I think this is tricky. First of all, I think mega-churches and McChurches have absolutely no value or worth in our society. They make me sick. They exploit people’s fears and faith for profit. Joel Olsteen makes me want to shoot most things. There are no redeeming qualities to mega-churches so I think if they’re at least still going to exist they should pay taxes like any other big business.

I think where people can experience the true presence of God are home churches and small community churches. These are the ones that are barely scraping by on member donations and volunteer work. Real community is found in places like this and I don’t think it’s fair to propose a tax on them if they can barely afford the building they meet in on Sundays.

That being said, what is fair in this case? You can’t have a law that effects one church and not the other. And what about the separation of church and state? Would taxation on churches (mega or otherwise) create too much hands-on government in the realm of religion? We would certainly also then have to tax mosques, synagogues, and other places of worship. 

I guess it’s tough. As is everything politics.
