characters back on Sodor, the writing team was rushed to complete episodes with a plethora of new faces that had no substance to back them up. There was no chance for these foreign engines to become anything meaningful while Mattel demanded enough new characters to fill an entirely different series, nor was there time for many of the characters back on Sodor to develop meaningfully while the writers scrambled to try and create far too many new characters from scratch. 

And it was the characterisations that suffered for it. 

Once again, this was not an attempt to convince people to like or dislike the version of Rebecca found in BWBA, but instead look into why Rebecca as a character failed to stand up against the other Steam Team members or even many of the more notable secondary faces found in the TVS at this point in the series. This can be boiled down to comparisons to her predecessor, a lack of effort from Mattel to give Rebecca a chance to develop and the decision to use cliched characteristics to create a version of Rebecca that never was going to capture many viewers’ imaginations. This was also an attempt to redevelop Rebecca into someone that can be used by the fandom to rehabilitate her image, or at the least to point out what went wrong and what could have been done to fix it. Maybe someday Rebecca will get the redevelopment she deserved, or perhaps she will be left to the annals of Thomas history, becoming just another footnote in the ever-expanding list of characters who couldn’t stand the test of time.

Traintober 2023: Day 18 - Blueprints

Crovan's Gate Works is Home to many Blueprints:

Crovan’s Gate Works is one of, if not the, largest steamworks in the United Kingdom – and the single best equipped. It services steam locomotives from all four of Sodor’s railways, as well as engines from across the country and further. Many of the engines who appeared in the infamous ‘The Great Race’ movie – especially those from Europe – were actually engines being overhauled at Crovan’s Gate when Mattel sent people to do research for the film. The works has machines that can make any part needed for an engine on the Fat Controller’s railway, and beyond – but that’s not all they have.

In a dark, slightly dusty room underneath the main offices, there are filing cabinets. Row upon row of the things which stretch out through the basement. And in these filing cabinets are the blueprints. There are thousands of these blueprints carefully sorted and filed away in this room. Everything from the designs of the A1X Terrier through to the Streamlined Coronation class. It’s all in this one room.

And it was originally the folly of Sir Topham Hatt I, back in 1897.

When he was the CME of the Tidmouth, Knapford & Elsbridge Light Railway (TK&ELR), Topham Hatt began collecting old blueprints. Some people collect stamps, others collect coins – but Topham collected blueprints. He had already copied many of the Great Western’s blueprints during his time as an apprentice at Swindon Works, and these he kept with new plans sent to him by his friend William Stanier in his office.

When building the TK&ELR Coffee Pot engines, he consulted a huge number of blueprints, trying to find something he could build considering the extremely low amount of resources he was allocated. And he did utilise some ideas from the various blueprints he had acquired – specifically a redrawing of the ‘blueprints’ used for the Novelty from the Rainhill trials… only the blueprints Hatt had were extremely well-drawn fakes, which did a bit of messing with the exhaust system. Topham Hatt mixed these blueprints with several others, but the exhaust system became infamous for spewing out dirty brown water.

This led to Topham Hatt deciding that the best way to avoid such an embarrassment in the future was to get more blueprints. He managed to bargain the blueprints of almost every engine he ever bought into the deal, with one notable exception: Henry.

Henry was built using stolen blueprints which were muddled and half-right. Hatt never managed to nab the stolen blueprints for himself, which made diagnosing Henry all the more difficult. It was actually Richard Hatt – Topham’s great grandson – who found the formerly stolen blueprints. He managed to find them in a garage sale!

Percy was another engine whose blueprints did not fully arrive with the engine. The warehouse Hatt bought him from had a grand total of around 59% of his original blueprints, with the other 41% being scattered across the West Country, the Midlands and Wales. If you can believe it, Topham Hatt went on the hunt for these blueprints all throughout the 1930s, and was able to snag the last one from the wreck of a bombed house in Cardiff in 1941.

When British Railways was formed in 1948, the now Sir Topham Hatt utilised his new position on the board of the company to gain access to every blueprint British Railways had under its control. Carriages, trucks, engines – even railway adjacent lorries, ships and buses all had blueprints that Sir Topham was able to have copied and sent to Crovan’s Gate. These were all placed in a special room and have been updated since.

