I've lost a handful of followers over the past few days and I started thinking a bit about how I use tumblr, the people who follow me, and blogging in general.

Occasionally, I find a blog that interests or fascinates me in some way and I choose to follow it. I don't care if this person follows me back, but it's great when they do. The attention seeker in me likes it that other users can see what I post and that I'm not just shouting into an empty room.

I'm also inclined to follow others back, mostly because if someone came across my blog and took the time out of their day to find mine interesting enough to follow, I will naturally find that person interesting as well. Because of this, I feel used when someone  follows me, sees that I followed back, then clicks unfollow satisfied that their count went up one more and they feel more popular. Whatever.

I do realize that I am quite a bit older than many around here.  I've been doing this blogging thing for years now, First Xanga, then Livejournal, played around with Blogger a bit and deleted it, then landed here. I was reading some of the posts from my old Xanga circa 2004-2005 a bit ago and thinking about how I've changed since then. I was much more chatty about silly things than I am now, I think that's what drew me here. I can make quick one sentence posts, or just put up or reblog an interesting photo without even saying a word. I would like to include more text here in the future. There is always Facebook, but that has become more of a tool for keeping in touch with people than a genuine source of enjoyment.
