Randomly Pixellated

@vlkphoto / vlkphoto.tumblr.com

Like most people, I have taken thousands of pics over the years. And just like most people even I have barely looked at them myself. This is an effort to pare them down to a small subset of interesting ones. So I will put up one a day until I run out of pics, or patience, or Tumblr. ©CC-BY-SA

The Elephant Foot Tree's Foot

Montreal Botanical Garden, Montreal, QC.

This species owes its name to its swollen trunk, which stores water. Even young plants have a bulbous, swollen base. This specimen is one of the oldest plants at the Montréal Botanical Garden. It arrived from Paris as a seed in 1938. The labels for all the plants in our collections indicate the year in which they were acquired. Elephant foot trees have long been prized ornamental plants, popular for their showy stems and tufts of long, curved leaves. Mature plants produce large upright clusters of thousands of tiny creamy white flowers.

Shake the tail

A little sculpture at the Portland Japanese Garden, looking like the tail of a bird. Portland, OR.

Deep depth .. [2 / 2]

Belle Isle Marsh Reservation just prior to the end of annual winter hibernation. Winthrop, Boston, MA.

The depth in this field is huge. Everything from the fence on the viewing deck to the faraway clouds are seemingly in focus. To perceive the depth, cross eyes and superpose left image viewed with right eye over right image viewed with left eye.

Ellora Cave 11 Do Taal – Interior in depth .. (7 / 7) [2 / 4]

Interior structures. Ellora, MH.

Cave 11 is usually overlooked after the splendor of Cave 10, and because it looks just like any of your modern day brutalist dormitories. It is called Do Taal (two floors) because the ground floor had been buried and was only excavated in 1876.

To perceive depth, cross eyes and superpose left image viewed with right eye over right image viewed with left eye. The brain will do the rest.

Twinkle twinkle little fish

Tiny fish in the shallows stayed stationary long enough for the waves to distort the surface and induce perspective shifts. Isla Isabela, Galapagos.

The camera didn’t change position appreciably, but the distortion of the surface causes large scale twinkling and gives us 3D information. Cross eyes and superpose the left image viewed with right eye over right image viewed with left eye, and you can see it pop out over the undulations of the rocky beach.

Badland and grassland

Badlands National Park, Interior, SD.