Sir Charles Topham Hatt also added to this collection – but for a very different reason. In the 1960s, as Sodor gained more independence – and more diesels – it became increasingly clear that the island had to repair its engines on its own. To this end, Sir Charles began having copies of engines he bought sent to Sodor so that in the event of repairs, the works at Crovan’s Gate would be able to use the original blueprints before beginning the overhaul, saving time and allowing the workers to know what parts the engine might need. Sir Charles also had updated blueprints of all of his engines drafted, as many of his older engines had been heavily modified since arriving (such as Edward, Henry and Gordon), meaning that new, accurate blueprints were required. The first of these would be Edward’s when he went in for an overhaul after his ‘Exploit’ in 1965.

Today, there are thousands of blueprints kept at Crovan’s Gate Works, with new ones added each year. These are often copies of blueprints for locomotives built outside of the UK, as it is believed that Crovan’s Gate Works has a copy of the designs for every British locomotive, carriage, and wagon to have ever run – bar those which never had blueprints.

A Quick Aside from Traintober 2023 Day 8

So, I put up a Traintober 2023 piece about Cranky, Henry and their nature blog (read here), and there are two points I want to talk about but didn't really want to stuff into what was already surprisingly long:

1. Henry's Forest has some exceptionally stunning visuals. Can we all take a moment to appreciate what has to be one of the true peaks of the classic series' model making? I still hold it in my heart that Season 4 is the true peak of the beauty of the model era, but Season 3 and Season 5 both include some absolutely gorgeous sets - I mean just look at these shots from Henry's Forest!

2. The cassowary is terrifying, a modern-day dinosaur and definitely real. These things are built like tanks, with helmets for skulls, razor sharp talons and a top speed of 50kph (or 31mph). They will attack and are not to be taken light-heartedly. That being said, they look super cool, the second heaviest bird in the world after the ostrich and can leap 2 metres (7 feet) into the air. They are basically the closest thing the modern day has to a dinosaur, if I'm honest. Look at it!

Traintober 2023: Day 8 - Bird

Cranky Blames Henry:

Okay, so there is already an amazing post about how Henry becomes an activist for animal conservation in the modern era (and that is a headcanon I love), but what about Cranky? In the series, he’s explicitly said that he has befriended the seagulls at Brendam Docks. So – what if he ended up becoming a social media activist too? Of course, he would never willingly start a social media account to talk about the birds, and he certainly can’t access a phone that easily. So how did Cranky end up being one of the most outspoken ornithologists on the internet?

He blames Henry.

See, Henry began his online presence with a blog about the nature spots of Sodor in the 90’s. I’m talking about a really old blog, with maybe a grainy video or two – but definitely a lot of pictures. At this point, Henry had a driver who was really into amateur photography, and the green engine was able to rope him into taking pictures all over Sodor. He made posts about the forest, about the hills near his infamous tunnel, about the Western coast (Duck is still confused as to why Henry came all the way to Haultraugh to stare at Dilly’s great-grand ducklings), and even about Skarloey Lake with the help of Peter Sam. And it was a very popular blog – Henry switched it up when he began to run out of nature spots by the railway and started a Tidmouth sheds community garden so he could talk to his followers about how to care for plants (Bear’s second man started a corner for cooking, using the plants grown in the garden). Fast forward a two decades, and for his twentieth anniversary online, Henry decided to visit a few local spots once more to talk about Sudrian nature and wildlife – and one of those spots was Brendam Docks. By this point, videos were a bit more reliable, so he was vlogging these spots, rather than taking pictures.

And while Henry was talking about how important sustainable fishing was for the oceans, including several pointed jabs at a fisherman who used a trawling net, Cranky interrupted. Loudly. A dock worker had almost set a crate down on top of a seagull nest, and the crane went ballistic. Really rips into the poor man, telling him all about how important seagulls are, and speaking at length about why they are a key part of the environment.

Henry leaves the rant in his blog, and overnight Cranky becomes an online sensation. This is just about when Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and other social media platforms are taking off – so it spreads fast. People around the world are talking about Cranky – and for once it’s not because of his part in the TV series!

Cranky isn’t aware of his sudden internet fame until about six weeks later, when a cruise docked at Brendam and several tourists came over and asked to take pictures with the ‘bird rage crane’. There is a lot of health and safety shenanigans, but by the end Cranky is thoroughly unamused with Henry and needs to make more posts reminding people about dockyard safety and why all birds are important.

