Through the halls of the castle, Prince Maniks voice could be heard reciting the oath of dutiful sovereignty to the people of the kingdom. The sword of Acorn shone brightly in the daylight streaming through stained glass as the Queen performed the accolade for her son, and when that was done, the King presented a fine gold circlet to his boy. The cacophony was tremendous as everyone cheered. But now, the daylight had made way for the evening. Candles flickered in every corner, casting a strange shadows and throwing light in shifting patterns. It caught the gold of the wall sconces, the dripping, pooling crystals of the chandeliers. Even the floor with its fresh polish seemed to glow. Dresses with their long skirts swept through the ballroom and along the passage ways creating a constantly rustling undertone to the small orchestra, whose music echoed through the stone halls, permeating the castle. Shadow could hear it even now as he walked through the far edges of the castle gardens.
