At the Ryoanji Abbott's Quarters, Kyoto.
Kano School Period: Momoyama (17th Century) Material: Ink and color on gilded paper The Ryoanji Abbot's Quarters, was built by a military commander, Nobukane Oda in 1606. These panels, made by painters from the Kano school, were originally placed inside of this building. During the Meiji period, the period of historical chaos, most of these sliding doors had flown out of Ryonaji temple. Today, we display these six panels as to celebrate their return to the temple after 123 years.
The title, 'Banana Plants' refers to the paintings that depict a hedged garden with banana plants. At the beginning of the 17th century banana plants were rare and unusual in Japan, hence precious and highly regarded.
