Look Back - Dir. Kiyotaka Oshiyama - July 14, 2024
“when i was growing up, and likely when director Oshiyama was as well, being an “otaku” with a passion for manga and anime was not considered normal. perhaps that's why there was a desire to become a normal person. there are scenes related to this in look back. in contrast to tokyo, where diverse groups exist, rural areas typically have only one dominant group, leading to strong peer pressure among people your age. i was often asked why i was still drawing. thoughts like denji's desire to “become a normal person” might stem from the feeling of being in a group but not being part of it.” — fujimoto tatsuki

something has gone deeply wrong when "focusing pragmatically on issues you can influence and working to make life better for yourself and your community" is considered an unserious distraction while "endlessly exposing yourself to media about distressing situations you can't control" is considered political engagement

March 8, 2024 - A Palestine Action activist destroys a painting of Lord Balfour at Trinity College in Cambridge, UK. Lord Balfour, as the UK foreign secretary signed the Balfour Declaration on November 2nd 1917, which was a public statement issued by the British government which promoted "the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people". The British obviously had no right to give the land away to anyone. [video]