A rant or five later, and Cranky has his own vlog. The dock manager began it mostly to get Cranky to stop shouting at him – but it quickly became very positive PR for the docks. Brendam Docks isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot, but suddenly people were coming from all over to talk to Cranky about public health and safety – and more notably about wildlife in and around the docks. Cranky talked a lot about maritime creatures (including one notable time when he managed to catch a whale on camera and spent the afternoon gloating to Henry), but mostly about the birds that frequented the harbour and his crane arm.

And yes, that included one vlog where he introduced all his bird friends by name, uncharacteristically softly.

Slowly, Henry and Cranky began to work together more often. It was an odd partnership, certainly – and more than once Bill and Ben hijacked a vlog by pulling pranks (or on one memorable occasion stealing the camera, and on another they somehow loaded Henry into a fishing barge; no one’s quite sure how) – but they worked together surprisingly well. Cranky drew out a lot of Henry’s old snark from his younger days, while Henry drew out a softer side of Cranky. And the two were relentless in their drive to create a wildlife sanctuary on Sodor – in particular, to get Henry’s Forest declared a national park.

The other engines didn’t exactly understand the two’s passion, but certainly did support them. This led to Henry’s Forest being named a national park in 2016 – something that the two celebrated with a special vlog that involved one dock worker suggesting they dismantle Cranky so he could attend.

The two have now become international climate, wildlife and nature activists, which is rather remarkable for a coal-fired steam engine and a 1920’s diesel-powered crane. Even today, they are very vocal in their support of ‘green’ reforms (Cranky got solar panels installed at Brendam Docks, and Henry is championing biofuel alternatives to coal) and have even met Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough! But most importantly, the two still talk about their favourite birds.

Henry’s is the peregrine falcon – he likes it for its speed, plumage and its adaptability – Henry actually once managed to convince a peregrine to perch on his buffer beam and got a photo with it, which he has framed in his berth. Cranky’s is the seagull. He loves the birds, in spite of others teasing him about loving the ‘flying rats of the ocean’, and can recite a number of facts about them. He often has several perched on his crane arm, and has had a seagull build a nest on top of his cab roof.

Despite their personal preferences, both Henry and Cranky continue to wish to one day see an Australian Cassowary, partially because the pair aren’t exactly sure if they’re real or if the Australians made them up to scare foreigners.

What is the 'Engine Rulebook' and where did it come from?:

So, this really early era of railways was a bit insane, and I am not quite well-versed enough to make a case-study out of everything - but like with my Big 4 scrap post, this is more about trends than singular examples - though some do appear.

The 'Engine Rulebook' is basically the set of rules that every engine ever is taught when built. It's a series of important rules, customs and doctrine used by managers to keep engines in line. Yes, I will use a little business-management theory in here, because early management styles have a major effect. And every railway has its own rulebook that may have differences. But there are a few key things in the 'Engine Rulebook' that I see being universal:

1: The company comes first. This is basically the company ensuring loyalty by indoctrinating the engine to see its railway company as the most important aspect of their life. In the Railway Series, Donald and Douglas have very strong ties back to Scotland and the Caledonian railway - which is why they enjoy blue so much. It's the Caledonian Railway colour! And then there's Duck - who literally continues to wear his GWR colours even after joining the NWR. He's deeply connected to the GWR because of this loyalty taught to him.

2: Railway rules. This includes signalling, signage, speed limits, whistles and their uses, headcodes, flags and every other piece of railway rules. They are read the rulebook, and learn everything in it. It's vital! Percy is an industrial engine who is never taught this rulebook - because industries don't have many engines and often pilfer bits from a bigger company's - and thus Percy doesn't know much about the rules of being on a railway when he arrives on Sodor.

3: Etiquette (based on duty). Now, I don't mean bowing or curtseying or the proper fork for fish - I mean the ins and outs of the duty the engine will be expected to complete. Passenger engines learn how to handle coaches and speak politely to passengers, freight engines learn how to handle trucks and look after different cargos, shunting engines learn a new set of rules for the yards - this sort of thing. Gordon struggles with trucks because he was never taught how to handle them.

4: The managers are always right. Touched on this in a reblog of this @mean-scarlet-deceiver ramble, but its basically that the engines are taught that their managers are right in all contexts (unless breaking one of the above rules) and need to be respected and have all directions followed. The manager says to shunt - you go and shunt. They say to go get scrapped - and a good engine listens without hesitation. Doesn't work out in real life all the time - see Oliver, or the Big Engines' strike - but it definitely keeps most engines in line.

