I'm sorry but we need to talk about how knee tremblingly hot it is when Jack memorizes the surgery to repair Rotty's neck after hearing Belle read the case notes to him ONCE.
His stare at Belle's "you can't have gathered all that" I'm feral
And then when they finally do the surgery:
Belle: but how do you remember what to do it's been hours
Jack: a large thrombus developing proximal to their thread and occluding the artery the ligation will prevent the propagation of the clot

After Belle recovers she follows her mother around constantly arguing that now she MUST marry Jack because they've slept together and otherwise her honour would be BESMIRCHED and she would be a LOOSE WOMAN and her mother can't execute him anymore because he saved Belle's life so finally she's like ok fine I see no other option.

thinking about how jack literally had belle's heart in his hands and how she will forever carry his scar near it (and yes i am in fact calling it her jack scar), a permanent reminder that it is because of him that it still beats.
When Jack says to Belle that he will try to save her life because he believes her when she says it can be done, even though he, as a talented surgeon, hasn't been successful using the cadaver--the trust and the amount of respect he has for her opinion, not to mention the bravery required to make that decision without proof, that's what sticks with me. It's so much better than a million whispered "I love yous" could ever be.
Jack's terrified, but he agrees to perform the surgery anyway, hoping against all odds that Belle is correct once again.
And for Belle's part, its not just her trusting Jack's abilites out of blind desperation--if I convince him with my words enough he'll magically have the surgical skill to pull this off--Belle didn't get this way until she saw what Jack could do, what they could accomplish together. It took them both to save her, not Jack alone.

more Artful Dodger/ dodgerfox thoughts because my brain is fixating on pleasant nonsense instead of anything else:
Jack’s surgery on Belle is amazing. We know this already (the history of patients dying, the awe from Hetty and Sneed, the fact that she actually wakes up). What I just realized is how extra incredible it was based on the cadaver Jack and Belle were using to practice. It was a male cadaver with a larger abdomen and rib cage. When they practice Jack can barely fit his hands inside and position them properly. Belle seems to have less trouble doing the same thing because her hands are smaller. When she’s the one on the table it’s that much more difficult for Jack because she’s so petite. So yeah, he’s amazing (and probably a little lucky too). The end.
