i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors

“red and green are opposites 🥰” cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a child’s finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit

ok i can’t explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like

with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, don’t distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing

is it too much to ask

gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that

This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones

"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!

This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!

Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process

With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)

thanks this is super helpful! /gen

I want to tell a story to the artists and would-be artists out there.

When I was 19, I made a large oil painting of the nerd I would eventually marry. I poured all my attention and care into this painting. It's the only art I have from back then that still holds up as a work I'm proud of today.

I entered it into a judged show at the local art center. It got an honorable mention. I went to see the show with my beloved model. One of the judges came up to talk to me, and highlighted that all the judges really liked the painting. It would have placed, except, you see, the feet were incorrect. They were too wide and short, and if I just studied a bit more anatomy-

I called over my future wife, and asked her to take off her shoe. Being already very used to humoring me, she did. The judge looked at her very short, very wide little foot. Exactly as I'd lovingly rendered it. I would never edit her appearance in any way.

The judge looked me in the eye, and to his credit, he really looked like he meant it when he said "Oh I'm so sorry."

Anyways the moral of the story is that all of those anatomy books that teach you proportions are either showing you averages, or a very specific idea of an idealized body. Actual bodies are much more varied than that.

So don't forget to draw from observation, and remember that humans aren't mass produced mannequins. Delight in our variation. Because it's supposed to be there.

This is a hilarious mistranslation actually. I suspect it originally said something along the lines of "Impregnerad mot vatten", i.e. "Water proof".

Impregnering is the process of making a material resistant to water/heat. The swedish word for water (vatten) is similar to the word for goblin (vätten) so I guess there was a mixup.

GRADE SCHOOL SJWS stop using social justice language to explain shit to your conservative parents IT’S NOT GONNA GO THROUGH now all they have are some new words to make fun of. don’t tell your mom she’s being fatphobic tell her she’s being a dick

No, this is for real.

"I don't think you raised me to treat/talk about/ talk to people like that" is an extremely powerful sentence. So is "it makes me sad when you say mean things like that." There's also "I wouldn't like it if someone said rude things like that about you/my sibling/[other parent]/loved family figure."

My parents don't get that a lot of the comments they make about people are fatphobic, perisexist, transphobic, etc. (I'd say that my dad doesn't know that the things he says are homophobic, but he does.) But they do understand that they told me to treat people respectfully all my life, and they hate being shown up as acting hypocritical.

(And for real I hate little more in this world than @mistresskabooms telling me I'm not acting the way I raised her to act.)

For real though, this also (surprisingly?) applies to telling your white racist relatives they're being racist when you're white yourself. Like a word as simple and old as that, you'd think it wasn't on anyone's I don't Get It -list anymore. And yet.

The thing with a lot of people who casually throw around these old school "jokes" about minorities is that they do know those big words like racist and transphobic and fatphobic. They "know" those words mean that it's a bad thing. But they don't understand how and why that is it because the mechanics are strange to them and don't fit into what they've been taught. And if they're really conservative, they know those words mean you're talking Leftist ideologies, which is just about as bad as being the Bad Word. Which results in an immediate shutdown. You're talking extremist gobbledygook. You can't be taken seriously. You've been radicalized.

When you start trying to talk someone out of being an asshole to others, you gotta do it in baby steps. Do the 101. Use small words. Appeal to their sense of needing to be considered a good person instead of immediately using academic jargon, no matter how succinct and tempting it might be. We're here to make people care, make them consider hurting others less first, before you can spring on the "oh yeah this all is called X-phobia, academically speaking" on them.

Deescalation and communication without blame is SO useful!!!!

  • Keep calm and cool
  • Don't use accusatory language
  • Use words they're likely to understand
  • Speak at a normal volume at an even tone
  • Be respectful
  • If the conversation gets out of hand, disengage

This is FANTASTIC for communicating important ideas with others, but is also super useful for diffusing fights, avoiding fights, and communicating feelings!

10/10 DO RECOMMEND

appalachia is devastated. towns i loved, towns i visited all the time, are gone. not damaged, GONE. they are leveled to the ground. there is nothing left but rubble and ruin. people are dead. appalachia is poor to begin with and relies on tourism for a lot of its income, and multiple of those tourist locations are just...gone.

my town is okay, but it's flooded and wrecked. trees are blocking all but one way out of our neighborhood. power lines are hanging limp in the roads. we've been without power for over 24 hours and will continue to be without power for likely another 24+. disabled people and poor people are GOING to die from this. gods save appalachia.

it's always a hit or miss with appalachian charities. a lot are just evangelism with no action behind what they do. i suggest looking into them before donating.

adding some additional photos from the other side of the mountains here in northeast tennessee. there has been genuinely catastrophic flooding in many areas and billions of dollars of damage across NETN and WNC. we are not built to withstand this. 33 people are currently missing in unicoi county alone

my mom just had a 7cm brain tumor removed and since she's woken up she's been talking nonstop about this dream she had about going to an art gallery full of colourful paintings by a 'homosexual artist' named klimsdorf who was ethereal and wise, both young and old... at first she was convinced he was a real person but after failing to find him online she's accepted he was a figment of her subconscious mind and is now determined to bring him to life via painting his portrait herself. she's 67 and has never drawn in her life. and now this. blorbo from her tumor