So we have these four core rules - but where did they come from? Well...

Regency Era Railways:

Straight off the bat - this is the era where every railway is figuring itself out. The L&MR was where everything was forged in fire - before it, the only railways that existed were isolated plateways in mines and the Stockton & Darlington Railway. None of these were anywhere near as complex as the L&MR, which is really the first railway 'system' in the way we might understand today. It's also where the first sentient engines begin to make a proper appearance and have an effect on people. Before, they were hidden in mines, if they existed at all - but now the public can see them!

Like, imagine this rocks up to collect you in an era when the most advanced method of transport is literally a horse. And it has a face. Remember, in this period people though that if they went over a certain speed or through a tunnel they would explode - so now the thing that might just kill them has a face?!

Managers would very quickly begin implementing ways to soothe their passengers. One way of doing that would be to dehumanise the engines - I can see many early engines being given basically no education because they are both seen as being 'working class' and because they are machines. When Rocket first ran, there were no public schools.

In this era, engines didn't know much, and they were isolated on their little systems. Yard managers are one of the few people with authority that these engines meet on a regular basis, and they use this to their advantage and cultivate this idea that the engines are entirely subservient to them. This is where that manager loyalty begins to become apparent - just not quite in its modern form.

The only education an engine would get is how to be loyal. Why should they learn signals, or passenger etiquette, or how to read? That is a driver or a guard's job. And so this really early era is characterised by dehumanisation and a lot of public-relations officers doing their best to downgrade the sentience of the engines. It's a lot of "yes they have a face, no they don't have intelligence, don't worry". This does extend into the Victorian era, as seen in Very Old Engines, as Skarloey arrives on Sodor with some principles taught at the workshop, only to be met with "you don't have rights, do your job." Which he naturally rebels at and then gets covered in a tarp for his troubles.

Of course, the Regency Era ends very soon into railway history, and just in time for a major game-changer.

The Victorian Era:

1838 is the year the first GWR train runs, and this railway in the South-west of England will have a huge impact on all railways that come after. First, the entire board of directors are very elitist and influential in parliament. This is a railway that needs to live up to its owners.

It is the GWR, not the L&MR, that writes the first book on engine learning. It's also the GWR, and not any other railway in the UK, that first develops a proper corporate culture for its engines that they actually like. The GWR does this by actually treating the engines like they have sentience.

Engines like Iron Duke are introduced to the 'Great Western Way' - this being the rulebook that Brunel and Gooch develop to best serve their wealthy owners. These engines are taught to read, understand the rules of the railway, passenger etiquette - which by now can be taught because there's less fumbling around blindly - and perhaps most importantly: they are taught a very proud mindset. The railway is the most important aspect of their lives, and they are to serve it to the best of their ability. All four of the rules appear in their first form here, except that the etiquette is not entirely based on duty, and instead all engines are taught all jobs - which horrified much of the rest of the railway companies.

But while this is going on on the GWR, the rest of the country's railways were trying to survive a crisis. Railway Mania swept Britain, and hundreds of engines and built (and destroyed) by the week. One thousand bills for new railways were submitted to parliament during this period, and while not all were built - it certainly had an impact. The LNWR was formed during this period, chunks of the Midland Railway, NER, GNR, GCR, Caledonian and basically every other major railway were all constructed in this time frame - but that didn't mean a drastic improvement in how the engines were treated in this area. Many North-western railways were influenced by the thinking from the L&MR, leading to entire fleets of early engines having zero clue how to act or even speak in some cases. When the bubble collapsed, many engines were scrapped - and this is where the other extremely important pillar stone of railway doctrine was introduced: engines are expendable, and should not want to hinder a company. The fourth rule is set into stone here, and goes unchanged and practically unchallenged all the way into the modern era.

This here, the end of steam in Britain, is able to happen because of principles introduced during Railway Mania. British Railways uses this rulebook and the laws that most likely surround it by this point to justify their actions, and also because thanks to this rulebook very few engines have the vague notion or idea to protest. Why would they, it goes against the rules!

The eradication of steam is almost directly caused by the era of Railway Mania and the principles managers introduced in the era to protect their profit margins. Without that doctrine, engines would have had a lot more rights and a lot more ability to protest being scrapped.

In other words, the 1840's was when scrapping began to appear properly, as well as the explosions, derailments and every other crash from the previous generation. Engines became unfeeling in this era - in the north at least. The GWR escaped this by being... well, not an economic bubble.

