The Elephant Foot Tree's Foot
Montreal Botanical Garden, Montreal, QC.
This species owes its name to its swollen trunk, which stores water. Even young plants have a bulbous, swollen base. This specimen is one of the oldest plants at the Montréal Botanical Garden. It arrived from Paris as a seed in 1938. The labels for all the plants in our collections indicate the year in which they were acquired. Elephant foot trees have long been prized ornamental plants, popular for their showy stems and tufts of long, curved leaves. Mature plants produce large upright clusters of thousands of tiny creamy white flowers.

Cave 11 is usually overlooked after the splendor of Cave 10, and because it looks just like any of your modern day brutalist dormitories. It is called Do Taal (two floors) because the ground floor had been buried and was only excavated in 1876.
