The doomed scout-ship Penrose-512 arrives at the equally doomed Ninth House. The Penrose's power plant has just started leaking coolant and needs repairs. The summons to Canaan hasn't arrived at the Ninth House yet.

- Harrowhark Nonagesimus: Wants access to the Penrose navigation computer and claim the worlds of the Eusan Nation as colonies of the Ninth House, doesn't want the other houses to know about the Penrose, senses there is something strange about Ariane, Curious if Elster has a soul
- Elster: Knows how to decrypt the navigation computer but won't give up the information until the ship is fully repaired+resupplied, wants to protect Ariane Yeong, starting to experience persona degradation