However, as the British Isles emerges from Railway Mania, two very strong railways vie for influence: the LNWR and the GWR. The LNWR has that traditional L&MR mindset - and it leads to a huge problem. The engines begin to learn how to speak from their crews, and moreover they question why their GWR counterparts are treated so much better. The LNWR also suffers from a number of easily preventable accidents caused by the engine having zero clue what to do.

Some railways land between the two, and it was the GNR that ended up formulating the four rules in their next evolution: engines were only taught their jobs. This was the GNR compromise with their board members. The board wanted a GWR approach, however the actual managers on the ground rebelled, worrying this would lead to the engines working together to demand fairer treatment. The Communist Manifesto was in major circulation at the time, and none of these companies wanted their engines getting any ideas. Instead, they implemented something of a class system, with express engines at the top and shunters at the bottom.

In the TVS, Emily is extremely abrasive towards Thomas (Seasons 8-12), and it may just have to do with the way she was raised, seeing shunters as the lowest form of engine. Gordon certainly did!

These three very distinct practices all melded and fused together on the Midland Railway - which of course ran right in between them all. The Midland Railway wrote the third proper rulebook in 1859, roughly twenty years after the GWR wrote its.

The Midland Railway's rulebook took the LNWR idea that engines needed to be taught to accept death, the GNR idea of a class system and the GWR importance of company loyalty and railway-rule-knowledge and fused them together, being able to create the rulebook that most British railways would use by 1890. The major exception to this was of course the Great Western, which slowly evolved its rulebook to use the LNWR ideas of engines being subservient to their managers while retaining the classless form of etiquette the engines were taught. The GNR would also hold out on some ideas from the GWR until it was amalgamated into the LNER, due to rising fears of Communism by the board.

Many smaller railways, such as the Furness Railway or the Highland Railway in Scotland, would use the GWR style, due to the smaller size of the workforce, and thus the potential necessity for engines to complete duties they were trained for.

Duck fits into his role at Tidmouth with such ease because he knows the theory behind every express train, every freight train, every style of shunting and branchline service. He doesn't need them, but the GWR engines were taught this just in case. Duck is excellent at his job, but he won't take any flak from the other engines because his GWR ideology makes him see them all as equal. This is of course part of the Great Western Way as explained in this post.

In direct contrast, Gordon has zero clue how to pull a freight train, and stalls on the hill because he physically doesn't know what to do.

And this brings me quite neatly to Sir Topham Hatt I. See, this is a GWR man who runs a railway that is very heavily influenced by the Midland Railway rulebook ideology. Edward knows how to do multiple tasks because the Furness Railway used GWR practice (maybe that's why he likes Edward?) while none of the other engines do. Sir Topham Hatt's management style using GWR practice is so confusing to them. Why is James - who is mixed-traffic at best - pulling the express? Why is Gordon pulling freight? Why are the big engines shunting?!

And then we have Henry. Sir Topham and Henry have such a rocky relationship, and it in many ways comes from the fact that Henry had none of the formal education that I just discussed. He's a privately-built engine from stolen plans sold cheap. He doesn't actually know the etiquette of a passenger train - no wonder he stops when he doesn't like the weather! He doesn't physically know better, and so he's acting on his first instincts. This clashes so badly with the GWR style which places etiquette almost above everything else. Hatt reacts so badly and outright insanely to this because to him, Henry is actively and deliberately breaking every rule in the book because of his paint? And Henry doesn't have a clue. Look at how horrified he is!

And don't get me wrong, this is extremely unethical and very stupid, but it has a precedence in miscommunication, differing ideologies and Henry's foolishness.

This was another massive ramble with a lot of insanity, but I do enjoy writing these. Helps organise my mind! As usual, none of the above pictures belong to me, and feel free to chuck in a comment with your opinion!

RWS Shenanigans #2

After the last RWS shenanigans, I thought that I should probably expand on Sodor's SATANIC STONES:

If you look closely, you'll spot a weird, Stonehenge-like group of stones in the background. Those are the Killdane Standing Stones, and the Reverend Wilbert Awdry quite literally insinuated that these are possibly for satanic rituals in the IOS Book.

Now, I'm sorry - but not only is the town named 'Church of the Devil' but this is in allusion to the Standing Stones. Killdane alone is just insane and deserves a very long rant, mostly about what possessed the Reverend to include satanic references into his children's book. There's not even a question to ask but... why?
